Professorturnups Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Long time ago not sure if I heard these on my first visit to The Casino,But they just come to mind really vividly, Were they massive tunes or just ones that I liked ?? Frankie Beverly --- If That's What You Wanted Garnet Mimms --- Looking For You Dena Barnes --- If You Ever Walk Out Of My Life (also really liked "These Heartaches") The Salvadors --- Stick By Me Baby The one sound that get's me thinking about it now is The Superlatives --- "I Still Love You", Far too fast to dance to nowadays(Except in the kitchen),But back in the day !! Grant Superlatives played 3+ times at last Blackpool - danced to it once only though! Mark C
Guest Swish Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 At the Twisted Wheel, well I guess all the records blew my mind, but, and I mention this because through all the years I don't remember it ever being a massive sound again, well ERROL DIXON -I WANT just unbelievable. I've been told I used to write my name in small letters on the labels of records i bought. (WHAT A DING!, but then again perhaps I wasn't because then I had no intention of ever selling them as long as I lived I was more worried about having them stolen). Any way somewhere out there is a copy of this record on UK RAINBOW with my name written on it. i f any of you have never heard it I suggest you drop whatever is available, put your headphones on, turn it up full blast, and stare at a photo of the Twisted Wheel. You won't be disappointed.
Guest Swish Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Nearly! IT WAS 1971---Boxing Night at Up The Junction. Whether it was played or not Ive been in northern soul orbit ever since. Oh! and another..........Im Standing........That was a relatively late Stateside discovery, I seem to recall Richard, I knew it was Up the Junction instantly, (mind you it helps that I know you rather well). As far as I know I'M STANDING was first played at the Junction. I paid John Hill £25 for it on Stateside demo at that very venue. (I had to pester him, nearly non-stop all night long, )
Guest DeeJay Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 I'll go for...Goodbye Nothing To Say-Nosmo King And The Javells.......Cochise-Paul Humphrey......The Zoo-The Comodores AND FOR YOU,PREY TELL difficult to say on my very first visit (remember everyones a divvy at the beginning )But! our first real do was a dayer at the Ritz, Manchesta, i remember Johnny bragg, Fantasic Plastic Factory, and errrr maybe Sue Lynn As for my first wigan venutures, biggies at the time were- Lou Roberts 10 to 1,Carmel Strings, and maybe Tamala lewis although i fancy that came a bit later. Your right a very underated Wheel classic for years it was always introduced as I NEED SOMEONE TO LOVE because the label was on the wrong side and no one cottened on including myself. The fab re release had it the right way. The Hoop was another great track by him. Rufus Lumley wasn't that big at the Wheel but it got played a few times. Regards Brian

Regards Brian No one ever introduced it at the Wheel because the D'Js never talked. The labels are still the wrong way round on the Fab release. Rufus Lumley was not discovered until Crewe Up the Junction. I can't swear on my life to any of this but I'll bet you £100 I am right. I never knew THE HOOP. I just had a listen, yeah, quite a nice tune. Which of these 2 Errol Dixon numbers would you say is the better?

I had both the Rainbow and Fab and I think the Fab release is the right way round (can anyone confirm)I know the Rainbow release is as I've got it now. Rufus Lumley was played occasionally around 68 but was never that big. Lots of tracks got credited as new discoveriesat post wheel venues that were played at the Wheel mainly because they become bigger later. I always liked I WANT even though I thought it was I NEED SOMEONE TO LOVE ME

Swish Not entirely sure which ED tunes of which you speak but I'm a 'sucker' for Give Me More Time which I had once upon a time - UK Oriole seems to come to mind. A ska tune for sure but very much on the 'cusp' of Soul & very easy to dance Northern style to. Mick

Willow Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 l suspect the mid-70's there,my friend! Spot on 73/74 at the Casino, there were many others a lot of which had already been mentioned. Good thread, Cheers Yogi

The 2 tunes previously mentioned, well one is R&B (THE HOOP). The other is powerful Northern soul. It was on you you tube once but I just looked and it has gone Cheers Swish
Souljer6 Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Hi Swish ( also Bri Phillips) Now I can completely concur with you Swish that Rufus Lumley was discovered at the time of Up the Junction--or maybe just before but certainly after the demise of The Wheel. I recall vividly sitting in the Clarkes Arms in Hyde discussing records with my old mentor Dave Slater. He told me about it and I remember telling him about what I thought was my latest discovery---I'll Try-- Sam&Bill. He knew it, however (yawn). We thought we knew it all, didnt we? But I've recently had some fascinating discussions with Brian and have been gobsmacked at his depth of knowledge and what actually was played at The Wheel and contemporary venues. And how sounds got played, then were forgotten and then were "discovered" anew by the a newer generation. In those days I guess that the average Wheeler was only around for 2 or 3 years before getting married and settling down to family life. Not like us "Northern Soulers" eh? Another thing. I doubt anyone will take this seriously but Dave Slater insists that Frank Wilson was played at The New Elizabethan, Belle Vue circa 1970. How can that be right? But I can assure you Dave knows his onions and he aint no bullshitter. Erroll Dixon on Rainbow-------Had this ever since my early prenighter days. Great record but labels definitely reversed. Everyone referred to it as I need someone to love and I always thought that that aint right. Circa 1972 I found a copy of "I dont want"on Direct on Shudehill stalls. Bought it on the strength of "I want". The other side is "The Hoop" which I dont rate at all. "I dont want", however is a great record, the official "A" side and the side which should have got the plays imo. More R&B than "I want", though. Confused?? Wish I could write effortlessly like you, my old pal. RICH

Guest Little Anthony Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 First walked into the Casino as a 15 year old on 4th March 1978 (Saturday after an oldies night..people warned me that numbers might be down...It was about 2/3 full). On a trip organised by Denise Spittle from Willenhall Baths. Memory is a little blurred, but I particularly remember Winstanley's spot as he was on went I went in.....Lorraine Silver, Holly St James, James Coit, Teddy Vann, Phil Coulter, Billy Arnell, Bobby Paris, Levi Jackson/Solomon King etc. Undoubtedly the biggest record at the time was the Del Capris/Construction, which was obviously Searling's no. 1 play. Evison rounded the night off and remember him playing Len Barry's verion of 'I'll always need you' and Dee Dee Warwick 'Monday Monday'...as a 15 year old with limited exposure to the big tunes, it was fair to say that I spent 3.00pm 'till 7.00pm on familiar ground in Mr M's....biggest sound in there was Tony Newman's 'let the good times roll'...loved by the top dancers !

Stevesilktulip Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 First all-nighter was somewhere in Aycliffe in 1976 - I was 14 and I hated it. First time I ever heard the Flasher and the only other record I remember was I love Music. First all-dayer was in Durham the previous year and I loved it. So is the Son, Better use your Head and Pick me up ... in your pocket stick in my mind but most of what I hear at Northern nights still, I first heard that day.

Guest theoriginator56 Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I do remember that Mike Vickers was played by Guy at Stafford as The Boogaloo Investigator but didn't know that it had been around that long. Mind you, there were records played throughout the years which perhaps didn't take off initially but did following re-activation some years later - maybe On The Brink was one those - almost perfect for the rise of 'new' 60's at Stafford even though it 'aint Soul.... Mick first heard thiis at WC. 79 80 coverd as derek and ray pharohs wallk .i did have it on a emidisk tohther side was i can see him again the twan so it could have been eerlier
nrc Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Remember my first time at the Torch - Sam and Kitty -Ive got something good . ( every body on the floor for this one) Eddie Parker -Love you Baby. The Tymes- What would i do. Also remember Soul Sam playing Otis Smith- Let her Go , for the first time only about five people bothered to dance to it until it had a few more plays.
Mal C Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Think my first all nighter would have been a Twisted Wheel revival nighter with that Tony Clayton bloke, he was the priest right? would have been 87 I guess, quickky followed by the 100 club where I fell asleep with my head in one of the noughts !! Sounds that I remember, Precisions, Chubby Checker, Bobby Hebb, Ersque Reeder, Jerry Fuller..most of the music I knew was from Kent Lp's and from scooter runs; would have been attending the Old Vic in Wolverhampton every month also, so Lady in Green from Ted Massey, and Verdelle Smith and Kelly Garret are stand outs played by Tony Renoylds there and at the Out Rigger in Brum.. Reminds me of the Big SKOL Sign on the Birmingham sky line, by the Rotunda... !! happy memories.. Mal.C.
