There's one in Wolverhampton, Oldies Unlimited, but the problem is that the staff know little about what they are selling and rely on the Record Collector price guide, so everything is book price and they don't take into consideration the condition. So therefore, to someone like me, it's a waste of time looking in there. It was good when Swoz was running it but that was only good for soul stuff, they still didn't know much about the non soul things.

The last really great record shop I looked in was in Bognor regis, can't remember the name, was about 5 minutes from the seafront, I got soul stuff plus a very rare French 10" album by Serge gainsbourgh, couple of psych things, happy days. Sadly that was way back in the 90's.

Most Oxfam records shops are like that also Pete, we have a couple up here and condition is at times laughable yet they charge book price, I was after a couple of albums they had in one store and you would think someone had practiced ice skating on them, I pointed this out to the manager and he just shrugged his shoulders, that was a couple of years ago and they are still there, stupid really

One down the steps was called "spin inn" a small shop,another one off deansgate was the old HMV shop with the old booths for listening to tracks {mid 70s] also down stairs.

Ahh happy days. I used to go to Spin Inn on Cross St then to Rare Records on John Dalton St in Manchester. Then try any old second hand stores on the way home.Few and far betwween now.

The absolute classic has to be Rob Smith's joint , this place is a mad mans nightmare , there are pyramids of bagged up records and Rob knows exactly where everything is , there's every kind of music and every kind of format you can think of.He should charge an entrance fee it's well worth a look.One of my favorite stores was Boogaloo records and I had some great finds in there it was slap bang in the middle of leicester and was run by paul Rudizies (spelling ?).I had a great day one fri afternoon I got Four voices Love is getting stronger (£20.00),bluejays Point of view (£10.00) jesse Davis Hang on in there girl(£20.00)General assembly Sensative mind(£15) and anabel Fox (£10.00) plus a load more cheapos ect.He always had new stock and i used to go most weeks.Staying in leicester there used to be a shop in silver street called the very bazaar upstairs it was dope pipes skins and bongs down stairs second hand records and bootlegs I found Lynn Randel stranger in my arms British Demo (10p) Ray pollard drifter (10p) the tears sweet love (10p)plus loads of Tamla sue Atlantic stax records and over a period of time the bulk of my reggae collection all the pama , trojan, crab and cancer lables ect, all at 10 - 20 pence.it still is a head shop and I pop in from time to time for some skins or gauses for my bong.I often wonder what happend to the scot's guy that ran it one day there was a pile of white lable stuff that He gave me He said He didn't know what they were and thought that if they were laying about some one could think they were bootlegs .When I got home the first one I played turned out to be Prince Busters Al Capone ,Prince Buster Closer together and Dave Barkers Prisoner of Love .Great Day's ATB Simon Hunt ( I also picked up 3 acetates of nasty nasty by 999 and loads of great punk stuff including Leicester's very own "Agony Bag'S Rabies is a killer)

another record store down steps off deansgate was hime and addison owned by barry ancill...also known as barry's record rendevouz,they had all the latest pressings out of the past etc.

i didn't discover the shop till 1973 but am sure it was going for many years before,roger eagle dj at the original twisted wheel got alot of early r &b releases from there.atbjim.

Hi Jim, Could have been one of the places we use to visit then! The place that comes to mind was just a few shops in on the left hand side as you came from Ralphs shop direction across Deansgate it was like going down 3 to 5 steps to someones cellar but used to get bits of british stuff there, Then back to the car and up to One Stop Records that as I remember was a new build shop on the front of piccadilly railway station! Remember getting a good swop one Saturday on a copy of Baby Help Me On British Red Atlantic that I had picked up only hours earlier at Blackburn record exchange the owner Dave saved me 2 copies kept one and dealt the other in the One Stop with some guy in there with the old woolies 50 box, Big tune at the time!! hi john, that do's sound like spinn in then, ralphs was situated on corporation st which ran paralell to deansgate, spinn in was owned by gary lainne who was a dj at the club next to the shop think it was called either the top twenty or top of the town. atb jim.

Most of them have gone now.

The only ones in a 50 mile radius of me is Mark Speakmans shop "funky feet" in Rhyl which is fantastic and well worth a visit.

He has a great selection of original tunes and all the great new soul 7 inches from around the globe !

One left in Chester called "grey n pink" which has been there since the 1980s and sells vintage 45s .... but you really have to be lucky as the stock doesn't

change much.

And threre is one in Portmadog which has a few thousand LPs on sale at any time - you may get a 60s John Lee Hooker LP on Stateside in good nick or

something

but that's a good day.

So that's North Wales record shops covered !

A couple of others in Manchester that haven't had a mention: Robinsons Records on Blackfriars Street and Global Records (later Yanks) in a basement off Oxford Road - where Richard Searling worked at one point. There was also a stall in the underground market that was good. I guess so many of us were doing all these in a circuit that bargains were hard to find. Some of my best were in odd places - in a first floor room above a papershop in Chorlton, a stall on Altrincham Market and (of all places) in a supermarket in Stretford precinct where every week I checked the couple of boxes of imports that were 50p and suddenly one week there was an influx of Blue Stax and Mirwood. Happy days.

All that's left for us now is King Bee in Chorlton.

Hi, As a kid I lived in Reddish (twice) and the second time I was 12 when we moved ! I used to buy stuff on Oriole records and later Stateside Etc from a television shop called Englands near Reddish square! I can remember looking through the amber coloured film blinds they used to pull down on a Wednesday (their half day) after school looking at the new release's they used to hang down the window in plastic sleeves!! could you imagine the joy to find something like that these days!! Euphoria!!

It always seemed like military exercise in those days--Every Saturday jump a train to Manc Picadilly and spend all day record hunting in Ralphs and Spin in and anywhere else where there might be a 'sniff' of soul lol--wasn't there an outdoor market(as well as the indoor market) where there were stalls and stalls of 45's(possibly towrds Strangeways end?)--not all soul but the occasinal gem on British could be unearthed

Hitch a lift home calling in at various shops en route---Lekkermans in levenshulme? did a cracking range of Ben shermans and harringtons for free......

Oh and nearly forgot --a local shop to us was Bewes in Burslem where Mr Minshull was selling the wares.

Breeden and Middletons in Crewe as well??

...and another Cath Jones's in Sandbach----many a happy afternoon skiving school and digging around in there in the late 60's

Hi, I was down Stoke way one time working as a rep and spotted this record shop so as you do swift 'u' turn to see what it 's about got a couple a bits but didn't stay to long as I couldn't get my head around the guy that ran it keep calling me "me ducks" I got a bit concerned!! payed up and Pi**ed off!! Also found a cracker coming out of Liverpool one day I think the area was called Fazakerley, on a main road and this place had allsorts of stuff rock 'n'roll ,pop,soul you name it! just walls full of lists of 45's and albums in stands. the outdoor market stall was just up the road from Tib street where the barrow boys were, behind market street and next to Yate's wine bar , wish someone would open a BLOB shop here in the Hague !

Seem to remember a "Vallances" in Sheffield on Chapel walk, around the mid seventies, one of the last record shops that I can remember having listening booths.

Hi have a look at www.recordshopcity.co.uk . It covers Manchester's remaining record shops plus a few in Prestwich, Stockport and Bolton.

Of course there are. There are about three in North London where I always find good records at reasonable prices. Plus a brilliant place in South London. Also, am just back from my holiday home in Catalunya where I came up with a satifying little haul of 7"s. You don't expect me to tell you where these shops are, do you?

2 i know off still selling good stuff is That Beatin Rhythm in Manchester and Records and Relics in Blackpool which has 2 parts 1 where they have LP's and cheap singles like 50p and plenty of pop and rock etc. then next part is all 50's and 60's and some 70's has a lot of soul but dosen't know what is Northern. Bob Slater has been in few times. he also had an original Peterborough Wirrina poster for Phoenix soul club in mid 70's but wouldn't sell it.

Records and relics is were a certain mr.W found a big rare 45 that mr manship sold for Over £2k!!

I was in there in October on a visit from Canada and came out with some cracking UK issue oldies for 2 quid each!!!. Willie Mitchell, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Soul Sisters on Sue, they were in a box behind the counter.

I did leave a Blow Out The Sun UK RCA demo in the boxes behing the curtains if you are quick.

There is a place in Peterborough House of the Boardeline down some allyway near tattoo place that sells records here. Been here years, has loads of old soul/funk LP's and Motown usually sold by condition. So if you get an LP for £5 and same one he selling for £10 it will be based on condition. I saw he only had record collector price guide from 2000 and hadn't updated it.

Mind you i asked once if he had any Northern soul singles, was told no yet as i was browsing the normal selection of soul singles there was at least 5 and about 5 in the Atlantic/staxx section there were Northern ie LJ Johnson, Jimmy James - A Man Like Me, Frankie Valli - You're Ready Now etc. Maybe more if i knew some of the titles, Maybe he don't have a clue what is what

outdoor stall still there ! Kingbee run by Les Hare, still going strong in chorlton on wilbraham road.there was a huge record shop in blackpool , me ed and vernon got ensconsed in after a cala gran weekender, on the road just behind and parallel with the promenade, sold all genres, but the jazz funk, modern soul and soul album section was full of rarities and classics, rmemeber v thumbin through the jazz funk section , goin , :sigh , bloody ell , used to have that , an that , look at bloody price that goes for naa, i ad that un all, and that, " im standing scratchin me head cause id not heard of any of em. We spent the entire afternoon in there , and hadnt got round half of it.

You Need To ask if He has any old stock stashed away you never know what you might find!!

I worked in nottingham early 80's, and rob (rob smith's records), kindly sold me two records, amongst others, I had off him, Ivorys- please stay, and Satisfactions- Take it or leave it. There was another record shop, next door, way ahead records, they did promotion for rock concerts, and got all cbs demos, at the time, they kept all the rock, and sold me all the soul.

Apparently Rob Knows where Everything is in His Shop And Yet Anyone Who's been says you struggle to get in!!
