NEV Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 It's fair to say the funk scene has always been with us.. But i think in general we are discussing sounds that have made that transition into the Northern scene . My fave of them all at the mo has to be FRED WILLIAMS -TELL HER (SOLO) ,being spun out by Big George Mahoud (usually at my request:) ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmv8BRBjHts God i wish this record were'nt so hard to find ,like most things on the label . Another biggie on the label and a big Marc Forrest spin THERON AND DARRELL - I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER If this is the future of the Northern scene then im a big fan
Corbett80 Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 (edited) Theron & Darryl i can understand but i'm very surprised that Fred Williams has been well received in soul clubs. The vocal is very soulful but the pace of the 45 isn't condusive to dancefloor action. I'm making it sound like i don't think its fantastic though, which isn't true. Been a fan of it since it came out on the Midwest comp a few years ago. Edited September 15, 2010 by corbett80

Yeah but thats cos im from the soulful crossover scene and my legs move slower than the uptempo nighter people:D Seriously though Joel when its played out loud it's amazing how this record just grows and grows
NEV Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I just picked up one of these for next to nowt and can't believe how good a job they've done with this song Not the greatest vocal but tempo wise i love it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXDhA0q8TEM

Dylan Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Yes, Sam has had it the last 6 months. I remember first night he played it in a big room. Think Arthur followed him. Then marc. I actually heard it 5 years ago from Callum in Australia and took me 2 years to secure one after that. As i said, I had a good 3 years out of it in the small rooms. Good to see it transfer into the big venues at last. I can hazzard a guess as to who put callum onto it. sam played it at soul essence this year not sure its a 45 I get too excited about. Its OK but certainly not amazing. carleen and the groovers would be more my cup of tea if we are on carolins funk but thats far less likely to be played at a northern night.
Chalky Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 I can hazzard a guess as to who put callum onto it. sam played it at soul essence this year not sure its a 45 I get too excited about. Its OK but certainly not amazing. Think the same as you Dylan. Pretty average as far as a record goes but it goes down well with the dancers and that's all that matters really. Much prefer the Clay Brown on the same label, Why You Want To Change, that is a good record!! IMO of course!

Would say both the Clay Browns on the same label for me Chalky but then that kind of soul is my groove and this is kinda focusing on the more funkier soul . Hope you are well

Hope you are well I'm good Nev, likewise I hope. Gotta agree with you and know this is more for the funkier stuff, but as we were talking about Wally Coco and Flourentine I thought I'd mention Clay Brown Some of the funkier stuff is good, some of it second rate and think at the end of the day if the 60's stuff was still being found much of the funkier edged stuff wouldn't get a look in.

That's a valid point but at the end of the day this is the evolution of the scene and is a sound that a lot of people not only relate to but have actually embraced as a integral part of the scene today. Personally I think you have to experience it in a venue rather than sat at home or in the car.

The record is fantastic but like you say the pace is too slow.

Corbett80 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) LT & The Soullful Dynamics on Solo is a beautiful lilting crossover cut as well! Nev> Fred Williams is a great record, I think in the Midwest Funk notes it said you can almost imagine the tumbleweeds blowing across the road when you hear it, its very desolate and haunting. Would actually love to hear it out, especially if it does work in a club enviroment. Must get off my arse and get to a night BG is playing at. Touches of the Small Society in there too?! I haven't heard a bad Florentine record yet, love all of the three i know. Does anyone have a discography / label info? Edited September 16, 2010 by corbett80

Little-stevie Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 It was Paul's set, not Karl's but believe me, Karl plays stuff that I cream my pants to and flit around like that funky Dodo Creaming of the pants are always welcome.... It can't get better than that..... Always loved the funk edged side of soul.... Moist comes to mind Karen.... See you soon at Radcliffe for some more cream Great topic... So much tuuuuuuuuuuuuuunage still out there to find for a lot of us when you let your ears run free..... Get out there folks... Lots to offer at quite a few venues up and down this land.... Not a tune for all mate but when it came out the speakers in the little room at Radcliffe, i and many others were taken to another place... Don't have to be the future for all but i am sure there is room for it at some venues.... Many of these tunes featured aint gonna hit the spot for some.. No worry... The ammount of venues means we can all get a little of what we like... Be it.. The more tradional northern.... Or funk edged Ghetto thats as dirty as dirty can be ....
Wiganer1 Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 im sorry but its bad enough having dreary mid tempo soul at niters now mid tempo funk,,,,,,,,,,,arrrr ,,, lol ....ill get me coat....

'I still love you' being another great example I gotta agree with most things said on this whole thread so far, brilliant music this is. Tempo variences, soul funk crossing over - debates about where it starts and ends, great stuff. A lot of the tunes mentioned thus far are quite big on the money stakes but the great thing about this stuff being relatively undiscovered (compared to say the out and out 60's soul Chalky elluded to earlier) is that you can pick a lot up cheap. Just a case of getting out there, digging and listening. Original post mentioned about a compilation CD; Thinking i'll be making one for my own ears at home based on this thread, awsome stuff!! It closed down nearly 30yrs back.lol ---- hi nev..i know that mate,,,ive also been on the niter scene for 29 years and know my stuff not just wigan oldies... but i do worry about the niter scene,, i dont mind the genre as long as its good ....i attend many niters and will dance to any dj that plays good dance music 60s - 90s trouble is there is alot of that i dont like personally and it worries me that this stuff will come the norm but if the majority like it slow and moody and funky good luck to them and ill be happy to stay in the minority liking the uptempo stuff.... enjoy your music whatever ure into mark
Guest Polyvelts Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Northern was always Funky when I first got into it. 'Ladies Choice', 'Can you imagine that' , 'Cut your motor off' etc etc, it was the oldies revival scene that killed it off - Great to see it coming back in a lot of varying tempos - so long as it's soulful ! And I for one will always welcome the return of the Flute Solo !!!!! What about this stunner Christian Plique - Hot Foxy Woman

Guest rosemary Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Heres a few clips of very varying tracks. I think the term 'funk' in any context , even when followed by soul, scares traditionalists. Its an innappropriate term really. But, will have to do i guess! Paul Sadot - Funky Soul Mix - Had to plug my speakers in to listen to these, absolutely fantastic, great funk sounds.......
