As some one mentioned Any Cleethorpes CD wht not try

"The Cleethorpes Story" I compiled for Goldmine Records back

in 1997, Available in CD and Ltd Edition Vinyl, Not a bad place to start

I don't think, Good Luck and enjoy, Rick

The type of funk being played on today's northern scene certainly wasn't being played back in the day.

i wasn't around back in the day, but have to say some of the funkier stuff getting spins now is just fantastic

Yeah funky northern is my thing too, along with mid tempo 70's, oh and modern!

As a lot of this stuff seems to have just exploded in the popularity stakes in last few years, you might struggle to get a really good compilation cd. Although suggestions so far are good.

My advice would be try and track down set lists from guys like karl heard et al and make your own up for use around the house. Amazing tuneage

you'll be bloody lucky to get a set list off karl, and to be fair i dont blame him, he is churning up some seriously up front dancers at the moment and there is no comparison in the country imho

prime example for starters has to be rudy love - suffering wrath on canyon. dont know how to put up youtube links but its sure on there

Can you give us a couple of examples, mate that l can listen to on youtube....or anywhere else for that matter...Cheers! :sweatingbullets:

OK then Webby, I'll stick my neck out with these three :-

Rudy Love - Sufferin' Wrath

Billy Byrd - Lost in a Crowd

Ricky Allen - Cut You Loose (the version on Tampoo)

Last two are definitely on Refosoul, and that nice Mr Croasdell has put Rudy Love on Kent's recent "Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities Vol 4", along with a more mid-tempo funky tune Salt & Pepper's "Man of My Word"

All top tunes, IMHO!

glad to see we agree on the rudy love. serious goosebumps with that bassline.

Would love to hear what's been played around now as I'm getting more and more into these funky sounds.

Would the Stratolines on Federal qualify as funky northern?

Posted

Dont know if any of these are representative of todays 'funky' northern, but they're certainly working for me !!!

Inell Young - Next ball game

Ralph Young - cool off the floor

Jack Jacobs - I believe it's alright

Rudy Love and Company - Suffering Wrath

Mixed Sugar - It's a bad feeling

Joyce Hopson - I surrender

Bobby King - Don't give up hope

Jimmy raye - That'll get it

Bobby Dixon - Woman you made me

Christine Adams - Lonliness is always around

Little denise stephenson - would it be me

Don't know why this isn't a monster. Such a marvelous record! I read HeWhoShallNotBeNamed listed as a personal fave, but did he ever (or someone else) spun it on a regular basis? The flip is great, too.

Here's a cheapie for ya.....:sweatingbullets:

Nice one, prolly more funk than northern, though.

PS Listening to Chalky's podcast from Andy Dyson's playbox and there's some fine examples...

Ralph Jackson aint bad either !!!!!!!!!!!

Think Johnny Taylor started it all with 'Who's Making Love' and 'Friday Night'... :sweatingbullets:

Been singing it all day for some unknown reason " Somebodies been a loving my old lady" :sleep3:

Deja vu or a taste of things to come ??

I have been trying to sort of compile a funky soulful playlist in my itunes because I quite like the funk variation in tempo withing soul and I have come up with these on my travels through the genre so far :

I am still waiting for Mr Sadots CD .... hint hint

I loved the tunes Ih eard played out by George in Manchester, couldn't tell you what they were sorry

Deloras Ealey - I've been looking

This is a superb example of in your face soulful funk first heard by me listening to a guy connected with Jazzman records whome I have forgotten the name of now . Ian Wright I think ? It was on a show with Keb Darge a few years back where he explains its a real beat up copy but took him ages to find. I only know of one other person that has it and his is MINT ! Steve Hiscock.

Step it up - The Bamboos Featuring Alice Russell

One that really got under my skin last year

Sly & the Family Stone - Dance to the Music

Golden oldie Sly could open a whole can of stuff for you

Marve Whitney - Unwind yourself again another artist along with James Brown that could have a whole bag of stuff worth looking into.

Curtis Mayfield - Superfly

Absolute Funkin Class !

Avarage Whiteband - Pick up the pieces

Again club funk but still a great dancer

Manifesto - A case of time

K-Jee - Night lighters

Isley Brothers - Is this your thing

Real sassy soulful funk

Bobby Byrd - I know you got soul

10/10 for Pat Bleasdale for throwing this into her play mix

Ria Curry - Everythings gonna be alright

Spanky Wilson - Kissin my love

And finally my very first funk influenced soul tune bought at Notre Dam 10 years ago was Koffies - You put a wall between us. Picked it up for 30 quid ! off Tommy Potts
