Discussed this chap on here before,Stomper in black with P- Funk on the back of his shirt about 1.28 into the footage,

Remember seeing him at Wigan all the time, anyone know who he is,

Is he a member on here and why P_ Funk on the shirt ??

I had the "Mothership Connection" album by Parliament,And the track on it called "Make my funk the P funk"

But that wasn't a very Northern tune,100% funk

Yes me and you have dicussed him before,mate.....He used to dance near the blokes. bogs.....Remember when This England team wanted to film him he just walked off.....No spins acrobats etc........just the best dancer the Casino ever seen......Nodoubt whatsoever...

If you go to youtube and type in Curtis Lee Northern soul it takes you to that clip,

On the right of the main clip there are links to others,

There is one in black and white showing the same sequence but with a lot more of Mr P- Funk,

He walks off like you said in your post but then comes back a few seconds later,And carries on dancing,Must have been an out-take from the This England prog

Posted

Found it after long last.........what a mover......why P-Funk? We'll propably never kow,mate...

I wonder if the black and white clip is an outtake,He was doing the same dance and then just seemed to walk off and then back on again,

Thought that someone on here would have known him though

Totally disagree with you there, I don't think he's very good at all, he's all over the place, I used to think that at the time as well. Scottish wasn't he? I could dance better than that!

If you look at Pete Ricketts, the black guy (wearing shades!), they show mainly his feet unfortunately, one pan up with the camera I think, now there weren't many better dancers around than him...he was brilliant

But you don't know what tune he was dancing to there,Pete, cos it certainly wasn't the one playing.....Now if it was 'Captain Of My Ship' he's hit the nail right on the head.... :unsure:yes.gif

That is the one tune I really remember him dancing to,

I bet you it was and all

He was my mate Dave Ward from Leyland

fantastic dancer - but I would never tell him to his face! ha!

loved the funkier stuff like a lot of us so had P Funk put onto his teeshirt

Also altered his Wigan Casino badge to include the word Funk (see memories of casino thread)

Dave packed in the soul thing mainly at the end of Wigan

Still lives in Blackburn/Preston area.

We all used to buy Parliament/Roy Ayers/ Crown Heights/EWF/ Brass Construction etc and listen to em midweek

then off the casino at weekend

Dave did just about every Saturday from 1975 till 1980ish I would say

happy days indeed!

Una from Oz on here remembers him too...................

Many thanks for that reply Myself and a few other people here on SS have discussed him many times before,And yes what a fantastic dancer,One of the many I remember from my Casino days,

It was the P_Funk t shirt that stood out to me back in 76,

I had the "Parliament" album myself but it was a guilty secret,

If you contact him ever,Please let him know about this thread,

And even now after all these years,That he is still remembered by people who never knew him,For what he did on the floor,

Wonderful and Amazing to watch,

I've been on here for About 3 years now,And one of the first things I ever talked about was MR P_ FUNK

I bet Sandy Holt won it then !!

:(:yes: Sandy couldn't dance but he could do acrobatics.....miind you l'd better shut up cos didn't he go on to be European kick bxing champion or something? :)

Yes he did Phil and still teaches in Bolton,Press my link below

Thought he was a pretty good dancer myself,Don't think anyone could touch him on those high kicks,Mind you the Thai boxing must have helped on that count

My link

l could have him no messing! :)

Only if he was on a bus dressed as a she,

I can see the headline now

"Cross dressing Thai Boxing Champion Attacked,!!

By One Time Substance Abuser",

The former Thai boxer stated "I think it was my Northern Soul bag that attracted him to me"

He asked me really strange questions like "What was the best record on R C A"

When I said I did not know

He then put on a mohair jumper and some strange plastic shoe's ,And asked me if "I could make his Funk the P - Funk"

I then ran away screaming "MUM it's that scouser from the bus again"

Hey Dave if that was you I apologise, I was nearly on the end of those telescopic legs many times, and I'm sure you could dance me into the ground

I have always thought the black lad was the best dancer filmed in any of those clips and that for his footwork as its very together and neat, always been a fan ,advocate of such a style over and above(sounds like an acrobatic term itself, over and above) the outright acrobatic, some good moves at the right time in time look well good of course as long as not dominating over all else, always liked watching good spinners,Meself I like a dark place in the shadows to try to do my thing(that also sounds very ambiguos/).Could never do any acrobatics myself but could spin a little otherwise two left feet but couldnt help them moving when the right records were (are)playing

Dave Ward contacted me a few years back on the subject. Pete Ricketts - great dancer, but one of many at the time - was receiving most of the attention from the cameras. Dave put himself in front of the cameras for bit of a laugh. These are This England out-takes but the tune at the time was Ton Of Dynamite. Easter 1977 so the contrasting dance styles and attire have moved on. I could watch Dave dance all night but the late Pete Ricketts shades it for me. Now seen this clip two dozen times plus on YouTube...sad but true...

Shock Horror people attending Wigan may have actually been to the Mecca first

and been listening to Funk or Jazz Funk.

There were more of us than some people may think.

The P-Funk T shirt was worn for a couple of nights only, and I don't think anyone ever called me P-Funk to my knowledge...I was known, like most of us, by first name and where you came from, I was probably  'Dave from Leyland'. 1977 was a time of change, the Casino promoters started to 'ban' certain new records because they were too funky. I though that was wrong, hence the infamous T shirt. I liked the way Pete Ricketts danced, but never spoke to him, a nod, or a wink, at the end of a great dance record, was about it. I didn't rate circus acrobatics or side-to-side stomping, although these are the dancers who feature on 'This England'. I hate the clips on You-tube, they are out of sync. and backed by the wrong music. (It was Ton of Dynamite) ! Who was better, I don't care, I danced for me. If people enjoyed watching, that's a bonus. Best move...that snap back heel turn! Regret...that I couldn't spin....If I could have built that in...I'd have been there, done that, and worn the infamous T Shirt !

Your time was my time. Remember very well being stood by the dancefloor watching you stomping and wishing I could do the same.

Interestingly, last year I seen one of the 'kids' doing that 'Windmill leg' thing you used to do, clearly they'd been watching the outakes as well.

You should start some dance classes........ be nice to have some who actually CAN dance teaching all these newbies.

Pete - sorry but I don't have the full story. Read on-line of his passing but the circumstances were not specific; can't remember if it was a family member who made the comment but it was probably linked to the video clip.

ATB from sunny Pittsburgh but records are pretty thin on the ground...
