Guest Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I have been reading through an old copy of Blues & Soul from 1977 , which details / celebrates Wigan Casino's 4th Anniversary . It states in a roll call for DJs who played there from its' opening in 1973 , that two of them were Ian Levine and Colin Curtis . As far as I know , Colin never played there , but deep in the canyons of my mind , I seem to recall that Ian had been booked , but when he turned up to DJ , he left without playing a record after half an hour , following his decision that WC was not for him . Anybody confirm ? Malc
Guest Dave Turner Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I seem to recall Levine being there on stage but for the life of me can't remember if he played a set, I have a feeling he may have done though. Memories shot to pieces
Wiganer1 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 ian did dj at wigan ,,got a tape of about 40 mins of him spinning laura green etc,,, not sure about colin...
Guest Dave Turner Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Malc, From a Curtis interview "Again, that statement will be disputed, but from where I was sitting the way Wigan Casino developed, I wasn't interested in going... I think I played there once I think, but I didn't pursue it further. For me it was going backwards. When they introduced the oldie room Mr M's. I actually said that on the night. It was the beginning of the end" https://www.djhistory.com/interviews/colin-curtis
Citizen P Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I'm (almost) certain that Levine did a spot, remember him playing Job Opening. Tony
Pete S Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I went to that and taped most of the night and no way did Ian Levine do a spot. Martyn Ellis did but apart from that, same dj's as usual.
Davetay Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I'm (almost) certain that Levine did a spot, remember him playing Job Opening. Tony Ian deff did at least two nights, about three weeks after it opened Oct 73 and again in Nov 73, 1st or 2nd sat. The Nov one he played David & Giants, most people waiting for "Superlove" and "Ten Miles High" came on.

Benji Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 No denying that Dave but the first post asks if he dj'd on 24/9/77, which I don't think he did Think you're wrong. first post asks if IL or CC ever dj'd there.
Steve L Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Pity he's not a member on here (IL) then maybe he could confirm:ph34r:
Guest Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 (edited) Think you're wrong. first post asks if IL or CC ever dj'd there. Correct Herr Schlamp . The B & S article on WC's 4th anniversary , states that IL and CC were among among the DJs who played there , following its' opening in the September of 1973 . Knowig Colin as I do , it has never come up in conversations I have had with him relating to the 70s and venues , that he " did " WC , hence leading me to think he did not ....... but I could be wrong . As for IL , this is where the debate come in - did he or did he not ? I thought he did not ( see my statement in my original post ) , but again , it could have been on a night that I did not attend . Any chance of posting up the tape you have with IL on Mark ? Malc Edited September 3, 2010 by Malc Burton

Pauldonnelly Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 (edited) I remember CC djing at the Casino would be late 1974 Edited September 3, 2010 by PaulDonnelly
Davetay Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I remember CC djing at the Casino would be late 1974 If he did, that would explain the bit about Mr Ms in a earlier post. It was the back end of 74 when Ms opened (1st Ann?) I think.

Guest Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 (edited) I remember CC djing at the Casino would be late 1974 So that gets me the double up then , missing the night Colin was on as well as the one with IL . Malc Edited September 3, 2010 by Malc Burton
Billyboy Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 (edited) I attended Wigan every week from 1973 on & can confirm both Ian & Colin did indeed DJ in a competetive manner at Station Rd... Unless they were cardboard cut outs.... Edited September 3, 2010 by Billyboy
Davetay Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 its was deffo the main room No one said Colin was in Ms, if you read the earlier post Colin was quoted as saying "A oldies room this is the begining of the end"

Anybody confirm ? Malc Ian Levine DJ'd twice in late 73 i brilliant sets both but just a bit too upfront for most of Wigan crowd. Colin Curtis also DJ'd once late 73 and i think twice later. Certainly remember him playing BillY Woods - Let Me Make You Happy . I think in Casino's first couple of months Russ was getting lots of offers from people wanting to DJ there but opted from Richard and Kev Roberts
Eddie Hubbard Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I saw Colin DJ at The Casino around the time World Column and Lou Edwards were popular , I think he replaced Richard who was on holiday at the time .I know Ian Fishwick DJ'd at the early nighters at the Casino , which could have caused some confusion over whether Levine played there .Cheers ,Eddie

Cardboard cut out it is then.

Guest Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 (edited) You were probably banned Godfrey Rob That was 1977 my dear Pike . Thank you to the concensus of my fellow SS members , that both CC and IL did DJ at WC . My missing them on the nights when they shared the stage with the grand piano , could be attributed to either physically not attending , or being there but mentally not attending Malc Edited September 4, 2010 by Malc Burton
