Simsy Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Toughie this. Pretty sure it's from a free Scenesville tape, covered up as "There Was A Time" - Butch sounding male mid tempo stepper. If ever a record sounded like a thousand pounds on first spin, this is it! Stroke them there chins and let us know any ideas.. Tony Smith II, I'm looking at you ..
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 It will be a Nick Browon thingi then, I think I have it somewhere, red orange sleeve or maybe not, thrown out the tape player a year ago with a shed load of tapes. Sound clip Simsy.

Sound clip Simsy. Yeah I've got the tape. I haven't got the lead that goes from the headphone socket to line in, else I'd freecorder an mp3 of it. Feckin amazing track. Maybe I'll write on Dawn's wall, see if I can speed things along ...
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 (edited) Mini jack to phono leads, you don't have a micraphone. Edited August 28, 2010 by Prophonics 2029
Chalky Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Kae Williams - Our Love Is Dying. Unissued. Would've been Andy Rix spinning it.
Mick Holdsworth Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 This is Kae Williams - Our Love Is Dying Cheers Mick Holdsworth
Simsy Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 Thanks chaps! Whose got em? How many copies? How much? Will search for other threads..

Chalky Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Arthur Fenn. - Andy Rix - (cheers Chalx) & mick h, . rob thomas & mick & mo Andy Dyson I think the first to get a copy from Rob several years ago, about the time Lifeline started or just after and went big on the all-nighter scene. This was after Andy Rix had retired. As well as those mentioned, I have a copy and several others now.
Chalky Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Any idea on price for this? there is no price, it is unissued. Few copies given to DJ's by Rob. Others got hold of it as these things happen.
Md Records Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 I got a slightly different take via a friend in Philadelphia. Kae was a local D.J. and I did have an album of his on Junior records (sadly, a compilationnof other people's stuff). I believe he's dead now. Des Parker
Simsy Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 there is no price, it is unissued. Few copies given to DJ's by Rob. Others got hold of it as these things happen. Low grade priceless then.. Des Parker Not the sort of thing you'd take in yer play box, but I'd love to hear it Des!
Jumpinjoan Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 (edited) I remember the first time I heard this - Lifeline at Sheridans. Andy D played it. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Incredible Edited August 30, 2010 by jumpinjoan
Andy Rix Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 As has been said it is Kae Williams - There was a time - unissued I covered it up as Herman Lewis - Our Love is Dying I'm not exactly sure when I first played it but seem to think it might have been at a Cleethorpes Weekender .... I'm fairly certain it was when I first played Moses Smith - Try My Love, which I c/u as Bobby Sheen ... I had them cut on the same acetate Maybe somebody will know when that was but I packed up in in 2003, I think, so it would have been a couple of years prior to that Andy
Guest Matt Male Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Low grade priceless then.. These copies... Carvers? Must be, unissued etc.. I was wondering that. What was the original copy Andy, an acetate, a master? Are there several acetates and everyone else has carvers? Any more test pressings turned up? Great Look At Your Box info. Beautiful record, 100% northern SOUL. Wish i had one.

So you have the acetate and gave a few carvers to your mates, fair play !!!! Stunning tune !
Andy Rix Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 "So you have the acetate and gave a few carvers to your mates, fair play !!!!" Not exactly ..there is no 'rea' acetate ... just the original master tape from which my acetate was cut via a CD. It was Rob Thomas who subsequently gave CDs to others to do with as they wished. I was never that enthusiastic about the track. I thought it was average. Rob simply loved it Andy
Simsy Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Well that answers the price question - 25 quid from Vinyl Carvers.. Soul Police stance - Rob Thomas given copies/cd's/carvers okay to play out as that was then etc - any out playing carver chancers these days, tsk..

Never really got the chance at the time with you retiring to reach it's potential. Cleethorpes I think the first place I heard it but I can't remember the year., could be 2001/2002? Could have been about the same time as Butch started playing Lifesaver???
Jumpinjoan Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 I was never that enthusiastic about the track. I thought it was average. Why would you play a track you thought was average? Would you play a 'known' track you thought was average?

Chalky Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Was played at the Dome round about this sort of time also. who by? I don't remember hearing it there but then again I can't remember breakfast some days

Chalky Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Nah not Dome, Scenesville - would have been Andy? Would've been Scenesville if anywhere down there, Andy was a resident.

Lou Courtney and Barbara Lewis were the turns - can't remember, but remember the stunning gold dress she wore. One of the Shirebrook lot was raving about it and we foolishly offered you a Danny Woods on Correctone as a swap (you offered us 'This Time' Ray Pollard and something else (which I foolishly refused - but that was Cleethorpes in them early days, drunken daftness).
Russ Vickers Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Fantastic record & always does the business for me............I played it at Brighton Beach Nighter at the weekend & got the reaction you would expect. Thanks Andy, Russ

Andy Rix Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 In response to Jumping Joan Why would you play a track you thought was average? ... I think it' was about what I wanted to do at the time which was to play uptempo rare soul. So when compared to stuff like .. Marrying Kind .. Switch Around .. World Of Happiness ... Crying Time... The Hurting Is Over ... and so on, this didn't seem that exciting to me. Rob always loved the track so encouraged me to give it a push.. I liked it but didn't love it Would you play a 'known' track you thought was average? .. probably not .. Andy

I have to say that I find playing something that you don't love quite hard to understand. That said, I appreciate your honesty
Andy Rix Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Hi Andy. So you played it just because it was unknown even though you didn't rate it? I have to say that I find playing something that you don't love quite hard to understand. That said, I appreciate your honesty Not quite .. I did rate it but I didn't like it as much as the other stuff I was playing so it was down the pecking order. A lot of people did like it so it was sensible to listen to the opinion of others who often had better taste than I did. I think i was pretty narrow minded but not completely oblivious Andy

I think i was pretty narrow minded but not completely oblivious Andy I wasn't being funny with my comments Andy. Apologies if I came across that way. I suppose it is a little different for the likes of me who has never been in the position of having totally unknown stuff to play. If it had been me I would definitely have played Our Love Is Dying and would not have played Switch Around. I am probably a minority of one with that last comment

I am probably a minority of one with that last comment I didn't think you were being funny at all . It was a totally valid observation and a good question to ask. the fact that I adore Switch Around' just shows it's different strokes for different folks. I guess the important thing is they both got played and people had the chance to decide for themselves I'm really pleased Kae Williams is still out there and giving people enjoyment Andy
