Pete S Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 THE STORY OF JAMAICAN MUSIC PART 6: SPIRIT OF '69 * * * * * * * * * * Continuing on from our previous look at the birth of Reggae, "Boss Sounds", this show features more of the same but as you will see, much of the material is less frantic than the original ultra-fast reggae from 1968. Not all of the tracks here are actually from 1969, but this is a good example of the sort of thing that was being played in the clubs and sold in specialist shops at the time. I've included a few better known tracks this time such as Red Red Wine, Hold You Jack (the original cut to Wet Dream) and No More Heartaches; rude reggae with Wreck A Buddy and The Rise & Fall Of Laurel Aitken (it took me 22 years to find a copy of this, searching since I first heard it aged 12 at our local fair and finding one eventually in 1994 - now there's one on Ebay every week!); there are some tremendous instrumentals from The Upsetters; and beautiful vocal selections from Alton Ellis, Pat Kelly, Audrey and many more. Audrey's "Love Me Tonight" must surely by one of the best reggae tracks ever recorded in the UK. My personal favourite here is Keith Blake's "Musically" which is actually very late Rocksteady. Been after a copy of this for many a year. Thank goodness for Vinyl Carvers! * * * * * * * * * * https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/28512 Prince Buster - The Scorcher (Fab) / Ronald Russell - Rhythm Hips (Nu Beat) / Keith Blake - Musically (Blue Cat) / The Paragons - Left With A Broken Heart (Duke) / The Gaylets - Silen River Runs Deep (Island) / Prince Buster - New Dance Called Reggae (Fab) / The Upsetters - A Live Injection (Upsetter) / The Upsetters - Dry Acid (Punch) / Pat Kelly - How Long Will It Take (Gas) / The Uniques - Out Of Love (Trojan) / The Melodians - Ring Of Gold (Gas) / Laurel Aitken - Rise And Fall (J.J.) / Tony Tribe - Red Red Wine (Downtown) / Dennis Walks - Heart Don't Leap (Bullet) / Audrey - A Lover's Concerto (Downtown) / The Beltones - No More Heartaches (Trojan) / Paul & Randolph - It Ain't (Blank) / Soul Sisters - Wreck A Buddy (Amalgamated) / Alton Ellis - Vreaking Up (Trojan) / Derrick Morgan - Hold You Jack (Island) / The Upsetters - My Mob (Camel) / The Slickers - Nana (Blue Cat) / Ansil Collins - Secret Weapon (Amalgamated) / Monty Morris - Last Laugh (Doctor Bird) / George Dekker - Foey Man (Island) / The Reggaeites - Harris Wheel (Crab) / Audrey - Love Me Tonight (Downtown) .
