Always wondered what Jobee did for a living.

What gets me , is that Skip can remember that he was the " support act " - i.e. the purveyor of recorded entertainment between ML's two 45 minutes spots on the night - but the old tw*t cannot recall the date :boxing:

Major Lance in Boston : so near , yet so far .......

Further to my email several weeks ago to Boston Council , and the subsequent reply from / by a gentleman who works there , I received a further email today from him earlier today

Not good news I am afraid : the email reads as follows .......

Dear Malc :

Well you did say it was a long shot - I called round to see Dave Peatling , author of a local book about Boston Gliderdome and the bands and artists which appeared there .

Unfortunately Dave couldn't help and wasn't even familiar with Major Lance .

The Assembly Rooms' records wouldn't include the name of the band pr artist if they appeared there - just the name of the organiser .

Sorry we couldn't help.

Neil

The quest continues despite another dead end ......

Is the book still available?

I would like to get a copy for the wife who was a Boston lass and used to go to the Glider etc

Cheers

Steve

I'm not 100% sure but i think this book was done in conjunction with the boston standard so it might be worth contacting them yes.gif

Dave Peatling's book - " Goin' to the Dance : A Personal History of the Boston Gliderdrome " ( 2003 ) , is now out of print .

DP published the book himself , so there is no actual publishing company to refer to / contact .

Information wise , the ISBN references ( International Standard Book Number ) for the book were

ISBN -10 : 0954590309 and ISBN -13 : 978-0954590307 .

Try contacting Dave Turner - " Arkwright " on SS - to see if he can help .

i was also there cannot remember anything about a fight though

i am sure it was xmas eve cos there was much debate over whether to spoil our xmas dinner by eating something the nite before as it turned out i went without xmas dinner ( and a couple more as well )

been trying to remember what year it was and i reckon it was 1975

...i was there also..and i seem to remember it was summer ..cant remember a fight but as i was there on my own ( from Skegness) and had been biffed about before by Boston lads i kept well out of trouble..i'm sure Poke DJ'd as he ran a quiz over the MIC..asking if anyone could name the artist & following song..it was Anderson bros ..i seemed to be the only one who knew it..and rcvd an LP on dynovoice prob the Toys..as my prize. Major wore an emerald green jumpsuit..and signed autographed photos after the show in a small sideroom..we were allowed in , one at a time..ML looked really pissed off, so i uttered thanks and scrammed..i got the last train back to Skeg..and i think it was 1975..

I remember the major driving taxis down in Hove 75-76 during the summer ?

Wotcha! Yes, before my time here but I was entertained by a certain south coast promoters tales of breakfasts with the major in a Hove establishment. Ten years after ML had died.

And back on topic, my parents met at the glider, and the assembly's about to reopen as a nightclub so maybe ML will make another comeback from beyond the grave :)
