Spotted another collection on eBay [here] - finishes today - 201 records including a flight case.

It's been bid up to £690 and to me that looks a bit over the top. There seems to be a lot of boots,re-issues and pressings in there. There are a couple that look like they might be worth a few bob if they are originals but that's a big if.

Does nobody care for originals any more?

Still, I suppose at less than £4 a record with a free flight case it must look like a bargain to some. But at times like these I don't think I'd part with the thick end of a grand for it - to me these are records that are worth a quid each at best.

Wonder what it will finish at?

sold for £1.171.88p

Amazing.

Well done the seller, but i'd love to know what the buyer was thinking. Maybe they'd spotted something, maybe they thought it was a good deal at just over £4 a record? I'd love to know what goes through the heads of some buyers.

Wonder if it had anything to do with this description in the list?

Bargain, I'd have been bidding myself if I'd been able to raise a bit of money. Though before bidding I would have asked the seller to clarify the details of his description. look through the list and there's a good amount of titles that haven't been booted andeven if you work on the assumption that everything else is a boot it's still a bargain. £4 each, would expect to break up and resell on ebay for on average 4x as much because if the obvious big titles are all boots they are the 'right' boots from a sellers view, all stuff that gets good money when listed on ebay.

But I don't think they are boots, the titles that are originals (ie not been booted) show guy didn't just have a box of Wigan memories and pop stompers but more importantly here's a small part of his listing:

36.IM WHERE ITS AT- THE JADES-NITE LIFE REISSUE DEMO

37.I'LL HOLD YOU-FRANKI &JOHNNY-HICKORY DEMO

38.I NEED A TRUE LOVE/ CRYING CLOWN- EDDIE PARKER- TRIPLE'B' RECORDS

39.I FOUND SOMEONE TO TREAT ME- THE DE VONS-KING

40. I GOT THE FEVER-THE GEORGIA PROPHETS-ERIC

41. JOHNNIE ON THE SPOT-DENNIS EDWARDS-INT SOULSVILLE REISSUE FROM ABOUT 15YRS AGO

Note how 36 and 41 are described as boots/reissues and 40 clearly tells us it's a reissue due to being on Eric. 38, 39 are quality 45s that have never booted. So 37 a big oldie and booted in large numbers....why hasn't he marked this as a boot like 36 and 41? Probably because it's a real one, and that's what I'd have been asking before possibly bidding.

Sad but true....it's easier to make money selling boots/70s reissues than it is originals.

You've got far too much time on your hands mate

So what's the total resale value of the choice 45s if sold individually?

I'm absolutely amazed at that price. Surprised it fetched more than £500.

I wouldn't buy a boot for £4 then ask four times that amount for it, most of mine are £5 to £10 each with £8 being the general price. Pressings are very hit and miss.

Hi Pete,

I hardly ever set sale pressings because, like you, I just couldn't put daft prices on them. So I tend to list them on ebay every couple of months, clearly advertised as a reissue/boot etc and start them all at 99p. Then I don't feel guilty getting £120 for a Pages boot, £50+ for stuff like Del Larks, Mel Britt etc etc. If people are willing to pay that sort of money whilst being fully aware that what they are bidding on is a boot then I'll take their money........I once sold a Deam Parrish boot for £24 and 5 minutes later won an auction for a mint original for £12.79 .

Plus there's a few nice originals there and you've got to assume the people bidding high got confirmation from the seller that some of the records likely to be boots are actually original.

Anyway enough of the boring stuff......you seen Jones goal for us against Stoke :yes: now that's a boot that's got to be priceless

Thing is though mate theres loads on there which 'could' be originals but they aren't marked as boots. Billy Prophet for instance. No way is that gonna be orig.

I've got 175 'new' boots and pressings to sell, maybe I'll take your advice and do ebay 99p.

Stupid thing is, I've got some cracking originals on ebay buy it now, cheap, and nobodys touching them.

(I never knew you were a Wolves supporter, found a really good channel to watch the football live now so watched it as it happened, first half we played superbly)

I asked about the Marvin Gaye - Hangin On ; see if was original Jobete Acetate and it wasn't...........

I would have needed to ask about 50 questions to ascertain if was anymore value and as some are listed as boots / reissues and some not, it would only be worth a "pot luck" bid in my view............Maybe the buyer will strike lucky, but something tells me not........

Very true Pete, it's unlikely to be a real Billy Prophet but have you seen what the 70s pressing of that sells for on ebay, easy £30-40 . There's loads of crappy boots that are nearly unsellable but there's also lots that are £20-£50. I don't know why people pay £80 for that Frank Wilson Soul label look a like that was done a few years back...it sells for more than the UK TMG!

Cheap originals are becoming almost impossible to sell and that's heartbreaking because it just shows that buyers aren't interested in hearing anything new to them, good soul nusic is of no apparent interest. Prices on cheap originals have taken a battering but prices on boots keep climbing and that's also true of big, rare classics. Whatever people's view on boots, I strongly believe they are restricting the entire scene from being able to continue beyond the next 10 years..

Wolves.... . Used to go to lot of home games but not been for ages now. We're far from the most expensive clubs when it comes to tickets etc...but it's a minimum £60 spend...train, match ticket, food etc and that's a lot to pay for 90mins

Agree! It would be a nice little star up package for someone at around a fiver each!!

Astounded this fetched in excess of one thousand pounds.

Myself and other dealers like Pete Smith , Adam Topping just look on in constant amazement.

Whenever I list on SS always get punters asking for a discount on the listed price.

Then Ebay has punters scurrying for a collection that has bootlegs and pressings amongst some run of the mill 45s and look at that finishing price. !!

Well done to the seller but in the words of Marvin Gaye makes me wanna holler

Soul Source is the worst place to sell records that there is, and thats no meant to offend "the site" but the amount of tightwad customers is f*cking unbelievable, like you I have people asking for discount on even £25 records, or free postage. Thats after they've already been discounted or listed lower than anywhere else. There is a topic elsewhere about this but I closed it down before I murdered some of the people posting on it.

The thing is though Glyn, I had records like Chaumonts, Sandra Phillips (Okeh), Patti Austin (Leave a little love), Stingers etc, all up as buy it nows on ebay for way way less than book price, complete waste of time. That's after listing them twice on SS! Maybe I should double the prices or write some spiel about them being super rare and auction them instead. "Super rare underplayed oldie, Al Wilson on Pye Disco demand, this will go massive, starting bid £50"

You should advertise them as rare boots and stick them in an old plastic record box..................unopened since Wigan closed and watch the bids fly in.

I know exactly what you mean Pete. Always seems to be a strange kudos mystique to buying soul records for well in excess of their true value. Ebay is full of small time hustlers selling bootlegs ( recent ones ) not the sought after 70s ones for £9.99 , £4.99 and checking the completed histories selling sucessfully.

Certain dealers have always been able to command high prices - £5 vinyl they sell at £15 - what is it all about.

An old adage I always come back to - a shirt is in the shop at £15 - down the road at £50 which would you buy identical shirts. You know the answer , but does not apply to some record buyers !!

Incidentally this does not seem to apply if I sell rock , classical or punk

Not only that - but if you go into the aformentioned shop to buy the shirt, do you say well I'm going to buy that £15 shirt off you but I'm only going to give you £10 for it, followed by a trip to the supermarket where you offer £1 for a £1.20 loaf of bread and so on...

The last two bids were obviously snipes. Maybe the winner just put in a big bid and got caught out.

No better start than clearing out the oldies to free up some finances....well done sir
