Don't know mate! i guess it's hold on to your hat and wait and see! I nearly had a bid on the Insights myself as it sounds like it might just be bit better than mine!! That reminds me I have got to learn how to put sound bites on as that Insights is still not on refosoul player but I think i need a digital deck and I'm still in the dark ages belt drive, twin cassette decks etc you get the picture!! Always a tricky one to find, and you never saw many about .... but never a £950 record, or have I missed something.

I'm not at all surprised that we see patterns like these, where records percieved as rare fetch less than things folk say are more common, because it's never been about rarity, but like almost everything else it is about fashion trends and the demand they create. Latin flavoured N/S has grown in popularity steadily where now it gives almost any other style a run for its money dance floor wise. I half jokingly once said on the mic " If BobbyValentin is the people's champion of Latin, then Hector Rivera is the Big Daddy"

Personally I think there's maybe 30 B Valentins for every Hector (talking about genuine Barry copies not the Horaces or more recent release with the brilliant inst on the flip) but the price doesn't reflect that because B.V. is one of the type of sounds that people buy and keep forever ( maybe at a grand it'll encourage more folk to part with theirs?)

In the Stafford era you'd see B.V.'s in every sales box and all my friends had one, I remember buying 3 copies one nite, so I agree with £300-400, and maybe 700-1000 for Hector? ( Hector was originally one of Ady C.'s wasn't it ? got it on a live tape somewhere)

On the subject of odd prices - one on ebay at the moment, Bessie Banks "Dont You Worry Baby", seems last few years this has struggled to reach £150-200, currently this one is £360 and it's the more common issue, why ?

bessie banks the issue has both sides promo double sided so maybe the reason.

Really...not doubting your word as it is a large scene, but oddly enough I am kinda the opposite as I can recall seeing more HectorR for sale than BV during the 8T's! BV was a steady £40/£60, whilst HR was £30!

It's a funny old scene!

Spot on pal, would they be saying the same if Tom Jones or Duddy did a version? I want the real thing.

Its a tough one to find but not impossible, me thinks this crazy price will bring a few out of the woodwork. Who was bidding, two or a few? Must have more money than sense some. I bet if one went through ebay this week it wouldn't fetch half what it got on JM's.

I find John Manships auction site is just for people with just too much money, and foreigners, and Japanese collectors - some stuff he puts on their isnt even that rare!

Few years back he had AN ISSUE of LaVern Baker - Wrapped tied and tangeled (Brunswick) ended up going for £360 quid!! EX copy. I paid £120 for a MINT UNPLAYED DEMO, about 2 months later on ebay. A year later he had another issue copy in an it was on set sale at about £200- Dont get me wrong i like John Manship, i buy lots off him, and he is really fair with trading stuff in too. But sometimes he just tries his luck with some titles - cant blame the bloke he runs a business, but to go by his prices (especially auction ones) is nowhere near a true value of what a 45 will go for "in the real world" BTW Vampi Soul re issued Bobby Valentin on a Fania re issue couple of years back. Looks the part, and sound quality is spot on too! (maybe the better option for some?)

£500 is probably it's money Chalks

Same with Hector Rivera.

Though as I've said before, any good quality latin boogaloo stuff is hard to find.

Even stuff that's not well known can fetch 3 figures if it's good, so stands to reason that a such an instant killer boogaloo track that has crossed over onto the Northern Scene has fetched so much.

My only gripe is having to put up with Mick H calling it Salsa.

Bet that cnut eats mincemeat every day :lol::yes:

Lean mince tho, not chav smart price grissle.

LF get too much of a bad knocking IMO (their version of HR tho' is not so hot). Dave Thorley help me out.

I've stated before on here, I would love to see them perform these tracks live in a small hot sweaty club, along with plenty of other latin tracks, including their own material if they do it.

I imagine they would be a great act for one of the weekenders.....but I don't want to hear it played out at a club instead of Bobby Valentin.

If the Commitments, or a similar style Soul tribute band released a version on something like 'This is my rainy day' would it be played out rather than the Parliaments cus it's cheap and available?

I think (or rather hope) not.....

Yeh the one i paid a tenner for in the grot at stafford laugh.gif

I was stitched up ... paid £30 for mine early 90's

I am still coming to terms with Mace's aversion to mince meat ... never struck me as a man that would refuse food, of any description ... except of course salad. biggrin.gif

Yes it was quite a surprising result but surely we're not going to churn the old "its not worth that much!" argument again are we? Someone paid 950 quid ERGO that's what its worth - a straightforward product of the supply & demand equation. We should be glad about this - NS vinyl has outperformed everything bar gold over the last few years.

Cheers.....Pete

I saw a programme recently that compared % growth of gold/property and vintage wine over the last 30 years or so, and vintage wine came out on top (though gold had a higher increase in the most recent years)

Should imagine results would be different if Rare Records (not just soul) were to be included in the survey over the same period?

there's no wonder people are turning to boots and retro remakes of records when lunatics pay this kind of money for something that I would dare bet 98% of collectors or dealers would rate at less than half, half at most the price this one fetched. Why should we be glad when records are fetching daft sums of money. No where else other than JM would you get this kind of price? Why is this? Next thing every dealer begins to take these prices as the guide and record collecting will soon be a pastime for those with more money than sense.

Nothing to worry about and wasn't aimed at you personally, deleted a few, the one I replied to and what Mace said I thought was in keeping with the topic and was referring to the difference between the original and the retro release someone was referring to, the off topic then followed on.

Why should we be glad Pete? Unless you're sitting on a pile of rare stuff that you want to offload and clean up, mere mortal small scale collectors like me are just pushed further and further away. Different planet & all that:(

100% agree with you on this one, the other logic is just justiification to throw silly money without regard and its always for the same 100 or so records, hence the continuation of same old same old when it comes to the supposedly different sounds even, great if you can do it,even greater if you do it when I am selling them, but otherwise its a very warped logic to justify, suppose it has its paralllels in art where some collectors will pay anything to get the most wanted, I always hoped for a little more thought, individualism when it comes to soul collectors, maybe a bit too aspirational.

Anyway back to BV, its sh*t so no matter of how much it goes for its not worth it, you know I'm right, a large case of Larry the Lamb growing up syndrome by the sounds of it to me..............

Jocko, whilst I tend to agree with most of you posts, I gotta say, you really are talking out of your arse with this statement.

It's a fantastic slab of boogaloo and you know it.

Regardless of wether you like latin or not, there is no way you can describe it as sh*t.

It always rocks the dancefloor.

Will have to tell Mikey Collins to give you a much deserved slap next time he sees you

I am full of mischief this morning as you will see if you read some other posts, especially 80's thread and just looking for some attention, although not sure what would be worse, a big hug from Mikey or a slap, both tend to be bone breaking! Not seem him for a while actually so pass him on my very best if you do put a contract out on me  .

I wouldn't say I don't like Latin, I don't like lots of in one go and the stuff I don't like I hate, which for some reason BV always slotted into that category, not sure why as it was by no means the worst of some of the criminal records of the 80's, a bit like Bob & Fred really, where I seem to be in a minority of 1 of truly hating that record!

Hope you are well, think I am just going mad as not been out in nearly a month!

Totally ridiculous i know, but Mr Manship is a very shrewd man.

He proved that with the Price Guides! No USA dealer was going to UNDERCUT him!

You have got to take your hat off to him, he is playing this game for all it's worth!!!!!!!!!!
