Stevesilktulip Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 The Renaissance is about to reach new heights/ depths ( delete as appropriate ) with the forthcoming remake of this much loved tv series which spawned a Northern monster, only mentioned in whispers in dark corridors. In fairness, at the time soul music was still pretty much in its infancy and nobody really knew anything about it.( check out the Soul Book ); I recall reading somewhere that Rock Your Baby was one of Dave Godins all time favourite albums; I would have agreed with him, many people would. I believe there were 2 versions of Hawaii 5 0 around at the time but the b side of mine * was Ironside, written by one Quincy Jones who I believe still has some credibility in Black Music circles. If you watch an episode of Ironside the incidental music is quite funky ( with a small f ) and soulful ( small s ). One must also not forget that the tv series was enormously popular at the time, in no small part, due to the highly catchy theme music which didn't ask to be played on the Northern scene and judged on its own terms is probably one of the best tv theme tunes of them all. I recall a friend of mine from the next generation of Northern Soulies telling me that they were subjected to Joe 90. Anyone care to make a defence of that one ? * I should perhaps point out at this point that I was 12 at the time.
Soul-slider Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 Well, to add more fuel to your thread, the vocal was cut by a black man (Sammy Davis Jr.) so there must have been some soul (small s) in the tune surely.
Pete S Posted August 11, 2010 Posted August 11, 2010 I don't think a lot of people cared back then, another few records which have no soul content whatsoever but were still huge records (now forgotten) were "Dizzy" by the lester lanin orchestra and "Take a letter Maria" by Boots Randolph. And what about "Zola"? Crazy instrumentals which made for great acrobatic dancing.

Without too much embarassment I'll confess that back then, I went and bought the Sammy Davis Jr album, for the vocal track it's called "You can count on me" alan

Still don't mind the latter two now.
Guest Phoenix8049 Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 I never really classed Ventures - Hawaii Five-0 as a northern soul or soul record. To me it's just a great sixties pop instrumental. Stu.
