Guest miff Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I went to both and beleve me Cleethorpes was better in every way People seem to forget that Cleethorpes carried on past the pier right on up to the 80s, all be as an alldayer at the winter Gardens. It was run by the same people with the same DJs. and as such it must be one of the longest runing venues in England. and is still going

Like it says in the interview, you could walk from the Wintergardens to the Pier and hear the stomping long before you got there and then feel the pier vibrating as you walked along it. The music was, as he says, "a melting pot" of what was played at the Casino and the Mecca....new release followed 60s record and we just accepted it and enjoyed it. The only misleading thing about the interview is that it gives the impression that Cleggy took its lead from the other two, whereas in fact a lot of records were first broken there. After all, one of the DJs worked at Soul Bowl....he had access to the imports first! Cleethorpes influenced the music policy of many a venue down the Eastern side of the country and the musical taste of a hell of a lot soulies.

Mark B Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 i went to both and of the two i would say cleethorpes was the better used to love that walk along th efront to the wintergardens prefered the winter gardens as a venue to the pier though, only problem wa sin 70's it took a long time to get there from manchester as no motorway after leeds, think i prefered cleethorpes because i was a blackpool mecca fan. mark

Guest lagerlout Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 wigan v cleggy i attended both venues and found wigan great especially mr Ms but cleethorpes wintergardens was an excellent place to visit. and the test of time as proved this with the wintergardens still going strong. i attended the last week-ender at the beachcomber and stay at the same guest house every year. the owners informed me that the owners of the wintergardens are thinking of selling it to property developers. if this happens this will be the last real northern soul venue from our past to go. what an end to a to a great place with so much soul history
Guest miff Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 All over the north, soulies will be sticking pins in wax dolls of you and Miff though Nurse, NURSE ! link Yea you are probley right Ime not knocking Wigan as i did enjoy my nights there We mainly went to the Oldies nighters on the friday night Then on to a nighter somewhere else Finish off at the dayer at Cleethorpes, Just found Wigan not to be the frendlist venue to go to and it was a shit hole. Three of us used to go regulerly in a Austin Allegro Come rain sun or snow, Me a lad called Mark Smith ,Shep & Andy Fersman, Also Seems to me that the people from that area didnt seem to travel very far from home Now thats opened up the floodgates i'll get a right slaging off now

Guest Soultown andy Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Went to cleethorpes twice but did,nt rate it not a patch on wigan for me,the fact that wigan was on the door step and im a stomper lover probably had a lot to do with it.Miff mentions its longevity twisted wheel still running every month and going great guns,i know it stopped for years but nice to see the real home of northern going well again.
Tomangoes Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Dave, you want to try and get a copy of 'so is the sun' with the cleethorpes anniversary sticker on it. Cleggy - vs- Wigan, depends what you judge on. Wigan had more folks through the gates, but played more pop music. Every venue was important, and these two very important. Where is volume 2 and 3 of the cleethorpes story CD, cant be due to lack of tunes. Ed

Used to swear that everytime a stomper was played on the pier, that floor would go through and we would end up in the sea.... Force ten gale blowing as we walked down to the hall, with a full circle skirt on was rather refreshing........ Mary Chapman, Chris Dalton, Rick Scott, Rick Todd....... I can remember Soul Sam "breaking" Casanova by coffee at the gardens in the early 8ts and a few weeks later it was in the charts. I was under the impression that the contracters whom have the job of redesigning the gardens were going to leave the main ballroom and downstairs complete, instead of just knocking it all down... I hope that they haven't changed their minds again.

sister dawn Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Presume ya mean the like sof black nasty and the skull snaps, stanley woodruff etc etc... And the mighty crow, very very, funky for its time, never used to like it much, but when married my hubby that was his fave back then and it sort of grows on ya after bout twenty odd years when "the boxes" come out for an airing and is one of the first on the decks.... Spooky and Sues "I've got the need" is the epitomy of the Cleethorpes sound for me.... Remember gettin on the coach at the Barbican in Lincoln and picking up peeps in the villages on the way to Cleethorpes.... Talk of the north........ Classics.... When we go to the all dayers at the gardens its still got that buzz for me... and takes me back to when I was a fifteen year old again.... Hope it stays and they don't pull it down, its got too many of my memories in there......

The Bags ball on a wensday night is famous around the country Some goods act have been on over the years, it caters for all types from Punk Bands to Afternoon tea dances all down to good open minded management Long may it live and never die it would be a massive loss to Cleethorpes and its resedents young and old.
Guest Awake 502 Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Where is volume 2 and 3 of the cleethorpes story CD, cant be due to lack of tunes. Ed link Probably because when compiling cd's it made more financial sense to call them Wigan sounds Think back to some of the tracks introduced by Poke, Manship, Frank, Ginger, Sam etc that were first played on the east coast. Is it any coincidence that Searling's best records were played 1978-1981 after Poke had stopped d.j'ing at the niters ??? Cleethorpes was always my favourite venue, music was second to none.....
