boba Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Cytations: Darling You Do / Suddenly (Granjun) VG+ bids Stunning early '70s group dancer from Washington DC that rarely turns up (it's also highly prized by sweet soul collectors for the flip). Bids starting at £600. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ons_darling.mp3 very rare...

The Ambassadors: Soul Summit LP (Arctic) EX disc / strong VG+ sleeve £175 Honey & the Bees: Love LP (Josie) M- disc / EX sleeve £150 A pair of tough Philadelphia LP's to kick off with before getting on to the 45s. From the amazing sleeves to the musical perfection contained within, these are flawless releases. Aged In Harmony: Trust Me / Dance Awhile (Mor-Tones) EX £250 Trust Me is inspired downtempo soul, loved by everyone from the New York hip-hop lot to the Yarmouth steppers crowd. For this reason the flip is often overlooked, but it's a surprisingly great mid-'70s funk roller. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ony_trustme.mp3 Marion Black: Who Knows (Capsoul) VG WOL £6 Bargain copy of outstanding R'n'B-edged club spin, used but plays fine. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ck_whoknows.mp3 Carmen: Time to Move (Presents) EX £35 Infectious early '80s boogie from Detroit. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...carmen_time.mp3 Chain Reaction: Nurse Your Nerves / Lady In Red (Oshowleo) EX £35 Underrated west coast double-sider. I don't understand why this record isn't held in higher esteem, because the soul side really is absolutely magnificent, and the rowdy funk effort thumps too. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...on_oshowleo.mp3 Collaboration: Forgive Me / Where Is Love (Mohawk) VG/+ £75 Two midtempo group crossover tracks from New York. Not sure if this has done the rounds at modern/steppers events yet, but it deserves to. Classy stuff arranged by Richard Tee - Forgive Me has a nice breakdown, but both tracks are solid. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...n_forgiveme.mp3 Creations: I've Got To Find Her (Globe) EX stock copy £15 One of the best ways to spend £20 and have change for a pint and a bag of chips. A masterful, yearning performance. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...tions_globe.mp3 Crisi feat. Bryant Wilson: Blackfoot / Get On Down (Effie) VG £15 Obscure Detroit funk from Woody Wilson (of Donald Austin fame). Blackfoot is a cool & mellow side that reminds me of Young Holt's great Hey Pancho. Get On Down is VG- (check the clip), otherwise I'm sure this would sell for a fair bit more. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...i_blackfoot.mp3 Cytations: Darling You Do / Suddenly (Granjun) VG+ bids Stunning early '70s group dancer from Washington DC that rarely turns up (it's also highly prized by sweet soul collectors for the flip). Bids starting at £600. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ons_darling.mp3 The Deceptions: Of All The Hearts / People (Brooks) strong VG+ warp nap £200 Top quality release from Virginia with a truly exceptional sweet-with-a-beat side (the killer version of the song also done by Black & Blue on Game), plus a heavy duty psych-funk spin on the back. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ions_brooks.mp3 Destiny In Time: Visions / Dance (Carlisle) EX £30 Obscure funky modern with club potential. Hear a touch of the other side too. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...stinyintime.mp3 Renaldo Domino: I'll Get You Back / Two Years, Four Days (Sincere/Numero) M- £5 On a list with some top ranking "ballad-with-a-beat" type tunes, the previously unreleased creeper I'll Get You Back stands shoulder to shoulder with most contenders. Highly recommended. (Northern flip, also unreleased - hear both) SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ino_sincere.mp3 Kittie Doswell: Just A Face In The Crowd (HES) VG+ £350 This moody crossover tour de force is a tough L.A. release with heavy bass and cold, swinging personality all of its own. Currently in strong demand, and it's not difficult to work out why. Two quiet clicks shortly before the end of the track (check the clip) and it also has a bit of a dish, but it's on the other side and doesn't affect play - without these two minor flaws I'd be asking £100 more. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ttiedoswell.mp3 Morris Dow & Eastern Sound: Night Rider / Black Child (Dee Dee) EX slight lift nap £60 Funky Baltimore oddity with considerable charm. A new one to me; recently purchased by DJs like Soul Sam and Karl Heard. Hear a bit of the unusual jazzy flip in the audio as well. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...sdow_deedee.mp3 Elements: Prove It / Fever (Saru) solid EX £15 '70s group version of Fever plus an uptempo crossover track, both featuring the usual cast of Cleveland legends expected on this label (Bobby Massey, Bobby Dukes etc). SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ments_fever.mp3 Lee Fields: Take Me Back / Tyra's Song (Angle 3) VG+ £150 Huge Butch spin in recent years, complete with the great (some say better) talkover side which also makes an excellent play-out track. Plays fine, but has a couple of small label scratches on one side only. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...fields_take.mp3 Jesse Green: Keep On Dancing / Gimmi Gimmi Your Love (Eagle Sound) strong VG+ slight warp NAP £75 Really obscure small-hole UK release featuring two unknown modern/boogie dancers. SOUNDCLIP Keep On Dancing: https://www.concourse...esound_keep.mp3 SOUNDCLIP Gimmi Gimmi Your Loving: https://www.concourse...esound_keep.mp3 Pete Hartfield: Mighty Man (Baby) solid VG+ £75 Rollocking great barrelhouse of a mod club spin for Mik Parry and others. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...d_mightyman.mp3 Joe Hinton: Got You On My Mind (Back Beat) solid VG+ £40 Undeniable heartmelting crossover, that moves along powerfully. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...nton_gotyou.mp3 Hot Chocolate: Good For The Gander (Co Co) VG+ very slight dish £10 Raw funk blast from Lou Ragland & co. (the soul side has a scratch near the start causing quiet clicks - hear in clip). SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...late_gander.mp3 Arthur Jackson: The Philosophy of Chopp Funk / Part 2 (A.J.'s) EX £75 Chopp Funk is indeed the order of the day on this intricate L.A. disc. Part 2 is the side. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ckson_chopp.mp3 Eddie Jay & Ray: Keep Smilin' / instrumental (PPL) EX £40 Uplifting modern soul out of Hollywood CA. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse..._keepsmilin.mp3 Benny Johnson & his Soul Serenaders: Fresh Out Of Teardrops (Tarx) EX £40 Big-voiced 100mph '60s stormer with broad appeal. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ohnson_tarx.mp3 Geraldine Jones: Baby I'm Leaving You (Sta-Set) VG+ £30 Female '60s mover, could be another for the mod clubs. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ejones_baby.mp3 Jean Knight: Love (Tribe) VG+ white demo £20 Mean and moody popcorn with that absorbing minor key sound. X's on other side. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...knight_love.mp3 The Marlboro Men: (Ride On) Iron Horse / Never Will You Meet A Guy Like Me (Nite Beat) solid EX £200 Iron Horse is a gritty funk steam-train that thunders along laudably and rarely leaves my play box (nice ballad flip too). SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...n_ironhorse.mp3 Lee Moses: Reach Out, I'll Be There / Day Tripper (Musicor) drill hole & slight warp NAP EX £200 Break-laden instrumental with the machine gun drums placed drastically high in the mix. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...moses_reach.mp3 Tony Northern: Hand Down The Law / Covered With Money (Ariel) EX £50 Funky, uplifting dancer with banging drums and a whopping breakdown. Check the northern flip too. Nice green and yellow "swirl" label, first time I've had one like this (in my experience it more commonly comes with a plain orangey-yellow design). There's also a hint of a dish, obviously not affecting play. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...thern_ariel.mp3 Ollie Nightingale: I'll Take Care Of You (Memphis) M- slight lift nap £20 The moody side of crossover at its best, and a big tune for my colleague Steve Cato at Soul or Nothing in Manchester recently. Normally comes with another track on the flip, but a decent price here for this demo copy (same song both sides). SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ingale_care.mp3 95th Congress: The World Today / Fiddle De De (Sussex) VG £60 Bristling, full throttle zulu funk with mad breaks and soaring horns. A favourite of mine since Dante Carfagna put me onto it some years ago, and another that's often in my DJ box. Looks VG but plays fine, hence bargain price (don't be deceived by the label - this has proven to be quite tricky and goes for $150-$300+ on auction). Good track on the other side too. Slight dish nap & promo date stamp on label. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...5thcongress.mp3 Page One: Thank Goodness Got a Good Woman / What A Messed Up Situation (Norfolk International) EX bids This male group double-sider out of Virginia flies well under the radar, carrying both a banging hip-hop style downtempo thumper with fat production and a faster-paced morose dancer of equal merits in its payload. Thank Goodness side has the lyrics printed on the label! It's the only copy I've ever come across (and is far superior to the group's more common release), so bids start at £250. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ads/pageone.mp3 The Right Combination: I'm Still In Love With You (Gold Mine) M- WOL £12 Excellent disco spin. I think part 2 is by far the best side so I've put that first in the clip, followed by the main vocal. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...combination.mp3 Seeds Of Life: The Whole Thing / Part 2 (Sedgrick) EX £100 Rolling Chicago street funk with wicked horns. It's considerably better than other entries into the "whole thing" craze/genre - pitch it up a bit for a dancefloor winner. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse..._wholething.mp3 Sins of Satan: Mother Nature / (Trying to get back to) Natural Feelings (Ecology) strong VG+ £125 Leftfield '70s obscurity from Michigan: Mother Nature is a plea for the planet set to a lovely midtempo crossover backing, and the flip's wild funk ride is on a similar eco-tip. Really faint ringwear on one side only. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...tan_ecology.mp3 The Soul Duo: Can't Nobody Love Me / Part II (Shiptown) EX £30 A Virginia collectable: this funky soul tune with a break normally comes with a duff Christmas song on the flip, and this is the first time I've ever seen it with part 2 instead. It's pretty cool too - overdubbed crowd noise, weird arrangement etc. I've therefore clipped it first, followed by the normal side. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...uo_shiptown.mp3 Soul Pushers: With A Broken Heart (Ambush) VG+ £20 Quality sweet soul from Richmond, with crisp drums. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...hers_ambush.mp3 Sounds of the City: Stuff & Thangs (Sounds of the City) VG+ £150 This dark and brutal rhythmic assault from uptown N.Y. should render funk dancefloors a sweaty mess. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...stuffthangs.mp3 T.A.C. Movement: Wishes / T.A.C. Movement (T.P.P.) VG- £75 A total obscurity here: beautiful sweet soul out of Birmingham, Alabama, with very odd instrumental funk on the flip. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...tacmovement.mp3 The New Testament: I Feel The Spirit / Show Me The Way (Penguin) dish EX £30 Rare gospel soul stepper out of Chicago, that seems to have had a few modern spins. Nice soulful flip too, hear both in the clip. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...ent_penguin.mp3 Ultimate Ovation: Hello Baby / Chameleon Man (Aquarius) £100 Hello Baby has a hip-hop feel with much character and is a classic amongst those collectors into the rough-edged, amateurish end of obscure group soul. I've also included a bit of the uptempo flip in the soundclip because apparently some people love it, though it's beyond me as to why. This label has one of best label designs of all time (perhaps the absolute greatest in fact). Due to scuffs, some pops etc I'd have to call it VG+, but if you know what kind of state these Aquarius releases normally turn up in then you'll be aware that this is a solid copy! SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...n_hellobaby.mp3 Vanguards & The Lady: All The Women I've Wanted / Blue Star Raising (Shirley) EX £125 Fine midtempo crossover rarity from this prolific Indiana group. The flip is a totally out-there ballad-with-a-beat, but be warned, it plumbs new depths of darkness and is absolutely not for the faint hearted. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...allthewomen.mp3 Wheeler Five-O feat. Deborah Dobson: I'll Never Say Goodbye (Wheeler) EX warp nap £40 Floaty intro leads into a shuffling female-led funky soul mover. SOUNDCLIP: https://www.concourse...heelerfiveo.mp3 Begsbie is looking for a Lee Fields:thumbsup: atb John.
George M Posted August 4, 2010 Author Posted August 4, 2010 Begsbie is looking for a Lee Fields:thumbsup: atb John. Lee Fields is sold now.
Liljimmycrank Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 That Morris Dow is a great record, and likely to go places now in Karl's posession
George M Posted August 8, 2010 Author Posted August 8, 2010 Updated with the solds removed, and a few reductions.
