Aged In Harmony: Trust Me / Dance Awhile (Mor-Tones) EX £250

Trust Me is inspired downtempo soul, loved by everyone from the New York hip-hop lot to the Yarmouth steppers crowd. For this reason the flip is often overlooked, but it's a surprisingly great mid-'70s funk roller.

Underrated west coast double-sider. I don't understand why this record isn't held in higher esteem, because the soul side really is absolutely magnificent, and the rowdy funk effort thumps too.

Collaboration: Forgive Me / Where Is Love (Mohawk) VG/+ £75

Two midtempo group crossover tracks from New York. Not sure if this has done the rounds at modern/steppers events yet, but it deserves to. Classy stuff arranged by Richard Tee - Forgive Me has a nice breakdown, but both tracks are solid.

Crisi feat. Bryant Wilson: Blackfoot / Get On Down (Effie) VG £15

Obscure Detroit funk from Woody Wilson (of Donald Austin fame). Blackfoot is a cool & mellow side that reminds me of Young Holt's great Hey Pancho. Get On Down is VG- (check the clip), otherwise I'm sure this would sell for a fair bit more.

Renaldo Domino: I'll Get You Back / Two Years, Four Days (Sincere/Numero) M- £5

On a list with some top ranking "ballad-with-a-beat" type tunes, the previously unreleased creeper I'll Get You Back stands shoulder to shoulder with most contenders. Highly recommended. (Northern flip, also unreleased - hear both)

Kittie Doswell: Just A Face In The Crowd (HES) VG+ £350

This moody crossover tour de force is a tough L.A. release with heavy bass and cold, swinging personality all of its own. Currently in strong demand, and it's not difficult to work out why. Two quiet clicks shortly before the end of the track (check the clip) and it also has a bit of a dish, but it's on the other side and doesn't affect play - without these two minor flaws I'd be asking £100 more.

Morris Dow & Eastern Sound: Night Rider / Black Child (Dee Dee) EX slight lift nap £60

Funky Baltimore oddity with considerable charm. A new one to me; recently purchased by DJs like Soul Sam and Karl Heard. Hear a bit of the unusual jazzy flip in the audio as well.

Funky, uplifting dancer with banging drums and a whopping breakdown. Check the northern flip too. Nice green and yellow "swirl" label, first time I've had one like this (in my experience it more commonly comes with a plain orangey-yellow design). There's also a hint of a dish, obviously not affecting play.

The moody side of crossover at its best, and a big tune for my colleague Steve Cato at Soul or Nothing in Manchester recently. Normally comes with another track on the flip, but a decent price here for this demo copy (same song both sides).

95^th Congress: The World Today / Fiddle De De (Sussex) VG £60

Bristling, full throttle zulu funk with mad breaks and soaring horns. A favourite of mine since Dante Carfagna put me onto it some years ago, and another that's often in my DJ box. Looks VG but plays fine, hence bargain price (don't be deceived by the label - this has proven to be quite tricky and goes for $150-$300+ on auction). Good track on the other side too. Slight dish nap & promo date stamp on label.

Page One: Thank Goodness Got a Good Woman / What A Messed Up Situation (Norfolk International) EX bids

This male group double-sider out of Virginia flies well under the radar, carrying both a banging hip-hop style downtempo thumper with fat production and a faster-paced morose dancer of equal merits in its payload. Thank Goodness side has the lyrics printed on the label! It's the only copy I've ever come across (and is far superior to the group's more common release), so bids start at £250.

Rolling Chicago street funk with wicked horns. It's considerably better than other entries into the "whole thing" craze/genre - pitch it up a bit for a dancefloor winner.

Sins of Satan: Mother Nature / (Trying to get back to) Natural Feelings (Ecology) strong VG+ £125

Leftfield '70s obscurity from Michigan: Mother Nature is a plea for the planet set to a lovely midtempo crossover backing, and the flip's wild funk ride is on a similar eco-tip. Really faint ringwear on one side only.

The Soul Duo: Can't Nobody Love Me / Part II (Shiptown) EX £30

A Virginia collectable: this funky soul tune with a break normally comes with a duff Christmas song on the flip, and this is the first time I've ever seen it with part 2 instead. It's pretty cool too - overdubbed crowd noise, weird arrangement etc. I've therefore clipped it first, followed by the normal side.

Ultimate Ovation: Hello Baby / Chameleon Man (Aquarius) £100

Hello Baby has a hip-hop feel with much character and is a classic amongst those collectors into the rough-edged, amateurish end of obscure group soul. I've also included a bit of the uptempo flip in the soundclip because apparently some people love it, though it's beyond me as to why. This label has one of best label designs of all time (perhaps the absolute greatest in fact). Due to scuffs, some pops etc I'd have to call it VG+, but if you know what kind of state these Aquarius releases normally turn up in then you'll be aware that this is a solid copy!

Vanguards & The Lady: All The Women I've Wanted / Blue Star Raising (Shirley) EX £125

Fine midtempo crossover rarity from this prolific Indiana group. The flip is a totally out-there ballad-with-a-beat, but be warned, it plumbs new depths of darkness and is absolutely not for the faint hearted.
