yes, 1983 according to the label. Another goodie is Family of Eve - Please be truthful. Doesn't state any year on the label but the flipside sounds very 80s IMO.

The Reachers doesn't have any dates on the label as far as I know. I'm sure it was around from even before the early 'modern scene' days: maybe even a late Mecca record.

I'm afraid I'm guilty of not really buying any 80s soul since the 1980s themselves. All the way through until about 88-9 I used to buy at least a couple of new releases every week from Soul Bowl, Record Corner and later Voices. From about that point on either the quality dropped or I just became jaded with the sound.

However I would love to hear more rare 80s that I haven't heard before. The problem is where to hear it. I've heard Butch play a couple of amazing 80s-sounding things at his non-allnighter gigs in the last few years and I'm sure it's an under-tapped resource of good soul music. I'm afraid I don't personally have the courage to buy obscure 80s things without having heard them first.

The quality of soul output in 80's compared to 60's and 70's, and then 90's, 2000's was very poor, and whilst there were some great tunes, they were few and very far between amongst the mostly dreadful synth productions that the decade was obsessed with. Easily the worst decade for real soul during the past 50 years.....

The 80's....no proper soul music and Thatcher.... thank God for Stafford and the 100 Club.....

You're right, no date on the label. I wrote 1983 on the sleeve but can't remember where I got that info from. I think either from the delta no or didn't one of the recently auctioned test presses have a date on the label?

the reachers is from 1977 according to the delta stamp. while from 83 onward the synth ran riot in most productions some still sound good to these ears but lots havent stood the test of time. i will always have a soft spot for willie collins, melisa morgan, atlantic starr `silver shadow etc

Gulp, Hardly ever comes up for sale & when it does it normally ends up in Europe in the hands of a Boogie collector. Would guess at about £500 but I'd want a hell of a lot more than that for mine.

Can't think of anyone else in the UK with a copy now apart from me.

Will be giving it a spin tomorrow night on Andy Jacksons Infiniti show on boundarysound if you wanna hear it.

Well i have and i know of another, their are a lot of collecters who never go to soul events anymore.

Following on from the Budweiser theme the Hotliners – Cold Hearted is a great dance tune.

This was the decade of the drum box and it did detract the soul element for quite a few tunes and IMO the better quality soul releases were either mid-tempo or ballads. The major labels IMO were also getting a bit samey and smaltzy, with the worst being Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson - Tonight I Celebrate My Love.

The heart of Southern soul was still beating after lying dormant during the disco years with Malaco, Ichiban and other independents that Soul Bowl, Record corner, later Voices picked up and the UK based labels releasing/leasing new USD product throughout the 80's need to be given credit too.:D

All great tunes listed so far, and I'm sure we could all list a good few more, but the majority of great 80's soul tunes were released '80, '81 and '82, and still held the production qualtities of the '70's. Compared to the soul output from any other decade it will always be a very small list.

I thought that there some really good tunes released in the 80s but agree that the use/overuse of the synth spoilt some tracks - Rufus Hunter is a great tune but slightly spoilt by the drum machine instead of real drums - the Billy Always and the Willie Hobbs tunes are among my all time favourites - I picked most of the following up from Record Corner late 80s - lots of great albums around then too. At work so these are off the top of my head which is a wee bit fuzzy this early in the day.

I think it would be interesting to hear more about hidden post 84 gems, such as The Fabulous Playmates and PJ City, which were both released in 1986. They retain that certain aesthetic, which made some of the great early 80's records mentioned above sound great. Here is one mid-pacer from 86, which I like:

That thread was about the venues of the 80s and is completely irrelevant to this topic. Dredging it up would dereail this thread horribly so please don't.

Russ was asking which, if any, 80s records could become popular niter sounds today. Records made in the 1980s. While there are many such as Collins & Collins, Timeless Legend and so on which have already crossed over to the northern allnighter scene they did so when they were fresh-sounding and practically new releases.

The last few years have seen practically no 80s recorded soul records become big 'niter sounds with the exception of long-standing rarities like King Moses, Doc Peabody and Tolbert, which collectors were chasing for years anyway. Trophy records like those tend to get played out by deejays whenever acquired, regardless of their vintage.

Lots of people have mentioned records they themselves bought and listened to in the 80s. I did that and then edited the list out because I didn't feel upon reflection that it answered the question. I just can't see many the run-of-the-mill Soul Bowl-listed indies ever becoming 'rare soul' in a club context again, no matter how good some of them are as records.

I guess the kind of thing Russ was looking for were tips on obscurities and rarities which were not generally known at the time of their release, but which could now become popular if played by the right deejay. PJ City as mentioned by Demotron is a really good example and there must be at least a few dozen more. Problem is that those who would possess such knowledge are generally unwilling to share it on a public forum and who can blame them?

I'm sure Simon Murray, Karl Marthon and others have more than a few such sounds already under wraps and primed to take club dancefloors by storm.

1. For those who embraced the rare modern scene and intergrated the new release major label artists at that time, it was never barren throughout that period.

2. As for the next 80's produced "rare roof lifter" - then there's nobody more scripted for that role than the current crop of jocks within that genre to produce. thumbsup.gif.
