I think the practicalities of the female dark trouser wearer are just and if I were a bird, I'd probably be the same.  It's a shame though as the full skirt and indeed all skirts (on women) are far more feminine than trousers.

Sorry but that is so sexist!

Thinking back to 71/72, our scene evolved from the mods, through the wheel, and smart dress was the norm.

Levi Staprest pants, black button down shirt or Ben Sherman, brogues, black blazer, red or black socks, crombie, etc.

The Mecca kept the standard high, but Wigan, for personal comforts sake, did start to drag it down a bit.

Now, I agree that anything goes but still look at the shoes. I wear Loakes, which are imitation "Royals" but a classic shoe, but my son wears trainers.

I have noticed a trend of suits amongst the lads, which I personally think looks great.

Yes we were distinguishable by our clothes, but not as much nowadays.

We are a cut above musically, I feel we should get our identity back!

Don't actually remember string vests, but at one time a lot of people wore either a vest or T shirt with a sort of comic strip type of design that said "Dragonette" or something similar.  I actually preferred the bowling shirt look with my 40" bags.

at least be positive then. i cant understand why you want to 'narrow' the scene even more.

you sound like an old fashioned office boss saying things like 'birds look better in skirts'

As previously stated, the beauty of ns scene means you can wear what you want. A uniform dress code these days would be a bit ridiculous. The discussions of the changing styles over the year's however is I think an interesting topic.

Live and let live

Its a struggle to get decent brogues anyway, Dexters have stopped production and Florsheim seem to be the last manufacturer of a decent oxblood wing tip. If they stop production it will be the end of the civilised world as we know it. I'll have to start wearing slip on shoes.

Or get the eight pairs in my cupboard re-soled

Sorry but I have to disagree, I'm with Kenny on this one. Ban kilts.

That sounds sensible (apart from the cider spills  )

Would anyone concede at least that there was a sort of clothing fashion on the NS scene?

What about jogging bottoms and moccasins in the eighties, lol.  With white socks!

link

there stiil is for men tends to be button down shirts, trousers either smart or casual and as jeans are as expensive as a good pair of trousers a lot wear them also the majority do wear leather soul shoes, i always say leather soles for going out and rubber souls or trainer types for casual (pub etc), you must remember that those fashions were in the 70,s when we all followed fashion of some sort, now most people like to look smart and feel comfortable, hence no real fashion trends, also who wants to look a t%"t in their 40's/50's in baggy trousers and a vest with badges on not me.

I went to Scotland once and the only person wearing a kilt that I saw was a South African. Its all a big con for tourists, like tins of shortbread, bagpusses and potato pancakes. No man in his right mind would actually wear a checked skirt with a handbag hanging over his groin and a fruit knife tucked in his sock out of choice, surely?

Who are Kenny? The Scottish? I think you've lost me. They may be a bit odd but surely they're not that bad? It can't be true, they don't smell of garlic for a start and they don't have any cheese in Scotland.

i'm not saying i want to wear one ...though i did look great in it blush.gif ..... but the banning of them is a problem i may feel the urge to wear one .

and anyway if people can wear hawaiian shirts (which are almost the height in bad taste) then kilts should be acceptable :D

I just got in from the Isle of Skye

I'm not very big and I'm awfully shy

The ladies shout as I go by

Donald where's your trousers.

Let the winds blow high,

Let the winds blow low,

Down the street in my kilt I go

And all the ladies say hello

Donald where's your trousers

A lady took me to a ball

And it was slippery in the hall

I was afraid that I would fall

'Cause I didn't have on my trousers

They'd like to wed me everyone

Just let them catch me if they can

You canna put the brakes on a highland man

Who doesn't like wearing trousers.

To wear the kilt is my delight,

It isn't wrong, I know it's right.

The highlanders would get afright

If they saw me in trousers.

Well I caught a cold and me nose was raw

I had no handkerchief at all

So I hiked up my kilt and I gave it a blow,

Now you can't do that with trousers.

Stuart: a better bet for wing tips might be Alden or Allen Edmonds. Proper shell cordovan (so called because the leather comes from a shell-shaped piece of the cow's hide) and still made in the USA. You can order them online from

www.allenedmonds.com

The ones you want are called MacNeil. More expensive than the ones you mention but worth every penny. You can also buy them from John Rushden shoes in London. Alden only have a couple of shops left now, but they make great shoes that unfortunately no-one seems to want to wear these days.

Florsheim make their shoes in Costa Rica now and the quality is not what it was.

Sorry if this all sounds pretentious, but shoes are important to some people...

This thread's about fashion on the Northern Soul scene and not about sexism. But I'm not sexist, honest! Check out my signature. I'm in touch with my feminine side whist still being reassuringly heterosexual blush.gif

Keb once said that the whole point of wearing baggies was to give 'one's bits' some freedom whilst dancing :P

Ah good, I'm glad that's all sorted. I think the butch dykes must refer to their masculine side on occasion.

BTW, woss with you avatar? Nice bird like you should have some dainty stilettos, or strappy sandals surely blush.gif
