Guest chorleybloke Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Ey up Dave, Spotted your name in a thread about "Evil" by the Posse & knew I'd seen that name somewhere before. Sure enough its scribbled on a record label in my box here in Perth, Western Australia alongside other scribbles "Soul Sound" and "The Kid". The label in question is a yellow Sunflower issue of Bobby Taylor's "There Are Roses Somewhere In This World". Bought it in the late 70s but can't remember where. Funny old game innit? Cheers Pete Down Under

Cheapsiderecords Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 No, I think he means Soul Galore? Basically an A5 magazine of 45's with current pricing, bootleg info, 45's for sale etc. I paid for a subscription for this as well.
soulsalmon Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Might have been abit dodgy ,but what a funny bloke(if you didnt suscribe!)

Soulsmith Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Was Dave from Manchester area? Seem to remember catching last train to Wigan with him one Friday night. Also on-board were a couple of other Mancs -"Barry Big Eyes" & a lad who used to run a clothing shhop in the town call S-- anybody fill in the missing blanks? Regards Col.

Guest Soultown andy Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Still got a copy of new soultime, siz was and is a good mate of mine, but the mag was piss poor, just like the snobs soul club he and tony just ran[soul nites over britain]not one of sizs better ideas.
Bigsoulman Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 As your last post was rather ambiguous, I'll just point out that it wasn't me. link Defo not Dave

As Ric-tic has said he was having a real nightmare at that time................... It would be a shame if Dave decided to give this site a swerve because his reputation has been damaged before he`s even had a chance to get his side of the story out. Garv.
Sweeney Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I subscribed to Soul Galore too - the story about The Jades - I'm Where It's At was worthy of the price of admission alone. I still have Issues 1-9 (how many were there in total?) and refer to them constantly. I was just sad that they stopped and am saddened to think that Dave went through such challenging times that prevented him from producing more issues of such a brilliant magazine. In the pre-chatroom era, it was a very valuable resource for finding new sounds and learning more about the folklore surrounding the soul scene. I for one would welcome Mr McCadden's continued input on this site.

Cheapsiderecords Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 With respect to the subs for the mag, nobody is having a go at Dave ( or at least I am not ), I was more disappointed the mag stopped. The reviews were great, he gave away free 45's every issue and some of his reviews were brilliantly funny. Having said that, if somebody takes my money for something and doesnt deliver I reserve the right to mention it.

Derek Pearson Posted August 4, 2005 Posted August 4, 2005 "on the same note there is also another person who uses these pages did the exact same thing!, but there you go, you live and learn " No I suspect BigSoulMan means me. I'd posted a comment on another thread and he replied to it mentioning the mag. I meant to reply to it but forgot what the thread was. Then time moved on I wasnt dodging the issue, we can either discuss on line here or contact me off list if you want I don't mind. Throughout the nineties when I lived on my own I could spend hours on the mag but now I'm older and living with someone times really tight. I used the bring the mag out every year but the last one #31 came out April 04 thats nearly 18 months ago. Plus I'm getting older and slowing down. But you don't need to hear this, you've paid your money and you've a right to wonder where the mag is. I accept that. I mentioned in #31's editorial my concerns about people paying subs because I was taking so long to get the mag out. Let me know your name and I'll check my files. I'm quite happy to refund your subs chq. derek I am working on #32 as I've lots of ideas for possible articles but things are going so slowly....

Guest Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 It's true - I was forced to abandon Soul Galore due to difficult circumstances and some subscribers did not receive refunds. At the time I didn't have access to everybody's address so I had to wait for reminders before I could refund their subs. Some people never got in touch at all, so they definitely didn't get their subs back. If anybody on here is owed monies please drop me a PM and I'll apologise and send your refund. Issue 10 was 70% finished at the time but never went out. I still have this unfinished mag, so if you want a copy let me know, by PM. Writing on records! Yeah, what a dick I was. There are hundreds of records knocking around with my name written on. I also used to write other things on the labels, like 'Soul City', 'Right On' and 'The Kid' I started writing about N/Soul in 1975 when the 'Northern Correspondent' of Chris Savory's Hot Buttered Soul packed in. I just started sending stuff in and Chris dutifully printed it. There wasn't a 'Northern Soul' mag as such at the time so, inspired by punk mags like 'Sniffin' Glue', I wrote the 1st issue of 'Soul Time' in 1976. I seem to remember it had articles by Rod Shard, Dave Withers, Dave Evison, Tim O'Keeffe and Richard Searling. I 'hired' a manual typrewriter from a shop on Corporation Street! That ran for 3 issues. Siz started 'New Soul Time' after that - not sure how many issues he did. I think this is a full list of the mags I did: SOUL TIME (3 issues), IT'S THE BEAT (1), NITE LIFE (1), GROOVIN' ALA GOGO (1), SOUL GALORE (9) I also wrote for Black Echoes for about 6 months, circa '77 (in between Searling and Brady). I never got paid, but I did get some snotty remarks from DJ's for uncovering their sounds! I'm not arsed about copyright, so feel free to post anything - if there's anything left that Martyn's Box website hasn't already used!

Guest Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 just highlighted a 90s look at mag that was in yesterdays article bit on frontpage of site - few clips from issue 8 I think link That's the one, Mike. Cheers. (Soul Galore - My Stella Artois Years) Did somebody send that in to you? It's littered with spelling mistakes - and they're not mine. I used a spellchecker, and checked all the Modern Soul details with Pete Smith. Great to see so many old names here. It's like being in a record bar. Great site BTW. Thanks to everyone for the compliments on my writing. I'm a Stand Up Comedian these days and I'm just finalising the details for my one-man show next year. It's called, 'Northern Soul - The Wigan Casino Years'. Basically it's an hour and a half of comedy about N/Soul in the 70's. I've got 6 venues lined up in the North West and I'm looking at some in the Midlands and Scotland. I'm sure I could sort out a discount for Soul Sourcers.
