Guest Nick Harrison Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 And what about Barry May...He had us up a few times didn't he? As did Tom Wainwright, Graeme Park, Ali Whitehead, Andy Ward, Marshall, Brandon Block, Danny Tag etc etc...........................on a more seriously focused DJ threaded topic, its got to be Tom Jackson Bob Jones Billy Davidson..........................................
Guest Simon Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 and a guy who did a set at Va Va Voom recently. Either Gav or Gaz Evans? My fault for not remembering his name but i danced to his entire set which is something that i can't remember doing before! I think it's Gaz, he's from Wales if anyone knows him? It's Gavin Evans, lovely chap & a great dj, haven't seen him or heard him play out for a good old while. Simon

Realpeoplesmusic Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I wasn't around back in the day, so I can only really comment on dj's who do the buisness everytime without fail which in all honesty there's not many! Karl Heard -has the ability to bring the floor to life like no other dj, has been at the top of the pile since i first seen him around 2/3 years ago Mik Parry Mace always pushing boundaries and can mix it up with various different styles: uptempo, mid-tempo, Rnb, boogaloo, funk, jazz etc. They're Proper dj's, if you put them in a club they'll get the place rocking where as a lot of northern dj's/collectors would fall flat on thier arse and probably get booed off the premises
Peter Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 (edited) Things have changed so much over the years, (but it is supposed to be only three) Colin Curtis, Soul Sam and Shifty. Edited August 1, 2010 by Peter
Dave Moore Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Without wishing to be disrepectful (yeah, you're right, I am going to be....) only dj's from about 20+ years ago (Butch and Searling excluded, really count. So; Searling Curtis Poke Why because? they knew which way was up, they knew what a soul record sounded like and they knew you didn't have to play pop (Poke's Joan Moody cover up aside). There were many other exceptional dj's over the years, but they were my favourites. Can't say as I have heard a 'northern' dj in 20 years that I would have paid in washers. Obviously a personal point of view, and one that I don't expect everyone to agree with. best, RB. We'll discount Andy Rix, Ady Croasdale, Clarkie, Dave Greet etc then Regards, Dave
Rich B Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010  We'll discount Andy Rix, Ady Croasdale, Clarkie, Dave Greet etc then  Regards, Dave Never heard Andy play out, though I occasionally talk to him becaue of work., He is a really nice guy, a great collector, hugely knowledgable and is a gifted detective. Ady is also a very nice chap - and clearly his work with Kent is of considerable benefit to us all - a top three dj? now possibly, I'll let you be the judge of that. But not in my top three. As for Dave, I have bought records off him, never heard him play. Is he any good? But if you wanted me to generalise? Yes, we would. best, RB.
grantdyche Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Not wanting to cause argument at all, Why no mentions of Russ Winstanley, Played many a fine tune at the Casino,O k he played some shite ones also,But so did many others But back in the day!!! , If you went to the Casino in the mid / late 70's ,Russ played a big part in your life, Never mind all the sell out bollo**s, If you went to the Casino during that time 50% of the records we danced to where played by Russ Winstanley, Did he discover them all?,Not a chance, Did you give a Shite.?Not a chance, Did you dance??? YES WE DID Music is in the ear of the beholder Grant
grantdyche Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 My hands are up,mate......Danced to everything that Sir Russ played... Yes at that time and moment he was a God!! Mind you the drugs did help.. , Drugs or not Mr Webb you would still have danced,And don't try and say you would not have, Pisses me off this "Anti Winstanley" thing, You I and 70% of the people on here never slagged him when we went to Wigan,And the other 30% would have slagged off Colin Curtis or Ian Levine,And you know that's the truth,Because we all did it !!!!!!!!!!,
grantdyche Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Do you think that the egos of Winstanley and Levine collided resulting in the split of NS in 76ish....l do....got tears in my eyes now .....seriously, cos l lost a few good mates and nearly a girlfriend cos of it.. Heard a story that Russ had a copy of Yvonne Baker "Didn't Say A Word" on cameo parkway( i Think ), And that Ian Levine didn't believe it so he went to the Casino after the Mecca had closed, And he stood by the stage all night waiting for it to be played,Only to jump up on stage to see the label had been covered by a beer mat, I think that without a doubt they hated each others guts Grant

Because he was the weak link in the line up ........Prince Buster FFS I used to bugger off into Mr Ms when he came on ( as I did with KM as well ).Yes Russ played some good sounds on occasion but for the last 3 or 4 years he was living on his reputation as being part of the furniture. So count me in the 30%
Theresa Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Yes we have done this thread before, but I think the accent may have been more on the influence of the DJs in question on your life. I'm pretty sure I had Buchanan, Thorley & Clarkie, with an honourable mention to Ady Croasdell for sucking me into the scene in the first place. Today's answer - who would I travel for? 1. Adam Buchanan - psychic link to my soul, perfect blend of 60s & modern. Sexiest DJ in the country 2. Pete Eccles - no-one rams an oldies dancefloor, reads it perfectly and keeps it full, like the Cakeboy. Sexiest DJ in, er, Kilsby Close 3. Dave Thorley - no-one pushes the boundaries, spins a tune, or twirls a cape for that matter, like DT Iranu indeed
Guest martyn Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 What if they had an early spot, mate, cos M's didn't open until 3.. How do you think I know what they played , my finger nails are still embeded in Ms doors;) ...........It was 2 though wasnt it ??

Rixy at his peak in the early 90s was one of the few collector/DJs that could get me on a plane to UK. Greety can still get me sniffin' in interest as to what he's currently playing. As can Karl Heard. Regards, Dave

Within a matter of weeks both playing Parkway copies, Ian's came off John A. not sure where Russ's came from but as a guess Simon. That's the story I heard from Ian Levine. I don't think Ian believed Y. B. was a real record at 1st. Dave. Edited August 1, 2010 by davetay

Davetay Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 How old where you and at what year did you first go and then stop going to the "Casino", That's a good question Me 73 age 18 - 75 age 20 A few times to sell or buy records in between Again 79 age 24 - 81 age 26 Never did any of the Friday Oldies. Dave.
Guest MissHongkongfuey Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Any DJ involved with No More Doggin.....They all really turned me on to R&B and 60's Soul. The Res DJ's and all the guests.... Mik Parry and Gav Arno for making me dance till my feet bled.....That really did happen and happened at Hideaway too! And the early days.....Rob Smith and Sam Moore! All the above gave me massive...."WTF is that" moments I'm gonna add Steve Hiscock for his soundfiles. Never heard his DJ sets but the sounds he's sent out have me dancing round the house. Its my fave folder sitting on my desktop! Teresa

Phil the last time I spoke to Robin, he told me Pete had come in from the cold and made contact, cause Pete, I am lead to believe still lives in Sweden or was it Denmark somewhere ? We still see and hear regularly from Louise Goodburn, Pete's ex who now lives in Scotland.

Was he with Mick Godfrey at the Winter Gardens. The last WG AD I was referring to , was the 2 Goodbye " one in the February of 2007 . I did not see Mick , but Pete was with Jonathan . I saw Jonathan first , and asked him if he knew of Peter's whereabouts : Jonathan replied " ask him yourself , he is behind you " Fine chap Peter , and a fine DJ . Malc

Denbo Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 (edited) Hope l don't offend anybody here 1) Adam Buchanan.... Cos it was him at Leicester Nottingham Oddfellows that really got me into Modern Soul in 83...Think he was still a teenger D.J. Remember before he played 'You Got Me Hung Me' by King Tutt he said "Phil, you've never heard anything like this!" I hadn't it just blew me away... 2) Brian Rae.......for giving me lifts everywhere in his Vauxhall Cavilier and never turning down a record request from me.....Oh and giving me loads of fags.... 3) Richard Searling......For trying to keep Wigan Soulful.....and being pleasant and friendly.......Same for the two above 1 - Alan Day (or was it Colin Curtis?) circa Mecca / Torch days - Great records but just as good was his clear voiced style of banter in between the records, keeping the audience informed as to what was being played and to what it was they were dancing their heads off to. 2 - Liverpool's Billy Butler circa Mardi Gras / Cavern days - Great records (mostly British) with a hilarious style of banter in between the records. 3 - Ian Levine - Just brilliant records!!! QED. Edited August 2, 2010 by denbo

Guest Nick Harrison Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Fine chap Peter , and a fine DJ . Malc Would agree with that Malc, on and off the scene, Pete was so balanced, but looking back at those "all back to mine everybody" - which was generally 2 days and 3 nites without sleep, when he lived in West Butterwick, was a killer, leaving tuesday or wednesday morning after a full on weekend, and may I add Gary Walsh always lasted the distance. .

We played most of the brand new and big tunes of the day from Clifton.... Bobby King "If You Don't want My Love" - Zingara "I Surrender" / "Haunted House" - Gary Glenn "Gonna Give You My Love" - Tony Fox "Love Let Love & Be Loved" - Melba Moore "Lets Stand Together" - Gayle Adams "Lets Go All The Way" - Leon Bryant "Mighty Body" etc. alongside some great 60's & 70's. So yes, I would say you're right and that the Greyhound was the first place to play Never Too Much outside the Nighter scene. Good times my friend. Very good times. And, as you know, you are one of my favourite people ever! Sean

macca Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I wll cite the Peterborough trio of Andy 'Smudge' Smith, Gary Spencer and Paul Donnelly. They were instrumental in my formative years and without whom it simply wouldn't have happened for me. The first 60 count record box that I ever sifted through was one of theirs and who can forget how wondrous those US labels looked to 14 year old eyes. Gracias, gracias. Later on I liked John Vincent a lot, probably because he would play stuff like Matt Lucas and both sides of the Del-Larks and refused to cue out that rocky guitar solo in Taj Mahal's A Lot Of Love. He played the odd clunker too, but didn't they all? Soul Sam occupies second place, historically. An extraordinary ear for a tune and boundless enthusiam. He's a joy to watch too. In first place, again historically, is Richard Searling. I think all superlatives fall short when describing this man's input throughout the Wigan years. Finally, what about a special category award for innovation and influence? Ian Levine & Colin Curtis had them all and played them all first and I'll forever regret not making a trip to Blackpool pre-76. Jumping into this century, I think Butch deserves the ultimate accolade of pez gordo supremo (supreme fat fish). He's combined the innovation of the Blackpool team with Sam & Richard's uncanny ear for a tune and possesses an engaging style too. Not forgetting my adopted homeland, over in Spain there are some great jocks too. Edu, David, Dani, Albert and Sergio all spin some incredible stuff and certainly know how to 'read' crowds and 'apply the medicine'.
Guest topcatnumpty1 Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Well the question was top 3 D,J, OF ALL TIME; Dave Lee Travis Johnnie Walker Simon Dee They all played a superb variety of all styles of music, whereas all the others mentioned on here were very pigeon holed and only played Soul Music T.C
