Guest Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 (edited) Hope l don't offend anybody here 1) Adam Buchanan.... Cos it was him at Leicester Nottingham Oddfellows that really got me into Modern Soul in 83...Think he was still a teenger D.J. Remember before he played 'You Got Me Hung Me' by King Tutt he said "Phil, you've never heard anything like this!" I hadn't it just blew me away... 2) Brian Rae.......for giving me lifts everywhere in his Vauxhall Cavilier and never turning down a record request from me.....Oh and giving me loads of fags.... 3) Richard Searling......For trying to keep Wigan Soulful.....and being pleasant and friendly.......Same for the two above Edited July 31, 2010 by webbydublin
Guest JIM BARRY Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 1. pat brady......he also kept wigan soulful and took on the baton when it closed....stafford parr hall leeds central -- 2. butch.......the newies keep on coming, and his oldies collection is breathtaking 3. ian levine.....not everyones cupof tea but just think about what he discovered from 71 - 76
TOAD Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 searling sam and brady 3 quality djs with taste and style
Guest Phoenix8049 Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Richard Searling, cause without him this scene would have been missing some cracking classics tunes that he discovered. And also his enthusiasm for the Scene as well. Dave Evison,a really nice guy who always tried to find time to speak everybody he could. And also not up his own arse, like some past DJs i could mention. And last but not least Rob Smith,a perfect gentleman, and one DJ no matter where the venue is or how poor the sound system is,you can always hear every word he says on the mic. No disrespect intended to any other DJs not mentioned, but i think Webby means this is more a personal opinion of DJs we all know, and there are a lot out there i do not know. Stu.
Guest brivinyl Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 My top three choice:- JOHN PEEL EMPEROR ROSKO MIKE RAVEN all three educated me with their choice of music as I was growing up, I've so much to thank them for.
arnie j Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 (edited) keb darge for turning this scene on its head guy hennigan for making me think ...what the fook is this ! dave thorley for stafford (this applies to the previous two also) and giving me memories of 80s stafford that i will cherish forever a bit sentimental i know but ive had a few cans:beer: jason these are in no particular order by the way Edited July 31, 2010 by arnie j
Guest JIM BARRY Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Nice one,cos l never even thought of Radio D'J's.....Could never understand what the Emperor was saying.. based his persona on the legendary 50s 60s american d.j wolfman jack. jack was immortalised in the film lemon popcicle.
Guest Brian Ellis Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 My top three choice:- JOHN PEEL EMPEROR ROSKO MIKE RAVEN all three educated me with their choice of music as I was growing up, I've so much to thank them for. Was DJing at Whitchurch Civic, with Rosko on as the 'star' attraction. He started playing his set but to no response as the Whitchurch crowd had been 'brought up' on much better stuff. Ended up feeding him my records to play so he could have a dancefloor moving. Liked the guy - he was seemingly genuinely interested in the records I was giving him about which he had no previous knowledge (even though, even then, they were pretty much run-of-the-mill NS).
Guest mickeyb Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Was Tony De Vit a house DJ? Yeah, he used to play at Bakers in Birmingham a lot in the mid 90's. One of the original Trance DJ''s. He passed on in about 96 or 97, think it was AIDS related.
bri pinch Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 RICHARD SEARLING SOUL SAM ANDY DYSON IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER, AND NOT BOTHERED ABOUT EXPLAINING WHY. BRI PINCH
Guest Matt Male Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 When i first got into northern it was probably... Brian Rae Steve Whittle Gary Rushbrooke Thesedays it's Karl Heard Des Parker Pat Bleasdale because these three play the music that captures the flavour of the scene at the moment and are inspirational in the sound they select.
Guest mickeyb Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Are you tired Bri? Now I''ve thought about it:- Larry Levan Frankie Knuckles David Morales
Guest Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Rob Smith Butch i'm stuck now, i'll go with Bub rip, one of the funniest djs i have known...........Keb was pretty good too.oh must mention Karl Heard he's up there.
Guest mickeyb Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 I got into a massive arguement after Rugby for saying Frankie Knuckles was brilliant as is David Morales..... Don't know who the other fella is though....time for a google methinks He was a legend - I don't think house would've been the same without him. Mixing Salsoul and West End and Prelude right back in the day. There's a great website that's got sessions from all the US DJ''s over the last 35 years or so. I'll have a look and come back - sorry to everyone else who wants to vote for Russ etc. I guess me and Phil should be PM'ing but f*ck it I'm mashed and I can't be arsed.
Guest kevnewry Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Brian Rae. Pat Brady. Richard Searling. And........................... Phil Sheilds who got me back into it all again.........

Agentsmith Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 IMHO, THE LAST 30 YEARS HAS SEEN THE GREATEST PROLIFERATION OF DJS AND IN TURN THESE EXPONENTS HAVE BOUGHT ABOUT THE RENAISSANCE OF THE SCENE, CERTAINLY SINCE 96, WITH THE RITZ, KINGS HALL, BRIGHOUSE, TSOP AND THE WEEKENDERS IN MIND.... MY FAVOURITE DJ'S: GINGER TAYLOR - IVE ONLY REALLY KNOWN RAY SINCE 2001, OF COURSE IVE BEEN AWARE OF THE NAME SINCE THE 70'S, BUT GETTING TO MEET AND ASSOCIATE WITH HIM HAS BEEN A REVELATION...HE IS ETERNAL, I WOULD SAY THAT HE IS ONE OF THE FEW WHO CAN RE-INVENT HIMSELF THROUGH EACH ERA AND HE STILL DELIVERS THE GOODS EFFORTLESSLY. I THINK THE DAY WILL COME WHEN TOD'S FAVOURITE SON HAS A COMMEMORATIVE STATUE BEARING HIS NAME IN THE TOWN. HE MARKETS GLOBALLY AND HAS SPREAD THE GOSPEL TO OUR EUROPEAN FRIENDS. RICHARD SEARLING - JUST STARRY - EYED IN THE 70'S AT THE CASINO WONDERING WHO THESE GUYS FRONTING WIGAN WERE. THE NAMES WERE REGULARLY IN B & S. ONE THURSDAY EVENING, WALSALL M.B.C. ORGANIZED A N.S. NIGHT AT THE TOWN HALL.......PROBABLY AT THE BEHEST OF MY NAGGING AND AS A RESULT RICHARD AND DAVE.E TURNED UP.....RICHARD EVEN BOUGHT A 52 SEATER FROM BOLTON.....600 SOULS IN THE BUILDING, WIGAN CAME TO WALSALL....MAGIC!!....REALLY GOT TO KNOW HIM AT TSOP AND THE RITZ ( MY ALL-TIME FAV VENUE ) AND HIS RADIO SHOWS WERE A NOT-MISS, HIS CHARISMA AND MAGNETISM CAN MAKE YOU LISTEN AND APPRECIATE ANYTHING KENNY BURRELL - FRANK WILSON ASIDE, HE HAS A FANTASTIC SELECTION OF TUNES THAT HE BLENDS SKILFULLY, AN UNASSUMING PERSONA AND, HE HAS BEEN A DOGGED SERVANT OF THE SCENE, BRINGING UP THE REAR OF MANY AN EVENT....DAYLIGHT HOURS EVEN BUT THE MANY WHO HAVE WITNESSED THIS, ALSO DID IT FOR ONE REASON ALONE AND I'LL TYPIFY THIS WITH A SINGULAR ANECDOTE: BLACKPOOL TOWER 07...400/500 SOULIES STILL IN THE BUILDING AT THE END OF 19 HOURS....JUST SO THEY COULD HEAR KEN AND SO ASTUTE IS HIS MEMORY AND EAR, HE PLAYED A TOTALLY DIFFERENT SET WITH NO TUNES REPEATED. ITS HARD TO BE IMPARTIAL WHERE OUR AMAZING DJ CLIENTEL ARE CONCERNED AND WE ALL, AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER HAVE DEVELOPED CLOSE FRIENDSHIPS WITH THEM AND PEOPLE LIKE COLIN C., BUTCH, BOB HINSLEY SEAN CHAPMAN, NIGE BROWN AND THE LIKES ARE NEVER FAR FROM MY MIND....IN ESSENCE, WE HAVE A WEALTH OF TALENT AND ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE AT ANY VENUE YOU CARE TO NAME. P.S. WE SHOULD ALSO LEND A CARE TO PEOPLE LIKE IAN LEVINE, TIM BROWN, JOHN MANSHIP AND JOHN ANDERSON WHO HAVE BOUGHT SO MANY TUNES TO THE ATTENTION OF NOT JUST THE SOUL FRATERNITY BUT THE DJS ALSO.

Guest Brian Ellis Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 What a nice story that is.. Didn't he have a show on Radio lunch-time on a Saturday on Radio One.....Did you find out his real name per chance? Hi Webby Rosko's real name: Michael Pasternak. And he did have a Saturday lunchtime Radio Show in the 70s. It was the time when 'jingles' were all the rage and he had some top jingles! He brought along a couple of mini-skirted dancers with him to Whitchurch who gyrated a bit on the stage - Pole dancing comes to Whitchurch 70s style

Mrtag Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Didn't Pep DJ at Wigan at one tiime though,mate..? A GREAT OLDIES DJ HAS GOT TO BE TOT JOHNSON AND IF YOU EVER SAW HIS HOUSE HE HAS MORE VINYL THAN HMV!!
Guest martyn Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Richard Searling - His spots during the later Wigan years 79-81 were the best ever in my time on the scene (75 onwards) . Almost all of what he was playing then are regarded as classics now , hardly a duff spin from him in that period at all . Soul Sam - Always his own man , has been responsible for breaking more sounds than most of the others put together . I will leave it at that , to name a third would be unfair on so many others who have given me untold pleasure over the years
Guest Simon Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 My top 3 would be Dave, Lee & erm Travis, all play blinding oldies & not a modern record in sight. Simon

But the question is 'Your Top 3 DJ's.....Not tell us every DJ that does it for you... Are you trying to start a fight Webby? I was having the same problem as Karen actually although to narrow it down mine would be... Ted Massey Johnny Fingers and a guy who did a set at Va Va Voom recently. Either Gav or Gaz Evans? My fault for not remembering his name but i danced to his entire set which is something that i can't remember doing before! I think it's Gaz, he's from Wales if anyone knows him?
Guest Mrs Simsy Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Yes Kylee, put your Dukes up....Me and you in the car-park next Rugby
Guest Nick Harrison Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Shit kickers and rare soul fuckers - then its got to be Webby, Kenny Dope Gonzalez Louie Vega Tony Humphries Oakenfold, Civiles and Cole, C J Mackintosh for having established an total presence as Dee Jays, remixes and producers, blending soul, hip hop, jazz to create a unique musical experience that defies boundaries and conventional limitations. .
Guest Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 (edited) But the question is 'Your Top 3 DJ's.....Not tell us every DJ that does it for you... I don't have a top 3, I have a top 17 that are equal in entertaining me And they're not all friends, believe me Edited August 1, 2010 by TheSoulgirl
Rich B Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Without wishing to be disrepectful (yeah, you're right, I am going to be....) only dj's from about 20+ years ago (Butch and Searling excluded, really count. So; Searling Curtis Poke Why because? they knew which way was up, they knew what a soul record sounded like and they knew you didn't have to play pop (Poke's Joan Moody cover up aside). There were many other exceptional dj's over the years, but they were my favourites. Can't say as I have heard a 'northern' dj in 20 years that I would have paid in washers. Obviously a personal point of view, and one that I don't expect everyone to agree with. best, RB.
