Guest Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Fred Smith the very talented LA record producer and owner of the KEYMEN record label suffered a heart attack last night and sadly died. Fred joined us at Soultripusa in LA last year and loved every minute of watching the UK contingent dancing to the Fi-dels ,Furys etc. A major influence on the Mirwood label too. A very nice guy who entered the showbusiness world via Effie Smith his mother, who co-incendantally owned Duo/Tri-Disc. I will post up more info as I receive it from my dear friend Jimmy Mack.
Guest Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Sad news. As someone said to me recently, cherish them while you still can.

For me Fred was one of the live highlights of the whole LA thing he was absolutely mindblowingly good as someone said at the time "he must have been gargling with battery acid" just before his performance a proper SOUL singer in the classic sense. A sad loss John

He sat talking to James McEachin and myself on the Sunday afternoon, still coming to terms with the site of 400 Brits stomping away to 'I'm Satisfied With You'
Guest Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 I didn't like to say anything ...but I was surprised to hear that Mr Smith had sung.

Guest brianhorton Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING FRED AT LAST YEARS L.A. SOUL WEEK AND GOT HIM TO AUTOGRAPH MY JACKIE LEE "THE DUCK" ALBUM, A LOVELY GUY WHO WAS KNOCKED OUT BY WITNESSING THE NORTHERN SCENE. R.I.P.
Guest Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 This really is sad news - I've only very recently found out about Fred Smith - I love all that Mirwood stuff RIP Fred
