Mal C Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Musette - Label Of The Week >>>THE MUSETTE RECORDS STORY<<< This weeks been exceptional, this time last Sunday I was browsing Ebay as normal, I always start with typing in Musette on the off chance I might find some 45's on the label, anyhow after 6 or 7 years of typing that in and sending in Listings of Known tracks that came out, 2 new 45's I had never seen before were listed by a seller, I bid and won both tonight, so before some guy who's been collecting 20 years more that I have emais in and says yeah I got them and a load more not on your List, here's what reckon is a s much as anybody knows: MR-100– Unknown MR-101– Unknown MR-102 – Sonny Craver - I'mNo Fool / Come Back MR-103 – Unknown MR-104 – Unknown MR-105 – Unknown MR-106– Unknown MR-107– Unknown MR-108– Unknown MR-109 / MR-110 - Bobby Bryant Sextet -Fifty-Eighth Street / A Change is Gonna Come MR-112 – June Jackson - You're Welcome /Bottoms Up 76- 9151 – Mickie Champion -What Good Am I(Without You) / The Hurt Still Lingers On 65-10 – Lenni Groves - Sweet Sixteen (With ABroken Heart) / Fool For A Day 65-11 – Lennie Groves - Bye Bye Baby / AMillion Tears Ago 65-12 – Lenni Groves - Sweet Sixteen (With ABroken Heart) / Good Show 65-13 – Garnett Sykes -Longer Than Forever /Go Go Girl 65-14 – Ervin Rucker -She's Alright / KidsTogether 65-15 – Unknown but that Musette Acetate exists and states - You know How Love Is / Show Business (MR xx 615) * not credited but June Jackson sang that, I'd eat my hat if he did not!) 65-16 – Arlene Williams - Duck 'All Over Town'/ Duck 'All Over Town' (Part 2) 65-17 – The Other Four - Searching For My Love/ Why Musette Acetate – (June Jackson-not confirmedbut deffo him) - You know How Love Is / Show Business (MR xx 615) So The two New tracks to me are 65-12 – Lenni Groves - Sweet Sixteen (With A Broken Heart) / Good Show and MR-109 / MR-110 - Bobby Bryant Sextet -Fifty-Eighth Street / A Change is Gonna Come. They are not mint but who cares, they exist and I'l be tracking down Mint copies from here on in... The Bobby Bryant release states produced by R.O Bryant, and these two tracks gained a release on the Chess label nationally. For me the addition of MR-109 /MR-110 really point to there very likely being releases for the missing MR series numbers, 101, 103, 104,105,106,107,108, who knows but these are really obscure…. Miki Champion is a very strange release with a release number 76-9151 that does not fit in any order, 3 are on the blue label, the rest on Orange But I did read somewhere that a green label release came out??? So if I got this right, the original release of 'I wanna thank you' on Stanton which made one side of a later Terri De release, then what might be the orig of I wanna thank you by Goody Colbert on Revue... then the alt version of 'Come back to me' which also makes one side of the Musette singll by the Phantom, basically Sonny craver on Karisma, this is a different and better take in my opinion to the Musette side.. then the very very very rare June Jackson... Malcolm JJ Jackson (Calla/Loma etc) is Jerome Louis Jackson. I'm sure someone mentioned years ago who June Jackson was but can't remember.
Chalky Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Seen the name June Jackson on quite a few discs, credited as writer, arranger, producer etc. The Bootleggers on Discovery just one, he's the featured artist on the flip. Also his great outing on Imperial, Its What's Underneath That Counts.

Mal C Posted July 28, 2010 Author Posted July 28, 2010 (edited) This thread ends Sunday, confined to the archives, but before that happens it good to finish on a high, so having spoken to Angelo who did the Musette review on Dave Rimmer's site all this week, I can offer these tantalizing tit bits: ------------ MR-112 – June Jackson - You're Welcome /Bottoms Up Someone a few months ago was selling the Imperial Records single on "You're Welcome," and it was a promotional single (black on the left hand side with color logo and light brown for the rest of the label), it was definitely Imperial/Liberty and the artist, production credits remained the same, with the exception of the Imperial single catalogue number. Needless to say, this blew me away when I saw it, as I wondered if there were any other singles Imperial and/or Liberty might have picked up for national release. Green Musette Label Lenni/Lennie Groves singles The green label; this was the original label version of the Lenni/Lennie Groves singles, light green with black print; in fact, this was the only time I have seen a green Musette release. A collector in my hometown of San Diego just found the "Sweet Sixteen" on the green label. All The Musette Best, ------------ What can you say? June Jackson - your welcome got a promo on Liberty / imperial, thats up there with the Ivories on Wand, and Green label Mustte releases, I must be a tad sad, but thats some of the most exciting collecting stuff I've heard in years... In my opinion got to be June Edwards, you can judge for yourself when refosoul is open again and I can upload the sound files. Many thanks to Chris Morgan for his kind permission to use these.

Based on the fact the missing number in this sequence is 15 and that the Americans (small indie label owners etc) tend to use release dates , I suspect the Mickie Champion release was programmed for 65-15 but for some reason did not happen??? Then in 1976 it got its release with the 15 in the middle of its release date or 1st of September or 9th January. it sounds like Im stretching it a bit but based on years of collecting etc etc then it would account for odd release number and the missing 65-15 as this track is defo NOT a 70's tune. Dave Halsall aka TMIB You could be right about the 65 representing 1965 - as you say, other labels do use this kind of prefix - HSI Prix springs to mind. It could be that it was originally scheduled for 65-15, before that number was reallocated to June Jackson. I'm sure that the 76 does mean something but not 1976. The bootlegs predate that year, so the orig release would have been before that (might have been a mistake and they meant 66-9151 ??) Cheers Mick
