Allnighter Enticer

A thread for the none attendees

There are more people who don't do allnighters than do and they all have their reasons be it money, tiredness, age, health, lost the urge etc.

Lets say that you fall into the category of allnighter none attendee, what would it take to entice you to go?

Would it be a band? Djs, a reunion or some thing else?

An offer of a decent job (i.e good salaries) in the North, East, West or even South of England for both me & Ali plus an offer we couldn't refuse on our current house to allow us to move from Scotland which is pretty much a desert these days for all-nighters & the cost of travelling is too much these days. Basically if I lived nearer to all nighter venues I would probably go more often.

I am currently on my 4th of 5 overnights on the trot. Due to fall into bed Monday at approx 8am. It takes me 3 days to recover from a shift like this. For me to do more overnights even for recreation along with the other shifts I do would create me more body clock issues. This weekend I am working and next weekend too. I can't wait to have a wekend at home.But....I admit I should get off my back side and visit a few gigs here and there to show support etc. Plus, I am lazy......Plus I like CSI Vegas too much!

I can't say that the traditional 12-8 option holds that much of an attraction for me these days. I'm not into the traditional all-nighter stimulants anymore and I find alcohol in excessive quantities kills it for me, mentally and physically, so doggedly 'staying the course' till 8am seems rather pointless. I very much like having a hotel room I can crash in, if it all becomes too much (tiredness and/or apathy) so the weekender events here in Spain suit me fine. I can combine the music and socialising with the awesome cultural treats that spain has to offer, so I'm euros in.

Just more time, weekends off.

I work 4 on 4 off - so only get a few weekends off.

two 12 hour days then two 12 hour nights - then overtime on top most 4 off .

then there is the family, my little boy comes first and I get precious little time to spend with him as it is.

so it would be utterly selfish for me to start thinking I can piss off for weekends and come home shagged with no patience for him.

they are only young for a short time, and they remember everything when they get older.

He understands that I spend all my cash collecting old records, but collecting does not take me away from the family all weekend.

It would be great to get out and about again, especially on the Soul scene - I do know what I am missing.

I have done more than my fair share of All nighters, Weekenders, Festivals, Gigs and House clubs etc. in the 80s and 90s.

But at the moment its work and family, and two weeks abroad with them once a year.

That's the way it is for me at the moment and I am loving it !

I suppose as he gets older I will find I have more opportunity's to get out and about

Who knows

one of the reasons i stopped doin niters many years ago was i couldnt hack the horrendous comedowns afterwards, it got worse as i got older, really messed me up for a few days and then id go do it all again ! didnt make sense in the end, now i only manage soul nites and i dont mind sitting at home with a beer and me edfones on with soul music, its strange but i listen to more soul music now and collect more than i ever did when i was allnighter active years ago and i went to at least one allnighter every weekend for ten years at one point ! being a single dad dictates what i can and cant do these days and im all the better for it, im not knocking those who do allnighters regulary(wish i had the choice to be honest) but just giving my angle to this debate, so in answer to imberboys question....not much could entice me to a allnighter these days

To be honest nothing so to speak would make me go. The only one I'd say that I've been to on an irregular basis is the 100 Club, only other allnighter that I've been to in the past couple of years was the 1st Wotton Hall one in Gloucester.

I prefer soul-nights to allnighters, like many others my main priority is my family. Due to the nature of my work I get 2 weekends off out of 4, so the thought of spending a few hours driving followed by an 8 hour allnighter, then a return journey, culminating in Sunday spent allday in bed, is to me a waste of a weekend off.

However, I would like to attend the 100 Club more than I do. It's very close to where I live, I can drive up there and get there for the start (10pm) and then bail out at 2am or 3am, get home and still get enough kip in before spending Sunday with the family. I've only ever managed to last a whole night once, this was when I went by train, because the time before I'd got a nightbus home (after that time I swore I'd never get a nightbus :D ). The main problems are that it always seems to be on when I'm working at weekends, or I remember the awful traffic driving up London and I get put off (poor excuse really, just getting lazy I suppose). The main draw for me at the 100 Club isn't so much the music to be heard, but more the music that is for sale!

As for the Wotton Hall, my In-Laws live within a 5 minute drive of the venue, so if I'm not working and I've got the money then me and the brother-in-law go. Also the kids get to see their grandparents & uncle, so I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak.

A more interesting question could be, How many so-called allnighter goers (those that say they attend as many as they can) regularly leave before the end or last just a few hours? I'd guess there's quite a few so-called allnighter goers that just use them like a soul-night, just go for 3 to 4 hours, but because they've been to an "allnighter", they can call themselves allnighter goers!

I can deal with the three under-sevens no problem, and I used to do a niter every week & run a multi-million quid business standing on my head before I had the Half-Prices - it's someone to look after the husband until Wednesday that I need. Trying to translate Justinspeak into human language and produce his quotations and invoices on Comedown Monday, Hanging Tuesday or Gallows Wednesday really pushes the boundaries of mental torture

I would say not a lot Ian; a few bail out 'early like at 4 or 5, but never see a mass exodus after a few hours; say 2 o'clock-ish - what woul be the point in going??

I take my hat off to you Dave  , I know you travel the length and breadth of this country from the South Coast to attend allnighters. So for you to do all that and leave early would be pointless. What I was trying to say (in my naieve manner) was those that live more local to nighter venues (or anywhere along the M62 :D ).

I have a question (sorry make that some) for you Dave. When attending allnighters (say Burnley for instance, purely because it's a long way from Hampshire before anyone says anything), do you drive up to arrive at the start time or do you arrive early at a friends for a few hours to relax after the drive? Also is it similar for the journey home, do you just drive straight home afterwards? It's just that I think it's the travelling part that puts me off most times.

now my girlfreind live in Stockport - i will driver there first and after for the weekend...but to answer your question fully before that it would be drive to Burnley (with Steve C or Russ or both) straight from the south coast and then staight back afterwards.

there have been exceptions like when we 3 went via Molly's house in Bedford for no reason but to drop one of our cars off. It took over 7 hours to get to Burnley that nite - which wouldn't have been too bad had Russ not decided to drink a bottle of vodka to himself.....LOL

and the other time was straight up to Burnley - the up to Newto Aycliffe on the Saturday morning.

ah - another time was when DJing up there - bad form to turn up late so we went to visit the Watermans first and after

but generally drive up - drive back (or in the main Steve will be the driver)

I've always considered the journey to an allnighter and back home again as part of the fun. Not quite so enjoyable if I'm driving on my own but then it becomes a chance to crank the volume up and listen to some of my latest buys etc. When there's 2 or 3 in the car it tends to descend into laughable chaos and some of my best memories are of journeys up and down the country, Kev and myself taking 45 minutes to find a venue 2mins away despite having a satnav and of Johnny Fingers getting me totally battered on our way to a venue we were booked to double deck DJ at and hardly being able to focus my eyes once getting behind the decks, and a memorable 4 hour trip home to Coventry from the Marrs Bar in Worcester despite having made the same (hour max) journey hundreds of times before :D:lol:

That was the night I drove up on my own as you & Steve were DJing & I couldnt get out of work early, arrived at Chris n Marcelles just as you guys were leaving..........then drove back alone Sunday, shitty come down in the car & was selling up until Wednesday  !. But generally speaking the journey is actually part of the experience, aint nothing like a Nighter journey with Steve C, Dave Abbott & myself.....sometimes another one of our long suffering friends like Jason along for the ride..........

I could write a book on the experiences I have had travelling to & from Nighters, jumping trains, stolen vehicles, works vans, hitch hiking.......unfortunately as a Southern Soulie pretty much where ever you end up to dance All Night will be a marathion of sorts, but its all part of the fun.......the fishing radio programme, juggling monkeys, passengers that we have nearly killed over the course of what we aptly now call the lost weekends (when we would do several events over one weekend). One unforgetable weekend when the train was cancelled from Eastleigh to London & I just jumped in a Taxi, luckily Ady cashed me a cheque from the 100 Club door takings, other wise I would have had to 'disappeared'.

I appreciate many people are older, wiser & have more responsibilities including children & careers, also know that 'not' attending Allnighters doesn't make you enjoy soul music any less, or diminishes your passion, but Allnighters are the Real Deal, its where it all happens, both off & on the dance floor & whilst I woork away from home home & have all the responsibilities mentioned above & more if you have the inclination with very little organisation you can do it, I have never missed one of my 10 year old boys footy matches for example, I find I can operate pretty much normally for the rest of Sunday, although I can be a bit of nightmare Tues/Weds, I just manage it & organise myself to take this into account.

I hope I never stop attending Allnighters & will always be the last man standing on most dance floors.................

Dave/Steve C.................just remembered the morning driving back from some Nighter, when Steve had to stop at every services nearly for something to eat or drink, it was hilarious, but took us hours to get home, when we were only a couple of miles from home the car broke down & I called Mrs V, to let her know we would be late cos of car trouble & she wouldnt believe me...............

What's the point trying to entice anyone to go to an all-nighter when you have certain promoters doing their level best to ruin it just so they can run a night. What's the point in having a very comprehensive events calendar and all-nighter planner on here when a few take no notice of what is already happening?

goes to show that the travelling to and from an event are sometimes more of a laugh than the event :-)

If it helps, I always sing from the rooftops the nighters that are the best (which of course is subjective and personal at the end of the day).

I try to convey the true facts. When I say it's awesome, it is

I've certainly learned, over the last 12 months, that you cannot sway people from what they want to hear. For the most part that's going to be 'oldies'. As previously mentioned, humans like familiarity and completely rebel against that which they do not know. You cannot sway them or channel them into something new. You can only do what you're doing.... keep things moving forward in the hope of subscripting new subscribers along the way. It's an arduous task, someone has to do it, and you're doing the right thing :g:

Hi Karen,

not trying to sway anyone one way or the other or try and say where they should go, its just a matter of promoters putting a venue on for the sake of it in an already over crowded calendar, often the same night and an hour or so away, sometimes less. Maybe if a bit of unity shown and a bit of respect of already established venues then the all-nighter scene could well be a lot healthier and the need to entice some back might not be needed so much. What is the point in splitting an already dwindling crowd?

yes it's all subjective and we all have different tastes and requirements but two poorly attended venues not far from each other are not doing the scene any good.

I completely agree Karl... but find a man with a record collection, who loves to have an adulating audience, you'll find a promoter. Completely the wrong incentive in my opinion because it detracts from the journey I'm expecting and perhaps the journey many others are expecting.

It begs the question; are some putting up with what's given to what could be experienced just because their friends are doing the same?

I've never, personally, been swayed by what my friends are doing. Instead, I set my sights on what I want to attend, arrive there, and hook up with those I know. If I know no-one, who cares... I'll know someone by the end of the night :g:

not suggesting banning orders or anything like, just a bit of common sense.

The age old question Des...

Don't ever liked closed shop.... There must always be room for self expression too... Yes tooooooooooooo many events and too many djs....

A big difference in the last 10 years is the ammount of quality ( imo ) rare soul events that run alongside all niters, you can get your fix of rare soul without the handbag brigade, get home and rest and still be able to do other things on a weekend.. Thats the option for many now, we aint spring chicks anymore  ..

The early start of niters does impact on local soul clubs and the late licence of the soul clubs, 3am does impact on the niter, no problem in the past, we all were up for doing both but not anymore....

Things will have to change as the crowd gets older and not a huge ammount of youth to fill the void....

It will take some sorting as many promoters aint on each others xmas card list but it will have to be sorted....

Lets hope heads can come together and keep the scene going strong... One thing i don't wanna see is the bitch fights and mudd slinging on a public forum  , it shows no class, poor breeding and a lack of respect for the thousands of people who have supported events over the years..

It will take the promoters of soul clubs and all niters to put heads together and sort something out...

We now have some djs out playing every weekend tumbleweed3.gif , maybe play less folks and keep it fresh, leave the box at home and go and support another event..

Many clubs are every month and struggle to get a crowd, go bi monthly or every qtr then, you will get a better turn out and also stop the night looking stale....

This topic is niter enticer, this means a look at the whole soul scene... People will only go out so many times a year, be that soul club or all niter...

There as been a need for heads to come together for many years now but some would not piss on each other if they were on fire  , thats been one of the big problems and will remain so....

There is a need for more input from certain promoters and djs, but many of them have no input at all on forums or in fanzines, they choose to keep quiet, this means nothing gets sorted and this topic crops up a few times every year.... Maybe some of these folk could have some input here?????

Many folk have plenty to say while talking in dark corners, that gets fooook all sorted, its needs to be brought to the table...

Too many djs are clinging on to spots and don't want to rock the boat and maybe upset the promoters who give them bookings, you know who you are folks and many of you say nothing out loud... Nothing at all... This does not help the progression of the best music scene in the history of the universe.....

A smoking of the peace pipe is needed and some thought put into promotions... Don't just do that " well i could not find anothe date" so you put on an event to clash with another close by and split the crowd, cause friction among promoters and leave a bad smell that lingers for far too long....

There iis an all niter planner, set out well in advance... Why don't all them promoters come on the forum and share thoughts with the rest of us.... plan out the year between yourselfs and let the punters have input too, you could have local club promoters also chipping in with thoughts... This would be a big help indeed and a way forward....

An all niter promoters topic with all the all niter promoters/ djs taking part, now that would be something that many many punters would like to see....

A classic example is the extra all niter at Stoke Kings Hall in August to promote this new soul film.... Its not anything thats been on the all niter calendar, did the promoters look at the calendar and not see another all niter listed just down the road, did they also talk to local club promoters???? they would like to fill a venue that holds over 1,500 people and i am sure they would like it full, where do they expect to get the crowd from, joe public or drag them away from other soul events and again cause friction and piss people off.... If the promoters of this event did talk to all parties and take into account other soul promotions that weekend then please let us know, i would not want to cast you in a bad light if its not the case.....

Some people need to go out and buy a big mirror  , then take a good look into it.... You talk like little Red riding hood but all we see is the wolf... :)

Rant over.. time for work...

peace... love and rice pudding will bring this world back together...

You say there shouldn't be bitch fighting and mud slinging on a public forum and you then go and have a go at an all-nighter in Stoke. I don't see any other all-nighters that night either in the events guide for that night??? Is it because they are not scene regulars and seem fair game? I bet the night is packed whatever happens!

Why not have a go at say Shaun Gibbons who after years in the wilderness marches back onto the scene and clashes at least twice this year with a venue you are involved with, no more than an hour away from each other. Or Burnley which stopped for various reasons including lack of support and commitment yet Barrie brings it back, clashes with a long established venue little more than an hour away and so I hear gets 50 punters in, there are probably no other Friday all nighters so why clash? The next one is now scheduled on an already busy Bank Holiday weekend. Common sense would say have it a week earlier or something just to spread things about. There are plenty of other instances I could mention.

If it can't be discussed on a forum which is about everything to do with the scene then where should it be discussed? The promoters don't talk to each other, some do, but most don't so it would never get mentioned otherwise.

Who are the DJ's clinging to spots, is that their fault, I don't think so, I would look more towards the promoter for allowing it.

There is plenty of scope for all-nighters to suit everyone, but what is needed is some common sense and some respect for fellow promoters and the paying public. Maybe promoters should look at going every other month but something needs to be done or the scene will dwindle and wither away long before its time due to the short sightedness of promoters.

Allnighter Enticer A thread for the none attendees

There are more people who don't do allnighters than do and they all have their reasons be it money, tiredness, age, health, lost the urge etc.Lets say that you fall into the category of allnighter none attendee, what would it take to entice you to go? Would it be a band? Djs, a reunion or some thing else?

No no and No

I have no desire to stay awake all night , I don't want to take stimulants to help me to do it , and I adore and enjoy going to bed , to sleep and do other things.

I can hear good music within normal hours thank you very much.

What really makes me angry is nighter people always having a go or needing a reason why I don't do it and me having to give an explanation why

I just don't want to do them simples god is it ever going to stop raining !

I think it's now an established fact that there are too many venues, and too many D.J.'s ......but would we rather have a closed shop with a handful of venues and a handful of D.J.'s/promoters controlling everything, with banning orders dished out to those who dissent against those in charge, how do we achieve a happy medium?

Des

We now have some djs out playing every weekend  , maybe play less folks and keep it fresh, leave the box at home and go and support another event..

Many clubs are every month and struggle to get a crowd, go bi monthly or every qtr then, you will get a better turn out and also stop the night looking stale....

i think blame can be laid at the promoters and DJ's who do start up events for no apparent reason but self-promotion/kudos/ego - and this happening for sure...

but let's not lay all the blame there - there are punters asking these guys (and girls) to start up niters and play the records they want to hear. and if they know these DJs are gonig to play the stuff they want to hear then they will attend. same old records attracting, in the main, the same people...i was DJing at an Allniter recently (liccle small room) - and i found myself in the main room DJing (double-decking) last spot and some-one came and askied if i had any of the "3 before 8". What the fack is that about!! Can't blame the DJ's or Promoters for everything....
