Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 (edited) Hi again, I did quite well with last week's listing so here's another randomly selected bunch of keenly priced 45s from the many spares that I seem to have accumulated since I stopped selling on eBay. I've tried to be fair with the pricing but if anything seems too steep I might be open for a reasonable offer. Payment by PayPal preferred (sent as a gift, please). Cheque also acceptable, PM me for details for both methods of payment. P & P to UK is £1.00 for first 45, 25p per 45 extra for multiple purchases. Overseas please PM me for P & P quote - it'll be as cheap as I can make it! Here goes then: TYRONE DAVIS - JUST MY LUCK (US Columbia) - SOLD (Unplayed ex-shop stock, but it has some paper scuffs from years of storage and a tiny scratch on the opening grooves that looks like it will sound for aboyt 4 revolutions of the disc. Still a bargain, though - and a great record! ) JAMES BROWN - TELL ME WHAT YOU'RE GONNA DO (US King DEMO) - SOLD (Uproarious old West Hampstead favourite with a relentless groove! Few light marks on vinyl and some light WOL on label. Perenially top tune...) GENE CHANDLER - SUCH A PRETTY THING (US Checker) - £10.00 M- (Still gorgeous Chi-Town floater with awesome ballad "I Fooled You This Time" on flip. Esstential double header. DH through labels but not through song titles) RARE PLEASURE - LET ME DOWN EASY (US Cheri) - ON HOLD (Quite a few marks and scuffs on this classic of New York 70s disco, but fine for playing out and not that bad for home use either) BUNNY SIGLER - GREAT BIG LIAR/WHERE DO THE LONELY GO (US Neptune) - SOLD (Two of my favourite - and the best - pre-PIR productions of Gamble & Huff on the same 45! Beautiful condition Monarch styrene pressing, sounds as crystal clear now as it did when it first made its way into my house almost 40 years ago...) VERNON GARRETT - IF I COULD TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME (US Modern DEMO) SOLD (I was sold this - for considerably more than £6.00 - by a shyster eBayer who claimed it was M-! Does play better than it looks, perfect for DJ'ing with as they say...) THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH - THE GIRL'S ALRIGHT WITH ME (US Gordy) £8.00 EX++ (Great early 70s version, not far short of the Temptations original in terms of musical quality, and far better to dance to!) THE PRESIDENTS - IT'S ALL OVER NOW/THE SWEETEST THING THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN (US Sussex) £6.00 EX (Gorgeous midtempo Van McCoy magic on both sides - "Sweetest Thing" has the same backing track as Chris Bartley's version on Vando. DH through labels, but not through label copy!) VELVET HAMMER - HAPPY/PARTY HARDY (US Soozi) £30.00 EX (Sells for more than £30.00 of course, I've just had it hanging round so long that I feel I ought to be charging it rent. Has a surface mark on 'Happy' that does not sound and does not affect play in any way). MIGHTY RYEDERS - THE MIGHTY RIDERS (US Sun-Glo) £20.00 EX (Same comments as Velvet Hammer, really, except that it doesn't have a surface mark - oh, hang on a minute, I've just checked - it does (pauses for a needledrop) and it doesn't sound, either...) THE VISITORS - MY LOVE IS READY AND WAITING/WHAT ABOUT ME (US Tangerine) SOLD (A very nice copy with a few light surface marks, the usual crap Tangerine pressing quality and the inevitable blob of gold paint on both labels! Still a bargain at this price...) JO ARMSTEAD - WON'T YOU JOIN THE BAND/GOT MY TASTE (US Preacher Rose) £12.00 M (This went right away last week, and I had several enquiries after it had gone before I had a chance to mark it as 'sold'. Found another copy lurking in the back of a box that I hadn't been through for a while, but I definitely don't have any more after this - or, at least, I don't think I do!!! Beautiful 70s ballad from Jo's unreleased Gospel Truth album, issued on 45 by the lady herself in the late 80s for the first time!) GATEWAY - CAN'T ACCEPT THE FACT (US Columbia DEMO) £30.00 EX++ (Still hard to find mid 70s Philly dancer, allegedly with Evelyn Champagne King in the vocal lineup. 2 ight marks on the mono side which don't sound, otherwise perfect!) NINA SIMONE - AIN'T GOT NO - I GOT LIFE (US RCA) ON HOLD (TOTALLY DIFFERENT to the version on UK RCA - this is a recut for the US market , made after it was a hit here, with a lot of extra instrumentation, girl backing vocals and some different vocals by Nina. Not anywhere near as well known as the UK hit version, in fact most people I've ever played it to had no idea it existed!) LITTLE BUSTER - LOOKIN' FOR A HOME (Jamaican Jubilee) £10.00 EX (The printed word fails to do justice to this most stunning deep soul classic, a copy of which should be in the collection of anyone who keeps records for their quality rather than merely for their tempo. Even on a late 60s Jamaican pressing ('distributed by Studio One') it sounds sublime. Far and away the best soul record that I'm selling this week - ask Mr. Hampsey or Mr. Plumb if you don't believe me...) ERNEST WILSON - LET TRUE LOVE BE (Jamaican Wildflower) £15.00 EX (Highly obscure mid 70s low-to-msitempo soul record from one of the greatest voices in vintage Jamaican music. Not quite a dancer but a good buy for anyone who collects obscure 70s/crossover soul from outside of America!) ...and a few UK pressings to finish up: ROOSEVELT GRIER/LA VERN BAKER - IN MY TENEMENT/WRAPPED, TIED ETC (UK HORACES) SOLD (Unplayed ex-shop stock. Enough said, really...) JAMES BROWN - COLD SWEAT (UK PYE INTERNATIONAL) £20.00 M (Absolutely mint copy of one of the 20 greatest records of all time - never been near a turntable by the look of things, and still in its original blue UK Pye sleeve with the number written on the corner. Sadly I can't do it at 1967 prices, but it's a steal even at twenty quid!) DYKE AND THE BLAZERS - FUNKY BROADWAY (UK PYE INTERNATIONAL) £20.00 EX++ (Difficult one to find on UK - can't have sold very many in competition with Pickett's cover - and a bona fide funky soul classic to boot!) MIGHTY SAM - FANNIE MAE/BADMOUTHIN' (UK STATESIDE 'SOUL SUPPLY') £10.00 EX++ NOC (Two brilliant sides, recorded at FAME Studios with the great Mk.II band. Shame some twat pushed the centre out, but in my defence I was a lot younger and more prone to daftness when I bought this copy 40-odd years ago:lol: ....) JIMMY HOLIDAY AND CLYDIE KING - READY, WILLING AND ABLE/WE GOT A GOOD THING GOING (UK LIBERTY 'SOUL SUPPLY') £6.00 VGish (Lotsa marks on both sides, but both play well, too and while it might not be a 'keeper' copy it's good enough until one of those comes along...) HOMER BANKS - HOOKED BY LOVE (UK LIBERTY 'SOUL SUPPLY') £40.00 EX++ (I've been this copy's one and only owner for more than 40 years, so I can personally attest to how well it has been looked after and treasured. Fantastic Memphis dancer from the Wheel era and you'll be hard pressed to find a better or cheaper copy! EDDIE JEFFERSON - SOME OTHER TIME (UK STATESIDE 'SOUL SUPPLY' DEMO) £30.00 EX++ (Looks like it's never been played - and probably hasn't - but it does have some storage marks from years of living in a polylined cardboard sleeve in a record library. Brilliant midtempo Memphis soul from Goldwax, with what sounds like James Carr on backing vocals (not infeasible by any stretch of the imagination...) That's all for this week - you know where and how to find me if anything interests you! Cheers, TONY Edited July 18, 2010 by TONY ROUNCE
