Pete S Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 This is off a UK Doctor Bird 45 and I know I sold it to someone on here and I think I remember who...not saying this is great or anything but that there's a lot of this sort of thing waiting around to be found
Guest dundeedavie Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 thats nice that .......i've been casually looking for ....lloyd and glen " mini skirt and go-go" boots for a while .....love the sound of this kinda stuff Davie
pikeys dog Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Too Jamaican for my taste.... it's the horns that put me off.... Not a terrible sound though...
Guest Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Wait a minute though, this isn't Soul, I've listened to many, many things similar at "Blues" clubs in Sheffield for the last 25 years ....it's easy on the ear but i would never wish to play or...buy such things.......Look i'm not having a go here....but this is a Soul Forum....not a Rocksteady/Bluebeat etc site.

Guest rachel Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 It's undeniably Northern Soul Brett... link Can see where you're coming from with this, quite an 'early soul' beat/ feel to it.. wouldn't play/ want to hear it though, not because of the Jamaican sound but cos it's, erm, dull
Craig W Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Not bad at all Pete in fact very nice , would probably sound better with a few listens. By the way I'll put up a soundfile of that Starline 45 I played to you down the phone a couple of weeks ago which you reckoned could be played at a soul night and see what everyone thinks.

Put a sound file of Glen Miller up "Where is the love" or Phylis Dixon "Make me yours"....see what happens!?

Pete S Posted July 27, 2005 Author Posted July 27, 2005 There was a white label Jamaican soul thing about a few years ago, think it was called "More than words can say"?, any ideas Pete? link I'm doing this project where I'm putting every single track I've got on cd, 45 and Lp onto the pc then I'm going to transfer them to dvd and flog them, obviously, but the last one I did (with that last track on) also had the Glen Miller and Phyllis Dillon tracks on so if you really want them putting up, no problem. Don't know the track you mentioned, sorry
Chalky Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 easy on the ear and pleasant enough, but that's as far as I'd go.

Guest Doctor Bird Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 (edited) He had another great double sider that came out on UK High Note/ JA Bronco Bobby Sox To Stockings/ Lucky Is The Boy (one Rock Steady, one Soul), nice voice for a keyboard player who hit the UK Charts with Elizabethan Reggae nice one. Hope it's rare coz I paid bucks for this! turned up twice on Ebay this year, but like most of the original jamaican vinyl both singles were in terrible condition Edited July 27, 2005 by Doctor Bird

Guest Dan Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 not a big fan of ska, having grown up in the era when every other dickhead was wearing a pork pie hat and a harrington but some of this stuff is brilliant agree with brett, not sure if it's northern soul i'd love to find a bar where they were playing this sort of stuff, great drinking music IMO

Also, is anyone aware of the Warren Schatz original of "Soon Everything Is Gonna Be Alright" (covered by Third Time Around)? A JM list from 1985 claims Schatz's version was only ever issued in Jamaica, on the Wild Flower label. Is that right? Gene Edited July 28, 2005 by Gene-R
Pete S Posted July 28, 2005 Author Posted July 28, 2005 There's another JA white label mid-tempo 45 doing the rounds - "I Love You" by Lloyd Robinson. Gene link Wonder if thats the one I mentioned above Gene. Actually no, thats rubbish, my one was by Lloyd Richards who is actually 'Richard Ace'. I've got all Lloyd Robinsons JA releases (discography) in front of me and nothing with that title - I've got an I Need Your Love, thats the nearest I can get.
Pete S Posted July 28, 2005 Author Posted July 28, 2005 NICE TUNE. PETE, HAVE YOU HEARD A TRACK OFF LEW KIRTONS " JUST ARRIVED " LP CALLED " ISLAND GIRL ", RIGHT UP YOUR STREET.IF SOME KIND SOUL COULD PUT A SOUND BITE UP. link No I haven't heard that Andy - 70's?

Worth mentioning that "Need Your Love" is actually not a bad calypso/soul cut in itself. Wonder what the correct title is for this mysterious Lloyd Robinson white label? Had a snippet of it on a sales tape from Johnny Fingers a few years ago, and it's either late 60s, or even crossover to the early 70s. Any clues? Wonder if it is actually Lloyd Robinson, give that the credits were probably handwritten? BTW Pete - another mid-tempo JA track comes to mind - "Land of Imagination" by Prince Buster on Blue Beat (the B-side of "The Appeal"). Have you heard it? Gene Edited July 28, 2005 by Gene-R
