2011-03-10: The Prestatyn Weekender - March 10th - 14th 2011 magazine cover

A highlight of the upcoming Prestayn Weekender thread, not just who's going but full of artist news, articles info and history on the various rooms/clubs/nighters etc

Here's Andy Dyson words on Lifeline Allnighters who are let loose on the Friday night in arena 2

LIFELINE - 70's SPECIAL ALL-NITER @ PRESTATYN - Friday Night - ARENA 2

During the turn of the millennium the Northern Soul scene's ability to survive and thrive in a period of general instability nationwide is unquestionable and testament to it's versatility! Although the very grass roots of traditionalism remains deeply ingrained musically and socially, the scene has never seen such diversity - northern, R&B, modern all neatly engraved on the soul scene's milestone. We have over forty years worth of fabulous black music to choose from, so much so that the three main categories are partitioned into countless sub styles - all with their own varying levels of success. The upfront/cutting edge style, I firmly believe to be the most difficult of them all to work, stabilize and maintain with any kind of longevity. Many scenarios' manipulate and govern the amount of bodies through any venue door, the current financial climate, average age of punter etc. Not to mention in Lifeline's case in particular the high level of quality music expected at every single all-nighter with very little, if not any room for compromise. These hurdles of course are only cleared due to the unique entertainment package that Lifeline provides.

Towards the end of the 90's and certainly early 2000,the upfront side of our scene really was in the worst shape that I could remember - A million and one soul nights and maybe a few less all-nighters, predominantly playing the standard oldies playlists. It's fair to say that even the so-called forward thinking venues really were just going through the proverbial motions. Everyone that I spoke to certainly felt the same way, but nothing was being done to sort the situation - for the increasing numbers of despondent souls. I'd mentioned to Mick H during one of his events at the Union Club (Nottingham) about teaming up and giving an all-nighter a go, Mick was up for it. So the foundations were laid, a blinder of a venue found and a crack team of residents booked.

The year was 2004 and what can only be described as one of the ultimate all-nighter venues of all time, Sheridan's, Ravensthorpe near Dewsbury...down home, dirty and dingy and run by Chris and Rodz a great couple who ran the venue for soul promotions only...Now that makes a change! The month was February and a virtual lockout for the first event, over 300 people turned out and everyone had a whale of a time - the promotion name Lifeline did exactly what it said on the tin and then some!

The resident team has stayed consistent to the present day in the form of Butch, Soul Sam, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Cliff Steele, Chalky and more recently Rob Smith also many guests who are all at the top of their game including - Tim (Tiny Tail) Brown, Kitch, Dean Anderson, Dave Thorley, Alex Jones, Ady Pountain, Andy Whitmore, Dave Welding, Marco, Arthur Fenn and many more. As well as the seasoned and experienced guys the early hours are allocated to up and coming dj's and some long term hoarders of vinyl, namely Nick Stevenson (Lifeline's first ever DJ), G. Mahood, Killa, Kev Murphy, Kev Featherstone, Dawn Carmen, Nicola Anderson, Marc Forrest - the list goes on!

The road has definitely been a rocky one, when Sheridan's closed its doors Lifeline became the Romany's of the scene. The Fox at Colsterworth, a decent venue off the A1 motorway, but happen it was better suited to the swinging and wife swap nights that were hosted there. Rumour has it Tim Brown was a regular there on his way to various natural history museums... Next venue was to be Ye Olde Bell at Barnby Moor, rather a splendid building steeped in history. We had some great times there including a couple of weekenders 2006 and 2007 that people still talk about today. The powers that be decided on a multi million pound refit and that's when we had to leave, the management never did quite take to staying up all night especially when was Mick H DJ'ing!

This very nearly was the end of the road for Lifeline, we had no venue and nowhere to go, Chris Waterman kindly got us the Stables - junction 11 club which has been the real making of Lifeline. The club boasts a fabulous dance floor, balcony and all-night bar and in our opinion the best 60's, 70's and 80's upfront black music policy on the planet!

We run bi-monthly and get 250 to 300 in at every one; if you fancy a safe and friendly night out we'll see you there.

Friday night promises to be a quality night of music in the modern room, I can't wait to hear Jesse James perform live then the Lifeline team will prove it's versatility with our very own brand of quality 70's upfront soul with I dare say some classics from the genre to complete the nights entertainment.

See you all in there.

Andy Dyson.

If you didn't know, it's our 10TH ANNIVERSARY !! and to celebrate the landmark we have some VERY special live acts already confirmed from a 'Modern' perspective. JESSE JAMES and COOL MILLION are already set to appear live in concert.

Format wise we've listened very carefully to feedback from our last event in March and have implemented a few exciting changes to the structuring of the 'Modern Soul' rooms which I hope will be well received.

The 'House Of Soul' on Friday night will host a brand new contemporary soul session, mixed in with the cream of 90's and Y2K steppers for the entire evening, while Saturday night will feature the usual Friday night 70's session now moved to the Saturday, which should provide the perfect partner for the Carl & Maria Suite next door. The afternoon sessions will remain unchanged with last years hugely popular Jazz Dance bop on the Saturday, plus the established 'Kings Of Crossover' showcase on the Sunday.

In the main 'Modern Soul' room - home to our live shows including JESSE JAMES & COOL MILLION - Friday night will see a huge 70's / 80's special take place with all the top indie and major label soul cuts featured on probably the best sound system you'll hear at a weekender anywhere. Crystal clear sound at just the right levels, all controlled by the highly skilled guys on the mixing desk.

After the JESSE JAMES concert and from Midnight onwards we'll be holding a LIFELINE - 70'S SOUL special in the room with all your favourite dj's including BUTCH, SOUL SAM, CLIFF STEELE, MICK H and ANDY DYSON taking proceedings through to the close.

Saturday evening will feature a storming CLUB CLASSICS & SOULFUL HOUSE SPECIAL running continuously through until the early hours of Sunday morning. With the dancers amongst you likely to see some serious dancefloor hours racked up : - ))

Sunday night of course will feature our usual PARTY ANTHEMS FINALE to send you all home happy with hopefully a surprise addition to the nights schedule TBC. Lets just say - if you can try and stay for the Sunday night, it'll be worth your while - so book that Monday off work now with the boss !!

IT'S BEEN A PLEASURE TO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH PRESTATYN OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS AND COUNTING - A TRULY UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL EVENT.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OVER THAT TIME.

By now you will be familiar with the fantastic line up for the upcoming Legends Weekender in October with Tavares The Velvelettes and now the recently added Dean Parrish it has the makings of an incredible weekend and so now is a good time to look forward to The Midnight Hour Weekender next March.

March 2011 signals the arrival of a massive landmark for us in that it will be the 10th Anniversary of The Midnight Hour Weekenders in Prestatyn.

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years but it was in 2002 that Ray Pollard and Tony Middleton came over to perform at our first event.

Since then we have been able to welcome many more legendary artists to perform at the event, some making their first UK appearances and others returning to these shores eager to excite British audiences again.

So after many hours of discussion the Midnight Hour Team have decided that for the 10th Anniversary it would be fitting to bring back some of the artists that have played their part in making the events so special over these last 10 years and join in the celebrations with us.

At present we are still working on the final line up but we are delighted to confirm that from our 2009 event we will welcome back The Volumes/Magnetics for their second UK appearance.

Also from the same year the fabulous Benny Troy joins us again and this time it won’t just be for one song.

From our 2005 showcase it is an honour to welcome back the legendary Lorraine Chandler who will be belting out her Northern Anthems and staying with the Detroit connection from 2006 Billy Prince from the Precisions will be gracing the stage once more.

The line up is still very much a work in progress at this moment in time and we are currently working on giving another legend their Prestatyn debut ( we will of course publish the details through our website http://www.soul-weekenders.co.uk as soon as we get confirmation) also as you all know by now there will be a few surprises as well, and all will be backed by our great Midnight Hour Soul Band and backing singers.

As always our artists are on site all weekend and always welcome the chance to chat and experience the welcome they receive from their UK fans.

The weekend is not just about the incredible shows that we have each year, we have a great team of dj’s who provide the backbone of our event in 5 action packed arenas.

Over the years we have come up with a number of original ideas about the format and many of these, such as the Soul Night Showcases and the pre event Thursday party have now been adopted by others and variety is now a common thread in present day weekenders.

SOUL PEOPLE @ PRESTATYN - Saturday Afternoon - ARENA 2.

Soul People came about when Steve Jeffries and myself were having a chin-wag about wouldn't it be great if there was a radio show that played cutting edge rare and underplayed modern and crossover music which is of the highest quality. 2 YEARS LATER Soul People has now become an established weekly radio show on Solar radio every Sunday morning from 10 am - 12 noon, where the cream of the UK and European Djs play the best in high quality modern soul music, so much so it is now the most popular show on Solar radio, not bad for a specialist show.

We have now established Soul People nights up and down the country where they sell out wherever we go and have become a massive success, this is not only down to the Djs but you the people or in this case Soul People who make the atmosphere of these nights such a success, we have nights this year lined up in Doncaster, Preston and Scotland - a little road tour to show our appreciation of all the help we get from you.

We are looking forward to coming to play our style of cutting edge modern soul music at the mighty 10th Anniversary Prestatyn Weekender, all our Djs are up for this big time, where we will be in the big modern room on the Saturday Showcase from 1pm - 6pm. Djs on the day are Steve Guarnori, Soul Sam, Steve Jeffries, Steve Plumb and myself Kenny Mac. What you will hear on the day will be a reflection of our weekly radio show of the highest quality in rare and underplayed cutting edge modern soul, hope you all enjoy and look forward to meeting you there.

Kenny Mac.

There was a great new room at the October event - it was basically part of the restaurant partitioned off!

Hope it's being used again

Lighting and decor were fantastic, sound system great

smallish but decent dancefloor

and doors leading straight outside for the smokers!

Sure it was Without Boundaries?!?!?!?

Sam's spots in there were awesome

Best room going for us!

Spot on about Sam's spots. Awesome room.

Dance floor was a little small but whole room had a wooden floor so no probs.

Understand that for March there will be a new entrance.

Room also had plenty of sound insulation so very little carried into main room or vice versa.

The "restaurant" has also had a bit of a makeover, although by Pontin's standards it's probably classed as a major rebuild!!!
