Guest son of stan Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Anyone else a fan of this great, soulful UK band from the 70s? Both of their LPs are great. Terrific versions of, "I Can Understand It," and "Angel", amongst others.. Just thought I'd big them up. Now watch this thread sink like a stone! Peace.

Sometimes deliciously smooth, sometimes quite funky. Miid-1970's I had just moved in with a girlfriend for the first time and she was buying stuff like Kokomo, Little Feat, early Robert Palmer etc. etc. Crikey - that's taken me to a place I haven't been for many years. They were the support act for Bobby Womack on his first ever UK appearance - Hammersmith Odeon - March 6 1976 - which I was lucky enough to attend - seem to remember they were pretty good, Mike

I walked out well before the end of the show, one of only about a dozen gigs that I've left before the end for some reason other than to catch the last train or bus... ...my hero worshipping of Womack came to an end that day, never to return. I still play "I'm Sorry Babe" on a fairly regular basis, one of the best Britfunk records of the time IMO. Edited July 6, 2010 by TONY ROUNCE
Djmelismo Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Now watch this thread sink like a stone! It won´t, here´s another post bringing the thread back up to the top of the page again. I love this group too, definitely one of the finest soul-funk groups to come out of the UK. I revisit their albums from time to time, and a special favourite for me too of course is their wonderful rendition of the "Angel" classic. I actually thought they released three albums (the first AND the last one being selftitled?!), but not 100% sure and cannot check right now because my record collection is in a bit of a disarray at the moment. Best, Melismo

Overlong ? - It was a very short set and are you sure about Ronnie Wood ? - it was Ian McLagan from the Faces. Charles Fullilove was his lead lead player back then and yes plenty of 'licks' traded but that was expected - he wasn't the typical soul man - was he ever ? Pretty much reflected his recorded material back then to me - 'Facts Of Life' etc ... Mike

I was mixing it up with another overlong gig I attended a couple of years previously by Ronnie Wood, at the Kilburn State (supported by Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers), which was so dull that I remember almost nothing else about it , apart from the fact that Rod Stewart appeared about half way through it to sing "If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody"... It might have seemed like Womack played a short set to you but, believe me, it was interminable. Or perhaps you're only remembering the good parts, and that's why it seemed short? What I do know is that the three big Womack fans that i went with were all disappointed, too.
Guest son of stan Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 (edited) Thanks fellas. I believe they did abortive sessions with Bob Dylan. Would be interesting to hear those. (BTW Many years ago, I once stood next to Bobby Womack at a urinal. I didn't say anything but he seemed in a funny mood and deliberately bumped into me and then sort of tried to pick a fight with me. I assume he was on drugs or something. Still love his records though..) Edited July 9, 2010 by son of stan
