I first became aware of this tune around 4 or 5 years ago and have heard it on and off since then on various radio shows.

But - I don't ever recall hearing it played out anywhere, no doubt it will have been somewhere though.

So can anyone tell me if it was ever played anywhere in the past, maybe something like the rare groove scene perhaps?

I played it at Arties Mill, Sailmakers and Winter Gardens modern room John. Went well with Bobby Womack 'Give It Up', then that, then Esther Phillips 'Changin' (or it did at the time anyway! )

No doubt many other places as well?....

Did get a bit of play back in the mid to late 80's on the modern and rare groove scenes. Lovely track that deserves to be played out more, always pick up the album when I see it, must have a few in stock, we tend to sell it at £10 and worth every penny for that track alone.

aye up Bri hope you're well, it was probably more than 6 years ago now i'd think as we left Montpelier nearly 5 years ago. That would have been a CD I made for Kath and Jez years back that they copied for you guys up in Barnsley, 'Montpelier Ballrooms' was our top floor flat on Montpelier Road in Brighton, the scene of many late night parties back then. We had one where our long suffering neighbours downstairs asked us if we could calm it down a bit, so we said "oh, is the music too loud", and they said "it's not the music, it's just that all the pictures have fallen off the wall in the front room" lol

I used to play the track out almost every week when I had a residency down here with Derek Jack under the name 'soulcitizens' as well as various guest spots. Although most of her material is pretty bland for me, there are a couple of her other albums after that one that are one-trackers and have really nice steppers on, you can pick them up for peanuts. 'We're gonna make it' is great, b-side to 'Never can say goodbye' if i remember, probably set you back at least £3.

Glad you liked the cd, it's all about sharing the music IMO, catch up for a beer next time i'm in the socialist republic of south yorkshire fella,

"We Just Can't Make It" is the title Paul and you're right, its always been a goodie.

GG has a couple of other great 'B' sides I used to play back in the day.

"Searching" is a scorcher on the flip of "Reach Out I'll Be There" and on the flip of "How High The Moon" is the fabulous "My Man's Gone".

Great singer Gloria, that more often than not suffered from having to deliver dreadful material.

Thoroughly reccommend all three of these tracks though!

"This love affair" is on the album "Park avenue sound" - I don't think it's hard to come by, nor particulary expensive?

AH YES IT ALL COMES BACK TO ME NOW THE MONTPELIER CD WAS RESIDENT IN MY CD PLAYER FOR WELL OVER A YEAR AND I THINK I GOT A BIT OBSESSED WITH IT TRYING TO LOCATE ALL OF THE TRACKS IN ORIGINAL FORMAT. IT'S A GOOD JOB JEZ DIDN'T SHARE ANY MORE OF YOUR COMPILATIONS WITH US AS I BE EVEN SKINTER THAN I ALREADY AM.
