Simsy Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Yes clapping again. Talking about during the record, not at the end. At the Fleet in the early 80's clapping was widespread. There were obscure claps, like in 'They'll never know why' that only the cool clappers knew about. These days clapping is muted, pretty much all over the country. Was this an integral part of 'the feeling' that made the record/atmos/night that extra bit special? Or are they like beer towels now? Oh the shame ...
Simsy Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 Chalky, now I know you don't like clapping, I will do it all the more... Thanks for the inspiration, round of applause infact..
Popular Post NEILO Posted June 29, 2010 Popular Post Posted June 29, 2010 I always clap during the tune. Always have and always will. It's an integral part of my dancing & I have many friends on the scene who are the same. 6

Kids of today, they just don't know how to do it - or even care about it. When you got 500 people clapping on the offbeat, it was incredible. I used to love clapping, doing it and listening to it, even now when I hear those old Wigan tapes, the clapping makes the hair stand up. 11
Popular Post Ian Seaman Posted June 29, 2010 Popular Post Posted June 29, 2010 yep have to agree with Pete, an integral part of the scene in the day, i still do it now and try and get others going. Reminds of once when i was a passenger in a car driving to Chamonix to go snowboarding and it was about 3am and we were listening to an old NS tape/CD (can't remember which !) and as the track playing hit a break i slammed my hands together outstretched and started to clap, well my mate driving shit himself and swerved all over the fooking road at 95mph and nearly lost it bigtime and went mad at me for almost giving him a heart attack Ian. 4
Simsy Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 We don't get 500 people clapping in unison these days though, not even at Stoke. Also recent and semi recent discoveries don't seem to have claps attached to them?

I used to love clapping, doing it and listening to it, even now when I hear those old Wigan tapes, the clapping makes the hair stand up. I think if the truth be known most of the Northernsoul scene is now made up of born again fibbers who wouldn't know where to clap if their lives depended on it! Can any one remember the chap at Bradford who used to clap louder than humanly possible, I think it was like his super power or some thing? We used to call him "The phantom clapper", he would clap behind you making you quite startle as it sounded like a bleedin gun bien fired! 3
KevH Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Seem to remember a thread about this a couple of years back, quite a lenghty and interesting thread.

KevH Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I remember it, may have started it, but you can't whack a good poll for what folk really think. :thumbsup:I'm a clapper btw.
Guest Mark Holmes Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Hard to imagine I Walked Away or Don't Depend on Me without a clap or even a muted clap in a room not that they would get played much but you know what I mean. Like Pete says it makes yer hair stand up. I'm a clapper.
Simsy Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 I think it may be fair to say that whilst some 'clapper' records may be out of vogue, some others are not; I'm thinking Checkerboard Squares v Patrinell Staten?
Citizen P Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Nowt wrong with a good solid Crrrrrack in the right place. Done correctly it adds a little something doncherthink?? Tony
Guest Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I love to clap Usually when i feel like it and not just cause theres a gap that a clap might fill....

Steve L Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Hi my name is steve and I'm a clapper There i've said it:ph34r: 2
Simsy Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 So based on results so far we still love the clap! So why are we so timid about it these days? We're proud clappers to a man/woman, sure. Majority of us will remember the 100+ unison crack at a certain point 20 something years ago and there just isn't the ferocity these days is there? I've never heard clapping at Lifeline for example, which is no slight on that event, it's a top event. But it highlights my point on how perhaps this element has drifted?

Interesting - and possibly the only place where this topic could be discussed ha. Well I for one am a clapper, and I reckon that goes for the rest of Australia - just carried on where we left off probably and haven't had the chance to be influenced. Is it like sewing patches on yer vest these days or summat? Clappers rennaissance society anyone? Cheers Pete www.perthsoul.com

funkyfeet Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Remember getting home from the Casino, banged on my Gloria Jones "Tainted Love" which I just bought and thought I'd been done with another version then realised it was missing the thunderous clapping of the Casino hoards. 1
Ian Parker Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Im not a clapper ................because my hands are too busy doing other things when dancing Debbie x

That sounded awsome with the claps at Wigan - Sir Richard Searling spin.
Wayoutgirl Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 "Who gives a clap??" Each to their own I would still clap if and when appropriate (Just wouldn't do it like on the soulboy trailer)

Guest rosies dad Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 i used to have the habit of snapping my fingers while dancing..after an evening dancing (and snapping) for 4 hours i couldnt snap anymore as i had blisters on both thumbs and middle fingers...ow
Guest Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 We get a few clappers me included at Rugby in the last hour,Simsy wouldnt know though
Kevinkent Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 It's a bonding thing. You've never truly bonded if you don't have the clap. It's the dancehall equivalent of a chant from the football terrace. Chinstroking in the dug-out, or at one with the crowd and the play? I know where I'd rather be.
Guest Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I have missed it clapping also to think of it you dont here it much of it at all nowadays which is a real shame just got back from Brid and didint here much clapping there which is a real shame:(
Guest Matt Male Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 (edited) I still clap. Never been ashamed or afraid to clap. Needs to be another poll option: I don't think clapping has gone away. Edited June 29, 2010 by Matt Male
Simsy Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 I still clap. Never been ashamed or afraid to clap. Needs to be another poll option: I don't think clapping has gone away. 'Muted' was the term used. Yeah there is still clapping, here and there in a halfhearted half arsed sort of way. Nothing like it used to be though.
Pete S Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Has that tape got Toni Basil on it? That sounded awsome with the claps at Wigan - Sir Richard Searling spin. No, it would be almost 3 years before Tony Basil first got played, it broke on the East Coast before it got to Wigan late 77
Chalky Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Thanks for the inspiration, round of applause infact.. just to put the record straight I've never said I don't like clapping, I made a reference to the fact when someone said the clapping was shite in the new film I said that they can't clap these days. Like Pete says, 500 dancers clapping inn unison makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up. Trouble is nowadays especially to newer stuff they don't know where to clap...or like Pete says how. Hardly hear any clapping anywhere nowadays although I was clapping behind the decks Saturday
Guest Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 No, it would be almost 3 years before Tony Basil first got played, it broke on the East Coast before it got to Wigan late 77 Whilst doing various things on t'computer ( I do stuff besides SS believe it or not ) , and have had a CD of various old tunes playing whilst I tickled the keyboard . One of the tunes was Bernie Williams' " Ever Again " , to which I automatically clapped in the appropriate places ..... albeit one handed on my thigh . Old habits do die hard Malc

Nothing like it used to be though. Yes i'd agree, not like it was at Wigan and in the past, but then everyone just clapped through every bloody record. I prefer the more select clapping that goes on thesedays. The sniper's approach to clapping instead of a shotgun.

Steve Csordas is fookin deafening, but ace Us girls in the SSLAAS have been actively championing a clapping revival since one of our number was asked to STOP CLAPPING while dancing by a very rude woman at a soul event. Seems there's even a bloody clapping police these days I'm gonna repossess the key to my clappiness... 2
