I like this, Many Thanks for Posting it Dante

I haven't seen it much over the 41 years of collecting, In fact seen very few Sue 45s in Second Hand Shops etc, Probably Stuck In Collections.

A very popular Collectors Label from the Early Days.

I think it still is popular amongst collectors, specially in the mod scene, because of the Guy Stevens connection and, of course, the quality of the output...

I always though Action was set up by John Abbey in1968 and distributed by island records, Sue was an island subsidury.

Didn't think they had any other connection.

Not quite right - Action was set up as a replacement for Sue by Island/B&C in 1968, and John Abbey was hired to A&R the label (as he later was with Mojo, by Polydor).

I recall asking John, in the late 60s, why the change had occurred. Apparently Island were no longer able to use the Sue logo for copyright reasons, and they were thinking of going with a more contemporary image for their R & B label anyway - hence Action was born.

I was also a member of the Sue Appreciation Society late in its life and I distinctly remember getting a letter from the society secretary (also called Sue, apparently) to say that there would be no more Sue releases and that Action would be taking over from it as a label.

Although there's nothing to connect them numerically, there's no overlap between the last Sue releases and the first ones on Action, and I think that it's fair and proper to consider Action to be a true continuation of UK Sue

Tony

am I not right in thinking that John was A&R for Sue in it's last year or so, with Guy first of all getting into rock and then also going to jail for a while?

That's also correct. Obviously your jetlag has worn off before mine has!

As a matter of interest it is a common misconception that the black bar on a Sue label denotes a demo . This is not the case , this where Sue had preprinted the labels with the words Sue records , however when they lost the deal with american Sue and they were taking releases from other labels they used up the preprinted ones but blanked out the bit that said Sue records.

hatsoff2.gif Hi All....Yes correct the BLACK BAR does not indicate that it's a DEMO, it's just blocking out the SUE USA RECORDING. Some ISLAND/SUE had a 3/6d stamp to indicate DJ COPY! Heres a Island catalog from 1966
