There are a few Scooterists within our SS membership who know of mysterious fires sparking at a few scooter tuner's premises usually just before they where to go bankrupt or out of business, any similarities?

Some say it was the Imber crowd? I have no comment on that.

The theory is that the fire was the result of a smoldering Capstan full - strength tab end , accidentally dropped by Hilda Woods towards the end of her shift that night / morning .

The night had been a particularly one , so busy that she had to help out doormen on occasions by shouting " stop pushing at the back " .

As the mayhem of the incoming subsided , she took a break and lit up the stated cigarette , drawing heavily on the rolled up leaves of nicotine . She had almost finished , when a bright eyed young lad from Warrington came to the cash desk and asked her if she could change a five pound note , as he wanted to buy medicine .

She placed the tab end on the edge of the counter , and proceeded to exchange the paper currency into coins of the realm . Unbeknown to her, the remains of the lit cigarette fell onto the floor , and rolled under the counter where it smouldered in the layers of gathered dust which had been there since the venue opened , which eventually combusted

producing the inferno that engulfed the building .

i reckon that it was burnt to the ground when someone found out that the entire spark/pye disco demand/casino classics back catalogues were being housed in a back room, if this is true i think we owe a debt of gratitude to the arsonist:D

BTW when ever I see that photo with the piano on the stage 2 questions rattle round my nugget ;

1. Where is the little room at the left hand side of the stage where we used to talk records / next week / cover ups / etc etc etc ........... Was it really there ?

2. Who painted the back wall brilliant white ???..........Where is the smoke damage , nicotine stains & "I'm a Riker Liker " grafitti ????????????????

You are so right in your explanation although the make of cigarette is not quite correct. It was in fact a Regal. I have that very tab end along with two pieces of the dance floor (still has some talcum powder on and remnants of a meat and potato pie on one piece only... does not affect dancing!). Was thinking about putting them on e-Bay. Do you reckon about the £12k region... seems realistic to me maybe going down to £10k in the economic climate?

We are right on both counts : Hilda smoked both Regal and Capstan full - strength .

She liked to smoke Regal during the hectic punter admittance times ( once recorded as being a ratio of one cigarette to every 27 patrons ) , and the CFS afterwards , as she considered that the more mature leaves of the CFS contained within the cigarette paper , more helpful in her relaxing and restorng her karma .

Hilda's CFS and Regal tabs turn up from time to time at memorabilia fairs and on eBay . The CFS go for £60 - £70 each , whilst the Regal £35 - £40 . If they bear the stains of her lipstick - Max Factor " Hindley Blush " - add a further £20 to the price tag .

In respect of your sections of dance floor : On the rare occasions that these prized historical artifacts come up for auction , they are known to cause a frenzy of excitement within the antiques world .

The last section of dance floor still bearing grains of talc went for £8K , but sections that have an piece of meat and

potato pie are now very rare . The last one that came up for sale , had an intact 1/2" x 1/4" piece of Lancashire silverside beef and a piece of Maris Piper potato attached to a piece of pie crust ( including the top edge ) . Its' authenticity was confirmed by global experts prior to the sale following forensic investigation and carbon dating , as being from Blatherwick's pie stall on Wigan indoor market in early 1975 . It was bought by a foreign bidder for £19K .

If the Squad were knocking on the bog door at the time, then I imagine the contents could be worth quite lot - depending on whether they were still in their oringinal packaging, of course!
