Campagnolo 1
Over the years, this 'underground scene' has withstood all that's tried to dilute it. TV pundits, Egocentric Media thirsty DJs, Divvies who dance in clothing 40 years old, youngsters who think dancin' on Duffy videos is gaining them 'street cred', Cassette tapes, CDs, MP3s, Ipods, returnees who instantly become promoters, people who reinvent their personal history, bootleg DJs, the soul police, the vinyl police, the fashion police, the DS, the influx of barbs, the Mod revival, Coronation Street, naff advert and after naff advert on TV, a million new 'record dealers', price guides, carvers, theatrical plays, film extras, yuppie type record collectors, etc etc and none of it has affected me. I still do what I've done for 35 years. I buy records and dance to 'em. Can't see this film making any impression whatsoever on my lifestyle or enjoyment of what I do. It's a peripheral, a distraction for some but irrelevant to me. I'll probably get the DVD off Pete Smith in a year for a fiver and watch it when I've a spare 90 mins but that'll be it. It won't change my life, it won't stir up feelings of protectionism that it does in some. It's a film....like "Finding Nemo" was. That's it. Regards, Dave it wont stir up any feelings of protectionism????it obviously has,Dave??? "Top Rant" ! Especially the "PEOPLE WHO REINVENT THEIR PAST",I seem to meet new ones every wk. I personaly don't remember seeing any 9yr old's down the Wheel in 69.& returnee promoters are a" fukin" nusance aswell.! .As for the Film(play)!,it's o.k.,and yes it does reflect the time very well, when everybody and his dog got into Soul (Badges ,baggies and all that complete shite)Soul died when Wigan opened(just kiddin??). ooo,it's also got me on my high horse.(46 yrs buyin & still dancin) regards also. Guest
Lady B and I watched the film yesterday afternoon via an unofficial internet site . Anyone who has yet to see it , must do so primed in the knowledge that they are to view a film about teenage youth , which involves Northern Soul , not a film about Northern Soul . The film has its' flaws ( namely the farcical dance off scene towards the end ) , but overall , we found it enjoyable . All credit to the script writing wit who penned the scene in the record bar , between the prospective buyer and the record dealer - " What's new ? " " Nothing , that's the point of it " Malc Link to comment Social source share

cementman
Went to see Soulboy last week in an open air cinema at Joondalup, near Perth, Oz. A local band played Magic carpet ride and a couple ot others before the start of the film. Took an esky with some G and Ts, six pack of Furstenburg, some olives, brie and assorted crackers. Strange, can't remember the movie very well! Actually, watched it with some younger friends some of whom went to the Casino (One DJ'ed there) Nobody took it particularly seriousyl, but all of us enjoyed it in a 'small indie film" way. Funny in parts, bit contrived, but still conveyed the excitement of getting out after a weeks work to do some dancing to good music. More enjoyable than a curates egg but some alcohol, balmy night and good friends can enhance any experience. Overall OK but I wouldn't rush out to buy the DVD ( I'm sure my wife Sue and some of my friends enjoyed it more than I did though) Ronnie Edited December 10, 2010 by cementman Link to comment Social source share
Chalky
Having seen the film it wasn't the waste of 1 hour 20 minutes like some of you make out. It wasn't a masterpiece by any means but I have seen much worse. I'd give it 4 or 5 out of 10 purely on it's entertainment value. Decent soundtrack as well bar the odd one or two. It never was gonna be artistically 100% correct and every film going uses some artistic licence, if you watch an American war film you would think they won WW2 on their own and the Brits and others weren't involved. Yeah sure some bits were cringe worthy, the dance off definitely. Even though the editing of This England was well done why didn't they use the dancers who took time out of their lives to attend filming? Sure there would have been at least a few who would have danced well enough for the film? And did anyone person ever rule a venue like the guy Alan? Sure there was some nasty folk about more than willing to use their fists but not surely one man? Oh and for some reason I thought that Alan looked a bit like a younger Terry Rider Like I've said there are worse ways in your life to spend an hour and half and I've seen worse films on Sky Movies this Christmas than this. Treat it for what it is, a coming of age love story with Northern as a back drop rather than a film about Northern Soul. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Winnie :-)
Have finally got round to watching this, decided to watch it for what it is, a film, and overall I enjoyed it. Godzilla
Watched it last night - with some trepidation it has to be said, although I also secretly hoped it would provide the odd tingle down my spine. Mrs G who never went to Wigan but has been to Keel and the Ritz said she got considerablymore of in idea of what the Casino was like by listening to me and my pals talking about it. As for the principle that it's just a coming of age/love story set in the 70s that just happens to have a northern Soul backdrop, I'll leave the last word to Mrs G too: "it's hardly Gregory's Girl, is it?" Nuff said Link to comment Social source share

Winnie :-) Winnie ,i'm inclined to agree I took it for what it was ....just a movie to entertain the public .Probably a public that did'nt go to wigan ,or have anything to do with "NORTHERN SOUL":D I think it tried to depict a scene from the perspective of a youth back in the 70's ,who were care free ,who just wanted to have some fun ,try something different ,and let's face it ,most people did'nt have a care in the world back then . From a historical point of view ,it was pants .Those who went in 74 (Not me )would be able to pick holes out of the film on all points ,but let's face it ,it was influenced by R.W, who wrote a book about Wigan Casino, that omitted most of what happened from 1974- 1981 I would think the only way to please people who wanted more ,would be to make a proper documentary ,rather than a soppy romance about some very naive teenagers. My biggest problem and the thing what spoilt it for me was ,the scenes regarding the big guy bullying people from the front of the dance floor ,and the stupid dance off for the girl .That was more of an embarrassment than anything . Sure the best dancers hung arounf the stage area ,still do at some places i've been to over the yrs ,but in fairness thier were some great dancers all over the floor at Wigan from what i can remember... ...... the posers were near the stage All in all it achieved what i wanted it to do ,take me back to my youth ..........probably around the same time as well ........................ Interestingly enough, Nev, that's another thing Mrs G said. We taped a 3 part C4 documentary from some years ago called "The Story of Hip Hop" and I swear that even if you weren't into the music you'd find it engrossing viewing. It charts the history and development of Hip Hop and mixes vintage footage with interviews with the movers and shakers on the scene. It also doesn't shy away from the controversies, splits, accusations of 'sell out', credit taking, commercialism and so on. We can watch it over and over and Mrs G remarked straight after watching Soulboy that the Northern scene deserves an equally fitting and serious piece and that nowadays, surely there's sufficient interest from the mainstream as well as those connected to justify such a project. Hey! maybe I should produce a submission to for C4! Who's in? Link to comment Social source share

macca
Aside from the input from artists, Ian Levine's TSWONS project had plenty of 'talking heads' though, didn't it? Some of whom have since passed away, sadly.. All that footage could be gathered up again and updated to include the new century, the European scene, the weekender phenomenon etc, etc. That would be interesting. Just a shame about all the blood-letting that took place (on both sides) over the last year or two, 'cos it's evident that such a project would never get off the ground, given all the fear and loathing there was. Sorry if this is off-topic. Link to comment Social source share

Jules
watched it on dvd last night. Suppose I`ve seen alot worse and less interesting films that cost millions to make. innacurate, yes, especially the portrayal of the casino as I remember it in the mid 70`s. It was v easy to pick out the real dancers from the actors and I dont remember seeing green and whites available , ( I could be wrong there though). would probably be better for kids to watch who have no idea about NS. I gave it 5/10 as It didnt exactly bore the pants off me like most films do. sandra thought it was just a love story and thought it watchable. most dissapointing was there was no ice cream lady at half time. Guest Geordie Soul Fan
Got my DVD through and enjoyed it as much as when I saw it in the pictures back in October. No film will ever please everyone, and this film relates specifically to a subject so many people feel very strongly about. It's far too easy to watch any film and say 'that's not what happened' - its a film not a documentary. Leeds fans might do the same watching the Damned United or your local mafia henchman might scoff at the 'glaring errors' in the Godfather. Personally I loved it and Im glad other people did too. I reckon lots of people on here who went to see it went expecting not to like it which begs the question why go? Link to comment Social source share
Guest soulmaguk
I've seen it, and when asked just say I enjoyed it just to keep the Oldies fanatics off my back. I liked the bits after the film where some of the older ones were interviewed, lady dressed up to her nines in Northern clobber telling us her grand daughter was into it, made me chuckle to see the young lasses reaction, she really did not want to be any part of that old scene really, and more into the acting. The whole film and music was not as enjoyable as Quadrophenia, only just ok. Most annoying part is used to have a Harvey Scales - Trackdown, sold it for £150, bugger. 5 out of 10 Jock. I DID read the script in 2002 and it had NOTHING to do with Northern Soul. Fact! You have told us what you think time and time again (even before you saw it) what you think about the film, do you really need to keep telling us, it's getting boring. I don't think anyone cares anymore that you've read the script in 2002, don't think anyone did in the first place. So what if it came out on DVD with in months, most blockbusters are on DVD within 6 months. Who cares if it cost £3.99, great if you ask me. I bought the Temptations movie for 97 pence, does that devalue it just because it was cheap. I don't think anyone expected a masterpiece, far from it and I don't think anyone expected it to be 100% factually correct. It's a film, plain and simple and most films I've seen use artistic license and stray from the truth. It isn't a documentary about Northern Soul and it doesn't claim to be either. Judging by the reviews and marks out of ten most found it an ok way to spend an hour and twenty minutes. I know Kerry and myself did. Anyone would think it is the end of Northern Soul as we know it. The scene has been exploited far worse than this in the past and no doubt it will happen again in the future, who cares. As Dave Moore said it won't change a thing for most of us on the scene and how we spend our time on the scene. It might just though bring a few new young faces on to the scene, people it badly needs. 1 Link to comment Social source share

Agentsmith
bought the dvd and i have to say that the dialogue above everything else, was lightweight, to say the least. the genuine footage, interspersed, helped to pad out the obviously innocent plot. i also felt that the subplot of the older dancer cornering the market with both dance space and the girlie element was almost pointing the finger at a certain dancer by the nick-name of "booper" although ive no knowledge of him being a dark character, i believe frank thought he was something special at wigan....til the lads from the catacombs turned up to show him how it was really done!...i think that narked him a bit...tell me if im wrong, its just that his name and image spring to mind in that sequence. i also dont think the concept of gangster-style bullying was relevant to the casino but i didnt frequent it a great deal so again, put me right. on the whole its a conveluted portrayal of the seventies, but we came from all walks of life before we united under a common banner and this film points in that direction with complet obviousness...not garbage but not champion...i score a 5....a fair reflection? It was rather hard to understand all the line, 'cause of british accents =), though we liked it. I'm from Russia, Saint-Petersburg, so I'd like to make a translation of the film in Russian, but I need some help. I need the whole line in English written as subtitles. Guest Hunnymon
Last Monday whilst in HMV I noticed "Soulboy" on display right at the front of the shop alongside Pirahna 3D. I didn't buy it then though because I knew my daughter had ordered it as a late Christmas present for me (surely the marketing department had slipped up in releasing it after Christmas). Anyway yesterday the DVD arrived and last night me and the Mrs watched it together. Not really a feature film though, it wast more like a TV drama that used to be shown on TV back in the day before soaps and reality TV took over . However, we thought that it did capture a certain 70s feel and the writer also cleverly slowly introduced a little twist to the plot so that things didn't quite turn out the way I originally expected them too. The film did need a climax for it to work and has Northern Soul is a dance orientated scene I guess the "dance off" scene was a logical step, also noting that dancing competitions are very popular in the media right now and this could also help give the film a wider appeal. Definately the film had warmth and a feel good factor to it. I've gone for eight out of ten mainly because Northern Soul now has it's own film.and with the passage of time you never know we all may look upon it more favourbly than we do at this current moment in time. One more thing that I feel I should mention is the very high audio quality of the soundtrack (which sounded fantastic). I'm thinking that if the tracks on the CD are of the same high audio quality then it must also be worth a purchase.. I thought the music sounded really compressed and flat. In fact I decided to see if my ears were deceiving me and as my TV goes into the hi-fi amp (for recording audio) I did a little test. We listened to Detroit Soul - All Of My Life on the DVD and then compared it to a vinyl copy, MP3 and then played it off Youtube. All with the same settings and through the same equipment. DVD sounded worst of the lot. Lord knows what they did to the soundtrack Link to comment Social source share

I suggested him to Shimmy Marcus the Director at a location meeting 6 years ago. Curiously, Lonnie's look is similar to Frank in Shameless. A persona that obviously influenced the Director. Guest Geordie Soul Fan
I agree it needed a climax but at least use a couple of decent dancers, the actors inept moves won't be attracting many youngsters IMO. As said previously I enjoyed it and gave it a 7 Winnie :-) This might be where the difference of opinion comes in Winnie, I am new to the scene and I thought the dancing was fantastic, even more impressive that the actors did it themselves. Not having seen anything live I wouldn't know the real thing from owt else but it made me more interested and led me to this site and several hours browsing You Tube for footage from the Casino, there are some canny clips from events held around the country as well. I suppose it's my lack of real experience of seeing it live that let me be really blown away by the film as a whole. Link to comment Social source share
Paul-s
This is a topic for people to give their opinion of the film when they have seen it. Thanks for your much valued opinion Chalky. I was responding to a post by the writer who was making closeted remarks about me (post 453). So maybe check back a bit before condescending to answer something out of context. As we know, no one really gives a f--k about anyones opinion on here. For example, i dont give a f--k about yours and will continue to exercise my right to reply. Im glad you enjoyed it, i fully expected you to. Anyway, as i said its great to see it on DVD so quickly. I did, by the way, go and see it and, as i have said before, it was absolutely sh--te! bad script, bad acting and even poorer dancing. Was it Wigan Casino as you remember it Chalky? best paul Edited January 12, 2011 by paul-s Link to comment Social source share
Chalky
You made a remark about cut price dvd in fobbs and posted a reply to someone else's comments, why not answer the writer directly? Like I said this topic is about peoples reviews of the movie. Link to comment Social source share
Spacehopper
already put my opinion on the film up many pages back (thought it was alrite)but would like to add....we have many youngsters (20s+)who are curious about northern at go go children and they ARE impressed with the dancers and thats just the basic footwork ! even if we could do the tricks there wouldnt be room anyway...they come up and ask about tracks are buying cds (and maybe one day original vinyl) and im sure this film will help rather than hinder...i mean less face it some of you (when you were young and less critical) were turned on to northern by wigans ovation on totps !!..even if you dont admit i never expected it to be exactly like the casino...i was too young to go so i dont know from personsal experience...but still wasnt surprised at casino goers replies...but at least the film didnt include some of the pop shite that got played there at times !...and danced to aswell!!...better run for cover now... dean ps please note i said 'at times.'..i know there was some great music discovered and played there and i would have loved it... Daved
I've finally seen it and thought it was much better than I expected it to be. Some great tunes, story was quite good, dance off was crap obviously but overall I enjoyed it. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Guest in town Mikey
I crossed over to the light side and watched it last night. Curtains closed, sound down etc. I found myself quite enjoying it. There were some good comedy moment and some sound lines. The acting was of a good standard, and thankfully the music was great. I had major reservations, but the film did tell a story, and didnt really miss the point of Northern Soul. I thought the lead male character was pretty cool, and not a circus clown (which was a major fear). I lovd the contrast between the staid local life compared to the exciting underground after dark shenanigans. I can remember as a teenager a school friend telling me to get a life because I wasnt down the local disco with them at weekends. I saw some of that in the movie. The dance off was toe curlingly aweful, but thats really the only negative. A couple of bits I did like, (DONT READ IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE FILM AND ARE PLANNING TO. SPOILER) In the record bar, when he cooly asks the record dealer Whats new? And the guy replies "none of it, thats the point". Not 100% true, but pretty funny, and I can imagine a few likely guys who might fit that dealers profile. And the cheesy bit at the end with the dying fly fella, who says "this isnt you any more, go where you belong". Cheesy as hell line, but one that I think also rings true. All in all a far better film than expected. Mikey, heading back into the shadows. Edited January 13, 2011 by in town Mikey Link to comment Social source share
