Just returned from the beaches of Dunkirk.......

Amazed to see this "poll" has attracted 100 responses......and SOULBOY- THE MOVIE has not yet been released!

Presumably no one including me has seen it then. I must therefore assume that marking is to be based on ones imaginations, just as it seems SOULBOY- THE MOVIE is based on the imaginations of the non-Wigan attending filmakers, although, in fairness they have taken direction from Russ "Mr Wigan Himself" Winstanley, so at least we can be assured that true soulboy credentials are properly in place.

The marking----well I dont know. I'm inclined towards conservatism so I think I may go for a middle of the road "5". Or, taking a leaf out of Cathy McGowan's book "Oil give it foif" (5). ( Perhaps with a few more exciting reviews I might tip it to a "6").

I must protest at this sloppy posting. It was Janice Nicholls of "Thank your lucky stars" fame who gave it "foive"

This is in no way a vendetta against Souljer6, whom I sat next to in class for two years and who throughout that time copied my History and English Literature homework. I have no idea why as he was doing Economics and Maths.

THAT'S A LIE!

Well, ok, I'll concede the Janice Nicholls point but if I had copied your "work" I would have ended up with a wad of empty pages. You were never there; always wagging it looking for records.........to the extent that the School had the signature of the guy behind the counter of Ralphs Records in Stockport as your mother's on your sick/ excuse notes.

What does that tell you readers of our Rodders?

Well that's rich coming from the person who blamed me for getting a months worth of detentions. When you asked me for advice on an excuse to cover your missing school and I said put down a funeral, I never dreamt you'd choose your own.

anyone tell me what tunes are used in this movie ?

The ones I remember offhand are:

Al Wilson - The Snake

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

The Tams - Be Young, Be Fooish, Be Happy

Yvonne Baker - You Didn't Say A Word

World Column - So Is The Sun

Porgy & The Monarchs - If It's For Real

Gabrielle Climi - On A Magic Carpet Ride (over the closing credits)

I saw it a few weeks ago and can't remember now. Possibly Eddie Foster - I Never Knew (but I might be imagining that).

Nothing horrendous like Footsie!

Couple more from the soundtrack:

Jackie Wilson - Soul Galore

Danny White - Cracked Up Over You

I think it also had

Percy Millem - Call On Me

Detroit Soul - All Of My Life (featured twice)

Checkerboard Squares - Double Cooking

World Column - So Is The Sun

Yvonne Baker - You Didn't Say A Word

I have a full list for the film content and for the UMG soundtrack album (which differs slightly) but I'm pretty sure there have been a few changes.

I'm fairly indifferent about this, only seen the trailer, in which it states a date of 1974.

Yet the discography includes "So is the Sun", which I thought was released in 1976.

I'm probably wrong.

" SITS " was released on Tower in 1969 .: I think you may be referring to the UK release on Capitol .

I am sure it had surfaced on the NS scene by 1974 , so its' inclusion into the soundtrack is vindicated .

If the compilers of / for the soundtrack had failed in securing the rights to " SITS ", they could have used this fine example of plagiarism .........

Hmm, one thing I love and hate about the internet forums in almost equal measure is that people form opinions, allegiances, and more importantly dislike of people who speak their mind, particularly when they see it is a critique of them or their world, often this colours their posts and their responses and they actually respond with that in mind often oblivious to the actual point being made and completely forgetting what was actually said, I have done it myself.

This appears to be a very good example of this, not least with some of Rods sycophantic and/or psychotic fan club openly praising Rodney's obvious bootleg of my idea because it gave me and Paul a deserved doing for daring to express an opinion and have some original thought about quality, or lack of, but ignoring the original actual topics! Anyway I digress and am in danger of going of on that very type of path, so back on topic.....

I generally don't engage in trading insults unless I actually know who I am talking to, so Souljer666 would be nice for you to introduce yourself as we may well know each other and be long lost soul brothers, while waiting I will answer your current points,

. I didnt fight at Agincourt but if I was a filmaker it wouldnt stop me making a film about it.....and who could say I was wrong if I decided to put the French army into 2CVs?

You could but its unlikely you would get anyone to even read past page 1 of your script, unless finding a script reader in need of some anti-depressant cure, and you would be thought within the industry as a bit of a twat that either had too much money or was shagging Sofia Coppola, or just a bit of a twat. We can pontificate and postulate all we like in our post modern relatively un-informed states about the finer points of the film world, but whether we like it or not there are rules to all such things if you want to be taken seriously, and one of the major rules for a historical genre is to do your research and get it right, I didn't invent the rules, they are just there as Marty Scorsese writes and talks about endlessly, Some do break the rules, visualising in the style of Monty Python or Andre Bretton , and if you are in that space then your idea may work, however generally the rule breakers are geniuses leading the way and I suspect your idea doesn't quite fit that bill just yet.

I'm really surprised by a fairminded guy like you exhalting this kind of behaviour. This MSS guy is surely mocking these poor lads. It's not their fault they dont know what they're talking about and good on them that they talk about it with such authority

Hmm amount of knowledge is always relative to the debate, and therefore more difficult to challenge, if you mean to do with Northern and are comparing me with Rodney or people like his ex-side kick, Del Boy Withers, then I know nothing and would not claim to be in their realm of making a difference "on the scene", hopefully one day people like them will get their credit and it is something I take a great interest in doing. However, if you mean generally, well I have a reasonable general knowledge, nothing major, around Northern scene 1979-1995, not much after as it became too much like a home for the dementially challenged and I just became an occasional visitor. It would be good to actually have some debate around then as strangely its always a bit of a struggle as most people seem to only specialise in 1947-77 and then post 1996, and seem much more interested in the width of my trousers and breadth of my clap rather than the depth of my soul interest, hmm strange really isn't it.

Alternatively if you mean in films then I am definitely no expert but again can hold a conversation from watching a couple of films a week, no real specialism but since the director of the film club I attend is German he always sneaks some home content and this year its been a season of Weimar republic films, the ones without subtitles were a bit of a struggle, so happy to have a debate around our view on German cinema, I am not very good at necessarily showing off with all the symbolism etc etc but I will be pretty 100% clear and concise at giving you my opinion on why it was shit, or good, although again this is all relative to the individual as I would say Mr Rimmers' comparison example was of a shit film so wouldn't really hold water for me, I like my films, like my music, like my books, to be the best there is, no matter what the subject. Not much to ask in my eyes

Which brings us back nicely on topic, I said this film would be shit if it didn't get it right and since then there's been a whole slew of slavering cyber stalkers, telling me it doesn't need to have all the detail right, handclaps to Jades, right cars, right haircuts, right way of boy kissing girl, right way of shi**ing in outside bog, etc etc etc when if any of you had taken your blinkers off you would have seen I wrote was

"I still can't help feeling they only added Northern into the film as they knew they had a captive audience rather than any concern for the subject matter, just a pity they didn't actually take any time to understand their audience which has always been my concern about this, the lack of respect and understanding they have and the fact its a crowd ploy rather than subject matter they love along with their behavior has me thinking this just wont work, and I say it again, its about getting the right emotions attached to the film which Paul Sadot did so successfully with his play, its not an easy thing, I think the scene and people on it deserve the respect of setting context and concept correctly, then the storyline is an independent beast and can take care of itself and that is the least we deserve"

Never once have I said all the details of every last thing had to be 100% right, I realised this had limited scope for that, its main purpose was to remind me of my youth, making me smell feel and taste my early all nighter days by getting "it" right, plain and simple, which none of you have actually f*****g debated, you have all, as usual, read your own words and in your desperation to be heard debated something that has never actually been said, which brings me back nicely to my opening paragraph,

Penultimate point in all this, its fair to say that in all great comic genius writing, there are always some serious points made, and both Rodders and I both made some serious points, (mines were right obviously while his were at least misguided) amongst the humour, however I suspect everyone has just gone for the money shot, as usual ignoring the actual context, Rupert Murdoch your job is done!

Anyway ultimate major relevant point everyone seems to be ignoring is that I still haven't said anything about the actual film despite what my flurry of fans seem to emphatically try and allude to, and I suspect I am one of the few that has actually seen the thing, if I didn't have to waste all this time defending what I haven't said or done, maybe I could do a proper review, although based on my evidence above, you would just see what you want to read in it, so no real need, just make up my review in your heads, debate it solidly and then tell me my opinion, job done.

Okay of to watch Caddyshack, not seen it for over a month.......

Well I blagged a couple of tickets from the film-makers for a small cinema preview last week and actually went along in a positive mind as Val Palmer had seen it and reckoned it was good.

I have to say I was badly disappointed. The actors were pretty poor dancers and as the climax was a dance off it made the whole thing a bit second rate. The dance scenes from Stoke were obviously unusable as they used all the This England film, coloured it n a bit and interspersed it with the recent Stoke filming. The story was horribly obvious and dragged in places, the love scenes were so cringing I actually had to put my hand over my eyes at times.

The music was OK, a couple of tracks seemed to be re-recordings, i particularly enjoyed On A Magic Carpet Ride at the end and had a flush of pride as it was one of my discoveries that usually gets dissed. There were several mistakes in the detail, but it would be petty to point those out, it's fun looking for them, it was the film as a film that disappointed me.

Good points were the baddy was good and believable, though a trifle old. Liam made a few good appearances, the crush at the doors was very authentic and the female heroine was fit, but better looking than the original girlfriend that was meant to be the bees knees that I got confused.

Having said that, my partner Donna really enjoyed it and gave it an eight, while a work colleague enjoyed it and thought it would reflect well on the scene, I'm not sure about that but i hope so even though it wasn't my cup of tea at all.

I deliberately included Try My Love - Tony & The showmen on the cd Chalky not in the play! I did it cos i was sick of the boring, repetitive, same, old same old attitude on the scene and said it would have been played at Wigan, if they had found it. I ALSO< put that in the sleeve notes, so i did it with knowledge and deliberation, not out of ignorance. It was a statement that things should move on...Glad to clear that up for you. best P

I wasn't knocking you or your motives for inclusion (I thought it was Carla Thomas, didn't remember the Tony & Showmen), I was merely highlighting the fact that songs out of period had been used previousluy, yours was the only northern one that came to mind.

Didnt think you were mate. With Carla that was the first production and i used to show a film of young dancers on the screen dancing to it as the audience went out...with a scrolling text sayinf 'Still Keeping The Faith'. Again, i used it to show that the scene was still moving on and growing. BUT, for the narrative of the play itself, all the songs were in historical context....best Paul

A good honest review ady.

And one to which on the whole I'd agree with, although I only saw a test screening last year so it couldve totally changed.

Interesting you mentioned about the Stoke dancing. The film crew had the opportunity to get a lot more 'filler footage' with some of the better dancers but declined regularly, mainly due to time constraints apparently. I thought it looked odd flicking between the this England and Stoke footage, didn't work for me. One or t'other wouldve been better

Filming dance and getting a real continuity and authenticity, amongst the young dancers is a long complicated job and these IPSO guys, im afraid, didn't put the preperation in and lacked the knowledge and skills to achieve it. Hence the same old 'This is England' footage!:hatsoff2:

Saw the play at Coventry , seem to remember it ended with 'It Will Never Be Over For Me ' .Sure that was post Wigan (?) , but apt none the less ..............Enjoyed the play greatly myself but my wife & daughter just didn't get it as they had no prior knowledge of the scene . Strongly suspect it will be the reverse if we go to watch Soulboy as a familly .

Richard, you really must not post any thing remotely amusing on this site just in case someone who does not know you thinks you are not qualified to comment about anything at all, because after all you are a Johnny come lately and have only been around for five minutes unlike somone who was around from 1979coz thats a long time ago................................................

Over the years, this 'underground scene' has withstood all that's tried to dilute it. TV pundits, Egocentric Media thirsty DJs, Divvies who dance in clothing 40 years old, youngsters who think dancin' on Duffy videos is gaining them 'street cred', Cassette tapes, CDs, MP3s, Ipods, returnees who instantly become promoters, people who reinvent their personal history, bootleg DJs, the soul police, the vinyl police, the fashion police, the DS, the influx of barbs, the Mod revival, Coronation Street, naff advert and after naff advert on TV, a million new 'record dealers', price guides, carvers, theatrical plays, film extras, yuppie type record collectors, etc etc and none of it has affected me. I still do what I've done for 35 years. I buy records and dance to 'em. Can't see this film making any impression whatsoever on my lifestyle or enjoyment of what I do. It's a peripheral, a distraction for some but irrelevant to me. I'll probably get the DVD off Pete Smith in a year for a fiver and watch it when I've a spare 90 mins but that'll be it. It won't change my life, it won't stir up feelings of protectionism that it does in some. It's a film....like "Finding Nemo" was. That's it.

Regards,

Dave

I agree.

The best post i have ever seen on soul sauce.

As for the film. I watched it last night at Stoke.

I enjoyed the film, but as just that.

A film about the 70s with a northern soul theme.

I did not judge it as this was wrong and did not happen or that was right.

I judged it on 90 minutes of entertainment end of.

As for giving anything marks out of ten,i always find that idea pretty pointless about anything.

After all we all see, hear or judge things differently through our own life experiences and influences.

so there is no right or wrong, good or bad just a personal opinion that's all.

I've given it 8 out of 10 as I believe it has ended up pretty much what it set out to be.

That is - a coming of age/right of passage/teenage angst film with a strong Wigan/Northern Soul theme running through it.

It has a low-budget feel but don't think that's a bad thing as it suits the era.

If there is nothing in here you can relate to - then you weren't inhabiting the same planet as me in the early 1970's.

See it.

i thought they did a pretty good job with the film and could relate to many things in the film! we would go down the footy match for a scrap then off to a nighter spend ur money on records, fashion and traveling to nighters! would go round me mates houses and constantly practice moves! oh i must confess i did the amphet thing and aint ashamed either as 90% of us did back then !!! ktf .

I have to say I would rather have a youngster inspired by this film with a genuine interest in the music, the dancing and the collecting side of it dressed in 70's clobber than some people who just stop by and take the piss, ausdruckstänzer or some moaning, opinionated knowitall coming into a venue !!
