Funky Si Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 Taking the wife out for the day on Monday - might need some therapy at some stage so .......are there any record shops in the middle of York that I can accidentally come across ? Hi GrayM There are 3 worth looking at (apart from the many charity shops - including the specialist Oxfam books & music shop at the top of Micklegate). 2 are on Gillygate, which also has loads of nice arts, crafts & clothes shops ideal for the fairer sex. If you are standing at the north end of the Minster - at the end of High Petergate - you walk past the York Arms pub, down through Bootham Bar, and then right at the crossroads ahead of you, there is a record shop on the opposite side of the road called Relics, which sells mostly vinyl with a good soul and jazz selection. The other one is on the Bar Walls side of the road about two thirds of the way down - it has a whole room of vinyl at the back. The third shop is a little second hand store called Attic Records on a side street called Patrick Pool which is next to The Shambles. Its in the Attic of a hairdressers shop and is run by an enthusiastic young scooter boy called Alex Fox. Have a lovely day in England's finest city! Funky Si

Funky Si Thanks Si This got me wondering about the feasibility of some sort of directory of shops up and down the country or even a comprehensive list of record 'dealers' (large & small) Has anyone ever tried to compile one ? Obviously this would be dependant on a number of issues including maintaining such a list and more importantly whether folks would want to disclose the numerous sources where they've managed to pick up high ticket items for pennies !! Graham There used to be cracking record shop in York in the eighties with loads of UK rarities plastered all over the walls sure it was in a tiny shopping arcade.........can't for the life of me remember what it was called.Probably long gone now.

Recordmania in the Davygate Centre They also did in good line in compilation tapes that were actually blank when you go them home, but I think that was down to disorganisation rather than malicious intent.

Correct - actually, my tapes weren't blank, just slightly fast and very lo-fi Think I've still got one Charlie, who used to work there, comes to York Soul Club fairly regularly, and was spinning some Modern at the York Easter All-Dayer. The excellent Track Records shut in York a couple of years ago , not much soul vinyl but a superb Soul CD section.....
