Mach Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 might sound a bit quirky this, but does anybody think that a song sang with a " lisp" detracts from the final product, there are quite a few around and the one that springs to mind immediatley is joanne touchstone,s, "walk softly" ...
Wiggyflat Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Billy Stewart built his career on it...........bbbbrrrrrrr summertime.........bbrrrrrr once i had a secret Lover. Not sure it was a lisp or rolling of the tongue.Never stopped Toyah Wilcox either.
Guest Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Fred & The Turbins is a prime example! I laugh everytime I hear it...
s7oul Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 O V Wright Had a unique lisp sound to his supremely soulful voice, this was apparently due to his false teeth not fitting properly.

Tricky Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Marion Javious - waiting in the wingsElla Washington - If time stands still are two good lispers.

Always struggled a bit with Garland Green's diction, enunciation or pronunciation - call it what you will - but it does detract from what are otherwise wonderful records/songs, sorry. Always loved the between song chatter on the SAR boxset with Sam Cooke admonishing the Womack Brothers - 'Since you are singing words lets sings them as precisely as possible' and of course he was the master.

Jordirip Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Ha!! my son asked me in the car the other day, "dad, why are all your records sung by people with a lisp?". I'd just played Marion Javius - "Waiting in the wings", followed by the Headliners - "Little Sister". I told him to shove a thock in it. Jordi
Guest Adam G Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Otis Smith by a country mile I cant listen to the Albert LP track one life as his lisping totally ruins it for me.

Pomonkey Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Most glaring one I know is Alphonso Hamilton on Gateway "I'll let you go fwee" (killer track though, has the immortal line "Just put an egg in your shoe and beat it")

Gene-r Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 (edited) Brilliant Double Thider Tony Actually, an old record dealer friend of mine had some records for me a few years ago when I went to see him. He threw me a copy of a Freddie Davies single on UK Major Minor called "I Want Me Seed". He was disappointed, as he bought it thinking (by the title) that it was a reggae single! Gilly Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Not so much a lisp ive always thought likely a gap between his front teeth,BEWARE BEWARE on MIDAS when the break comes in the middle listen good you may just here it(might try slowing the record down to make it more easy to pick out)
Guest Paul Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 Z.Z. Hill had a lisp which could be detected both when he sang and when he spoke. I thought it had a nice sound. I see these things as interesting characteristics, not afflications.
Sunnysoul Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Would have thought Little Anthony would have been the first name mentioned in this topic.
Steve G Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Roscoe Robinson had quite a lisp, either that or bad fitting false teeth
