Goldsoul Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) Is'nt it just a case of one is run solely for profit and the other is'nt Both are run for profit and enjoyment. Whitby is £30 by the way. Edited June 16, 2010 by The Golden 101
TOAD Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 ok then let me explain as your newish on here...theres a lot of wind up posts...and im not the only one who thinks this may have been one intended to stir things up. youd not belive the lengths promoters go too to sabatage other events ! just out of interest has the first poster been reading this...i think not
Guest Northern PhanTom Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Back to the Topic please. Have been to every Whitby since it started and went to Bridlington last year back to back find both good value for money can't say why one costs more than the other and to be honest don't give a monkeys as long as when I get there, I get what it says on the tin. Tom
Chalky Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 No mate was not named at you specifically; my point is moderators should let Topics run their course unless they get really out of hand. If peeps reading the thread don't like the way its heading let the ones who do, get on with it. We live in a nanny state, now we are being censored on forums to easy! Tom what I said was my own personal view (I am allowed one) and nothing to do with moderation. The mods haven't got involved I did on a personal level. The so called tongue in cheek comments weren't needed, no one knows the overheads, how many needed through the door to cover their costs etc and why there is a tenner price difference and in the scheme of things does it matter, £30 is cheap for three days entertainment. The tongue in cheek comments from more than one, had one meaning, anyone could see that and anyone with any knowledge of this forum knew exactly where the topic was heading. There was no need to say one does it solely for the money and the other to cover their costs, load of crap IMHO, both do it for the same reason. off to work!!
Guest Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 What a disingenuous question! I suspect you type with one hand because the other is holding a very large wooden spoon. People promoting weekenders are entitled to charge whatever they like, if you think the ticket price is too much to pay: don't go. Simple as that. Hi Paul, From now on I will just read other peoples posts, Ive been accused a couple of times as trying to cause trouble which I am not, I thought this was a fair question, I am not a promoter never have been never will be. Dont have a problem with either £20 or if it was £100 never said I did just asked what the differences are because not been to either. Best r Bob
Wiganer1 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 whichever weekender you go to - youre helping to kill off the traditional weekly saturday allniter!!! theres simply too many weekenders on for my liking,,not just once a year but twice, three times! OMG!! i hope it never happens but it looks that way to me!! needless to say i wont be going either! but sure they'll be both brilliant events...
Rbman Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Both seem to be very good value for money at these prices. As far as I know this isnt www.gocomparesoulweekenderscomparethemeerkats.com Steve, I can't get that link to work.....
viphitman Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 It s bloody cheap IMHO. The soul scene have been a bunch of tight gits for years Tenner for an allnighter and still some moan. You wouldn't get a night out in a club for ten hours for a pound an hour. Bet it would cost double that in a top dance club? The cost to the average punter has hardly gone up for years, especially soul nights, we seem to want everything on the cheap. Just had a google, Ministry Of Sound, £13 10.30 till 6.30 the cheapest, many other nights at £15 and £20. Would a soulie pay £20 for an allnighter?

Ian Parker Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 (edited) £20 and £35 is not a lot of money for a full weekend of soul, who ever the promoter is. I agree Joan! I have paid £20 for a one evening event at 40s & 50s night ...............so both are very good value I tend to go to the Bridlington weekender & not to the Whitby one, but only because i have not fancied a second weekender straight after Debbie x Edited June 17, 2010 by parkash
Tabs Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 It's the kilt that drives them wild. A lot of promoters have tried to touch me up.
Guest Phoenix8049 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Excuse me while i put in my 10Ps worth. I think the guy asked a simple question in all innocence. Why does everybody always assume on here that if you mention comparing venues or music policies or fashion or oldies or underplayed oldies, you get a barrage of insults and people think you are just trying to wind everybody up. Boy there is some PARANOID people on this forum. Rant Over. Stu.
Guest Northern PhanTom Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Have been to several do's run by both promoter's over the years and can honestly say no one forced me there with a gun against my head, never thought I was being ripped off by either in fact if it wasn't for promoters of these 2 venues, whether they are in it for fame, gain or the love of the scene fact is there would not be venue's to attend. Think the prices charged at each event are still good value for money if however one was charging £20 and the other £100 then I'm sure peeps would vote with their feet/pockets. Tom

Cant believe the way it's got people's backs up....looking at Bob's profile i'd say, he does'nt come across as someone who deliberatly posed the question to cause trouble or bring these two events to our attention by way of plugging either of em...which is often the case for these kind of posts. Hopefully Bob got the answers he was looking for ,but more so ,he got a baptism of how sensitive some people are on here p.s answer to Kev's last post ......people putting events on a week before isnt half as bad as people putting it on the same night in a 5 mile radius, and that goes on very often
Cunnie Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Debbie- Couldn't agree more. Any chance you could tell the Brid promoters who deliberately put a weekender on a few miles away from Whitby(since 2002!) to undermine our promotion? Would it not be easier to tell the Bridlington promoter who lives just around the corner face to face Kev rather than throw false accusations like the one above around on an open forum? Reason Bridlington is on the dates it is is that they were the available dates for the next 10 years, Fact. Think you'll find that a lot of folks actually go to stop on the East coast for the week & do both weekenders so it could be said that you & the Brid promoters are actually unwittingly helping each other. Would have done the above myself but for the fact that Whitby clashes with the EMS charity weekender.

Cunnie Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 You mean EMS clashes with us. We have been there since 02! Convenient for Brid though. EMS is a charity event Kev & the last one raised over £4000 for the Macmillan cancer trust & to be honest I don't think it will affect you very much so no need for the nit picking really is there?. My point was not about being convienient for Brid. More about being convienient for the punters that are doing both events.

In both my earlier replies i have refuted these claims although you do not seem to have taken this on board! If you want to persist with this view, fair enough. My consience is clear. Enough said!!!!!! regards ROY
scunnyjack Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Would be happy just to get to one of them and they all represent good value for money. Cleggy and Brid always fall on family birthday weekends, Whitby on a junior football tournament where I am involved, and for the last three years ,Blackpool the same weekend I am involved with a football charity function. I do support a number of local nights which is equally as important though. Steve
Rednose Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 This has probably been asked many times but I'm quite new back on the scene after a rest. Why is Bridlington Weekender £20 and Whitby Weekender £35 Best r Bob extra policing costs ?

Best r Bob Hi Bob, Do what you like regarding the forum, it is a place for discussion. You didn't ask what the differences were, you asked "Why is Bridlington Weekender £20 and Whitby Weekender £35" - to be honest, a topic that starts like that is only going to invite people's opinions good or bad rather than a discussion on the merits of the two weekenders. As for whether you are a promoter - I have no idea why you would mention that - is it relevant? Cheers Paul
Guest Drewes Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Don't know the answer to the question as I've been to neither venue. But going to Bridlington for the first time, and profit or break even....................don't give a monkeys,We're going to have a Blast Steve Am sure you will steve... my favourite. The Spa is an amazing venue, its massive with a great dance floor.... and make sure you cast your eye up to that dome in the early hours when the suns starting to rise .... and the promoters go well out of their way to ensure its success... IMVHO, the fact that theyre sold out is testament to the popularity of the event. Not been to whitby..... yet x

Cheers Paul Paul, I mentioned I was not a promoter as a way of explaining my naivety of knowing what is involved in putting on a weekender hence the initial question. I remember the scene as very friendly where people from all walks and parts of Britain and beyond attending a mutitude of Soul events in great spirits and togetherness. replies to what I thought was a simple question prove otherwise which is very sad. When fairly recently started getting back on the scene when asking how i find out what events were on I was told go to Soul Souce, I did and this is the place to go to find soul nights all - nighters weekenders etc, I was also excited at the prospect of asking a handful of what I misstakenly thought were harmless questions:- Each and every one of these have had a barrage of negative and aggressive responses admitedly not really aimed at me but i feel not warranted Best r Bob

The majority of people on here are good people. And still are many good people at all the venues. I have not been on here that long myself and have negative comments which were not called for when i have posted. It just a very small minority on here that think they know it all. And judging by some of the posts i have read, my cat knows more about Northern Soul than they do. Good Luck mate. Stu.

soulatsouthlodge Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 Quite agree, none of us know the true costs. The Whitby venue is certainly more upmarket. Personally I love it and have done since 2005. If someone doesn't think it is good value then there is only one answer, there are obviously plenty of us that do. Keep up the good work Kev!
Godzilla Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 East Riding Council have been have been aggressively marketing their venues, particularly the Spa, in direct competition with Scarborough Borough Council who operate the Whitby one. I think it's likely that the Brid venue will therefore be quite a bit cheaper to hire. That was one (but far the only) reason why the Musicport World Music festival relocated from Whitby to Bridlington in 2008. No axe to grind here by the way - just a bit of local perspective. I actually love both venues and can't wait to see the result of the developments currently underway at the Spa in Scarborough too. Godz
Guest soulmaguk Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 I have been to nearly all the Whitby and the Brid ones, they are two different events all together, the very first Whitby, and Whitby was the first, to the very first Brid one. The thing about Whitby is it never ceases to delight me, seeing Alexander Patton in the flesh at Whitby, wow! i didn't know he was going to be on, what a bonus, and we will probably never see him again. Whitby delivers, with patches, soul bags, beer-towels and braces with keeping the corner stone of British 'Northern Soul' flair in their sights. £30 no probs. Brid was ballsey in the early days, a true Yorkshire affair, Brid takes on the massive job of now recruiting new soul fans these days, making and taking different rooms for playing to new tastes and thirsts for the various genres that have emerged within the scene. Rare Room Recomended. A good hearty £20 I say. Personally, I'm not fussed, because I'm off to Kos on holiday tommorrow. George Anderson (Scarborough)
Dave West Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 (edited) Back to the original topic, there's no answer really, we don't know what overheads are etc. When booking weekender events l imagine you have to book for a few years as it wouldn't be an annual event if the following year someone else had booked it, therefore they may see the opertunity to overcharge the promoter. Would have thought. Dj fees would be high too as most dj would need accomodation etc. £15 difference eh... What's that ? Two double vodka red bulls hic. Burp... Edited June 19, 2010 by Daveboogaloo
Dave West Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 (edited) Actually it's only £10 not £15 difference and only £5 difference to scarborough and skegness weekender but nobodys mentioning those and that's why the Whitby v brid. Debackle keeps rearing it's head. Edited June 19, 2010 by Daveboogaloo

Anais nin Carms Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 I think you are quite cute when you get arsy spot shall I tell you why I like Whitby in particular and this isn't comparison to Brid... I only did Brid once so i can't comment and it was at another venue I think ? I like the quaintness of Whitby , I love it's little shops and I adore GREENS the restaurant and the fish and chips at the Kazbar aswell.... lets not get into the scampi eh then there is that lovely street with the most amazing under wear gifts for your loved ones and little antique shops and tea shops , all very tasteful. The venue... see its not just about soul for me ? An amazing venue that makes you feel like you are on a giagantic ship as you float along its dancefloor looking out of a giant port hole to sea ( I do hope the covers are off this year ) lets see the white of your eyes ! I do find the nights a bit crowded for my taste too much of a buzz of excited people for me , it's the afternoon sessions I love at Whitby What I hate ... the hill ! I darn't try the 159 steps

I don't agree that the Whitby venue is more upmarket by any means, but the place itself is lovely. For the number of rooms on offer at Brid, you can't beat it for value for money plus you've got that beautiful sandy beach a stones throw away apparently there's going to be a footi competition on the beach on Saturday for anyone who's feeling energetic. Another thing I like about Brid, is the "genuine, nice people" who run it and who go out of their way to "help" their punters. The atmosphere is soooo much more friendlier than at Whitby Role on Friday

Why is Bridlington Weekender £20 and Whitby Weekender £35 Best r Bob Just a suggestion and i have no axe to grind with either party because both are friends of me and joy but why dont both sets of promoters invite bob and thier lass or partner to come and have a look at both events as guests and then ask bob to come back on after and tell us his thoughts on both weekenders(be nice to see what someone who has just come back on the scene thinks to our fantastic music in 2010)only an idea all the best Yocky. ps Bob why not try the Skeggy weekender as well brilliant weekender imho cheers.
