Anoraks Corner Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 One that I feel would work is her, 'No matter what you do' on Mercury (7" and LP). I right thumper and a fabulous key change in the instrumental break.

Denbo Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 (edited) One that I feel would work is her, 'No matter what you do' on Mercury (7" and LP). I right thumper and a fabulous key change in the instrumental break. Also came out on UK Mercury and I am after a copy. Can somebody / anybody oblige me with a copy? PM me if you can. Cheers. Dean Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 One that I feel would work is her, 'No matter what you do' on Mercury (7" and LP). I right thumper and a fabulous key change in the instrumental break. Played this out a few times to mixed responses. I do recall it getting a thumbs up from Karl Heard at an Attic night. Both sides are good (can't remeber flip title on uk mercury, not at home at moment) but No Matter What You Do shades it as a potential dance floor tune. I beleive that Her version of I Just Can't Get Enough Of You was a played sound way back in the day. There's a credible version by the Apollas on Loma but Lesley's version has a lot more 60's thump. I'm too young to to rembember this being played but at the age of 15 I picked up an EMI with this on that had seen a lot of wear before I owned it. Owned previously by Eric Hetherington if anyone remebers that esteemed name.
Sunnysoul Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Lesley Gore "Wonder Boy" surely inspired by Martha and the Vandellas "Heatwave"... and a great Scopitone film reel to boot .. check this out:
Sunnysoul Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 " I'll Be Standing By " a great Lesley Gore cross-over tune from her session with Gamble and Huff in Philly in 1968 !"
Garethx Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 (edited) Right at the tail end of her pop career she recorded a couple of singles with Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell. "I'll Be Standing By" was written by G&H with Cindy Scott. The other side, "Look The Other Way" was written by none other than Mikki Farrow! "Standing By" would be a great record with Cindy Scott behind the mike. "Take Good Care" from the same sessions also has a good Philly backing track. Although she was never a soul singer in any sense I feel she's a somewhat under-rated vocalist. The limitation on her career was the massive success of her first single, the pretty naff "It's My Party". Producers tended to multi-track her voice as on the smash hit single whereas by the end of the 60s it was a far stronger instrument. She certainly got to record some great songs: "Maybe I Know" by Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry, and an earlier version of The Inspirations "What Am I Gonna Do With You" written by Gerry Goffin & Russ Titelman. Sunnysoul Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 " Brand New Me " is Lesley's 1968 Northern stomper from legendary New York producer Herb Bernstein who is responsible for a slew of Northern classics like Lynn Randell "Stranger In My Arms" and Lainie Hill "Time Marches On"! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j85wDGhZRDs
Guest Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 She has a couple of dancers, I'm Falling Down is one, My Town My Guy & Me is another i remember this getting very good dancefloor reaction @ the Casino
Dean Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Sam played it at the Whitchurch all-dayer many moons ago ´73/74? Steve Thanks Steve, interesting regarding Just Can't Get Enough of you. Not sure if it wasn't album only? Thought I recalled flip to No Matter What You Do was ok, just checked to see it's I Won't Love You Anymore, which I now notice is the A side of UK Mercury 889.
Guest Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 i remember this getting very good dancefloor reaction @ the Casino
Carol Phyllis Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 I recently played "Maybe I Know" as I was warming up at a local venue & the only person in the place came & thanked me, said he hadn't heard it since his Twisted Wheel days. Not sure I'd play it to a full house though, maybe I'll give it a go & let you know the reaction!
Guest Perception Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 We Know Were In Love / Mercury Records. I Think Was Played Around 1978. I remember that being played in the Casino. Don't think I have heard it since! Time and place!
Guest alanbonthrone Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 I remember that being played in the Casino. Don't think I have heard it since! Time and place! Nita Rossi. You Know Were In Love. Played About The Same Time.
Guest Simon Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 'You didn't look 'round' off the 'My town, my guy & me' could possibly work, it's got a sorta 'Jennifer Wells - Dining in Chinatown' kinda feel to it, also 'Coolin' no foolin' off 'Boys, Boys, Boys' album is interesting & could be a possible spin. Think we've spun pretty much every decent Lesley Gore track at Da Doo Ron Ron over the years, 'Maybe i know', 'Wonder boy', 'Run Bobby Run', 'No matter what you do' are all regular spins, 'California nights', 'I don't care', 'It's my party', 'You don't own me', 'Treat me like a lady', 'Sunshine, lollipops & rainbows' all get spins also & there's plenty of others that escape me. Over the years i've really got into her stuff & she's now knocked Brenda Holloway off top female spot in my personal faves. Simon
