Just had the 12" of Otis Clay - The Only Way Is Up drop through my door yesterday as didn't fancy wasting my money on another Echo 7" copy that was cueburned to hell & vastly overpriced & oh the joy when I played it.

The sound quality was amazing, no hiss in the first few seconds & it played so loud & clear I could hear things that I didn't realise were there. Was like listening to a different record & I had to play it a few times just to check that it wasn't actually rerecorded.

Think it must have been took off the original mastertape as it looks a legit copy as all the licenseing info is on there.

It's on Harmless records & has "Life Styles" & "Coldcut" wrote on the label + 2 other tracks I Want You Back - Bobby Shad & The Long Wait - Morton Stevens.

Thing I was wondering though is was this took from a film soundtrack & if so what film & when?

Taken from the Harmless CD/LP Life:Styles compiled by Coldcut in 2004. I would assume that the track is legally licensed.

For my money the best way to get this track is the Japanese album The Only Way Is Up on JVC/Victor from 1980. Re-issued by Rooster Blues in the US later in the 80s. The sound quality on the Japanese album is absolutely brilliant.

Was chatting with Soul Sam (hark at me namedropping !) last night at Soul Purpose about this & he now plays it off the Japanese album you mentioned above. Reason I was wondering is he asked me if I could get him a copy of the 12" as he knew nothing about it or if I would sell him mine then he remembered selling me a copy of the hissy 7" several years ago. Funny how things come full circle sometimes.

Guess the only way not to own it is the original 7" version.

Wonder how many times that gets said on herelaugh.gif
