i am the producer of the film and the first time i posted on this site was yesterday. i am also a girl rather than a guy.

the writer read russ winstanley's book and then wrote a film where the backdrop was the wigan casino. the film is a drama, the story about a young man finding a scene in which he belongs. it is not a documentary and it doesn't purport to get everything 100% right but we made every effort with limited resources. i only ask that you give the film a go if you like then great and if you dont then i am sorry.

i already gave the reason why we asked russ and i stand by it. whoever we asked would have upset someone.

To much info going out young lady, magic carpet ride :shhh: billy

Your point is schtum unless you've seen it. My point is we're allowed to express views on what we've seen, heard and read so far. So there.

whatever the inaccuracies (and the vast majority of films use artistic licence) from what I've seen it looked ok and I'll reserve judgement until I have seen it. I did cringe when I saw the break dancing but I can see the film for what it is, a drama with northern soul as a backdrop. Its not as though its a history of northern soul is it. Anyway, I'll wait until i've seen the film before passing judgement.

And as for the clapping in the film it can't be any worse than at a venue these days, its terrible.

And as for Magic Carpet Ride, is the unissued Derek Martin the original? It is after all a Teddy Randazzo production?

Northern Soul nights at the Wigan Casino -

 the film was inspired by his book.

when you say Russ's book do you mean Soul Survivors that he wrote with me (david nowell) in 1996?

the one that I did most of the work on?

the one that he insisted his name went on first?

do you mean THAT book?

I look forward to proper credits/vast royalty fees from you!:D

new poster but have been a member for years - just wanted to say that I saw the film yesterday and thought it was brilliant. I never went to Wigan so I cant comment on its accuracy as a historical document but why oh why do people have to coat it off so much? quadrophenia wasnt a historical document either, it's just a film. film is fantasy and entertainment and this film acheives that very well. i know that i would rather see a film that is based around the soul scene (however historically inaccurate) than most of the american shit we get forcefed. I say well done to the director and producer for getting it made - the soundtrack is, as you would expect, second to none and the film is great fun. i had goosebumps several times and it is the first film ive seen since Rocky where everybody clapped at the end!! I hope it's a surprise hit

42384.jpgThe 64th Edinburgh International Film Festival got underway in style on Wednesday night, with a cracking little shindig in honour of opening night film Sylvain Chomet's The Illusionist (see Damon's words on the film), but the party was one of those events where there's so many friends and acquaintances present that you never quite get around to saying hello to everyone you see and recognise, even when you check your watch and it's 2am. Good times, good job it's only the beginning.

Day one proper saw me head first to the Cameo for Outcast, a Scottish/Irish horror co-production set mostly on a run-down, modern day Edinburgh housing estate. Mary (Kate Dickie) and her teenage son Fergal (Niall Bruton) arrive and rent an apartment in the rough block, and it soon becomes evident that Mary is a witch - both she and Fergal are being hunted by Cathal (James Nesbitt) and Liam (Ciaran McMenamin, making a welcome big screen appearance - I still recognise him from TV's The Young Person's Guide To Becoming A Rock Star). To top it all off, their arrival coincides with a beastie roaming the alleyways at night. At first, Outcast really drew me in: the melding of Celtic witchcraft into the modern day context is really engrossing, and the clouded motivations of the each character makes good, curious viewing, and you're never quite sure who the good guys are. The handheld camerawork fits the story, and the performances are solid across the board (keep an eye out for Karen Gillan - Dr. Who's Amy Pond - in a small role), even when Nesbitt, McMenamin and Lothian 'laird' James Cosmo are desperately trying to deliver archaic dialogue with all the po their faces can muster. There is, however, 'playing your cards close to your chest', and then there's 'withholding information', and by the last act, the script has more loose ends than director Colm McCarthy can keep track of, which without wading into spoiler territory, makes for a frustrating finale. That said, it's well worth a watch for those with even a passing interest in the genre.

Next, I headed over to Cineworld, spotting Sir Sean along the way (would it be EIFF without him?), opening a new apartment block which has just gone up on his birthplace. He seemed on very good form with the crowd, but I couldn't stay long, as I needed to see SoulBoy. I'm a big fan of soul music, and have long felt that there's a really good coming of age tale in the Northern Soul scene - working class kids of the depressed British north of the '70s blowing off steam in sweaty dance halls with an aggressive, energetic dance style. Which is essentially where director Shimmy Marcus guides his story: Martin Compston is Joe, a goalless teen living in Stoke, 1974. The moment he spots super-fit hairdresser Jane (Nichola Burley), he's desperate to start punching above his weight to win her over, which leads him to the legendary Wigan Casino and the burgeoning subculture within. Along the way, he and clumsy mate Russ (Alfie Allen) meet Mandy (Cemetery Junction's Felicity Jones), the bright younger sister of a dim schoolfriend.

If you think you can see where this is going, you're right. While there's lots to like about SoulBoy - Compston holds the screen as a perfectly likeable, fallible everykid (plus he's either a great dancer, or the editing has been brilliantly managed to make him look like one), and he's backed up by a great supporting cast of familiar faces. Marcus does a fine job of evoking the era on what must have been a very tight budget, and of course the soundtrack is magnificent. But there's a problem: Jeff Williams' screenplay. Well, Williams is credited with it, but it feels like a story that's had any originality thrashed out of it by non-writers. Never once does SoulBoy's screenplay deviate from a well-worn trail of clichs, and that's a great pity, as it restricts Marcus' film to generic goodness, rather than break-out greatness; the key's in the title, folks: SOUL. Can't wait for the soundtrack, though.

O.K. who's going to set up a Poll?

Marks from 0 to 10.

And only for people who have actually seen the film (the trailer doesn't count!) :D:lol:

Would bet good money on it averaging out at 7 or 8 out of 10.

Maybe it might have been a good idea to read the previous threads on this subject so at least you would've known what kind of reaction you were gonna get...........just a thought!!

On a lighter note........

Dancing couple can step right into film party

TALK of the Town is on the hunt for this fun-loving city couple who won a Northern Soul dance contest at the famous Wigan Casino more than 30 years ago.

This lost picture of Wayne McFadden and Alison Mitchell at the 1970s contest surfaced during the filming of the new Northern Soul movie Soulboy, which premieres at the Film Festival on Saturday.

The producers have invited the pair to show up at the premiere and after-party at the Traverse Theatre - and even show the stars how it's done on the dance-floor.

https://edinburghnews...Tram.6370606.jp

Wayne and Alison originally from Dundee are now married and living in Australia so no chance of them being at the premiere and after party at the Traverse Theatre.

The review of the film

from a critique mirrors what I thought after seeing the test screening. Great soul bits and some decent acting but the plot is a little on the weak side and restricts the film from having a bit more grit.

Posted

Eh that is exactly what I am doing and have always done, in fact you steal my words from my first post, I am judging it based on the fact so far there are 2 glaring stupid errors just on the trailer which doesn't bode well for the film, it is the film chap himself who has now come on saying the film is now based on Winstanley's book which kinda changes the context of the film and if correct makes it a far more ambitious project and in reality one hardly likely to be achievable on screen.

Hey Jocko, if you have seen as many British films as I have you'll know they are riddled with inaccuracies. That does not detract from them as films though. I do get annoyed about the recreation of history by Hollywood though (especially where Mel Gibson is concerned  ) . Only this morning I watched an old 60s B&W mystery thing set against a back cloth of the IRA in Dublin, and the Dublin road scenes were all filmed in High Barnet (the film was made at Elstree), you can even see Green Line buses in the background - but of course most people wouldn't notice that. So get over the clapping scene, as I said it was never going to be a documentary was it? And getting a film out with a distributor in Britain these days is a real challenge for anyone. You and I are at one about Winstanley, so no argument there.

I still can't help feeling they only added Northern into the film as they knew they had a captive audience rather than any concern for the subject matter, just a pity they didn't actually take any time to understand their audience which has always been my concern about this,

Well if they wanted a captive audience surely they'd have set it against Slade, T Rex, Quo and the like, oh and football hooliganism, rather than Northern.

If you are happy with your 15 minutes of fame, so you can say you were there, at any cost to scenes already dwindling reputation then that is your choice,

I'm not actually going, but like every other film I watch, when I do see it I am still going to judge it as a film for it's entertainment value. And let's not judge the average Wigan goer of the 70s with todays scene either, very different, even large chunks of the music. Always a proportion of "strange coves" hanging round in the Casino  And not just in the record bar  Wigan was mainly a "yoof" thing, started by Winstanley the rock fan yes, because he saw a "gap in the market" and was "amazed "when "over 600 turned up on the first night". Not that many of the 100,000 Casino members left on the scene today! 2,000 tops. So don't think it has any bearing to todays scene, it's about something that went on nearly 40 years ago..

And hi to Dave Norwell!

My name's in book aswell, [ nargh nargh ] and i'm the 16year old from STOKE in 1974, just my view,we did'nt go for girls ,we went for the music and i never knew a bus from Stoke travelling to WIGAN. Suppose that's why i'd probably like to see the story from my aspect. I shall watch the film and try and let my mind wander and try & relate to those great nights at the CASINO, but i'm sure i'll cringe a few times when i try and compare fact + fiction. Just got back from the SoulBoy premiere in Edinburgh.....really enjoyed it. It was not a bio on Wigan and nor was it meant to be. I got goosebumps a few times from memories of the smells, noise and heat as you went up the stairs through those double doors into the main room and comedown on Sundays in your bedroom. Hit the period perfectly, soundtrack was good, yeah we can all pick our own favourite sounds no-ones going to agree with everything. Nothing will ever capture what Wigan meant to all of us who went many times over the years but this film at least left me with those fond memories stirred. The "dance-off" was a little contrived and would never have happened but was part of the film not real life. I recommend it as an entertaining film, my wife who wasn't a soulie enjoyed it, just remember it's not a documentary.

Told the wife were out in the car tomorrow afternoon for a bit of Alan and Jane for Father's Day (remember this post when you see the film!)

You know I think it would be a good move/ idea to start a FRESH thread for Reviews only of Soulboy Film by people that have seen it , now that all that the leaches have had a full stomach of the blood letting this pre -event disgusion has had.

For the future

I would love to see a film made based on today with flashbacks of the past myself . There are some very interesting grown ups out there with a great storty to tell in retrospect.

I think a love of the past suddenly meeting with that person again in Y2k after many years trying to juggle finances and family commitments with todays bounty of souling and the heartache of soul widows/ husbands could be a really good serious film project

Shall we write a screen play you could use BLOGS , blogs are easy to manage and edit/add to ... Here's your chance to put the record straight ... todays screen play would look like this ? and ideas anybody ?

I recall on KTF many years ago we ran a story called Northern Nights ? or Northern Lights ? God it was so funny we all added characters and our own paragraphs to the story I think Dave Olley masterminded it ... it was brilliant.

Of course people can comment on a movie they haven't seen, they are not commenting on the movies content, they are commenting on the perceived impact on some thing they hold quite precious and to think people shouldn't or don't is quite na¯ve.

Are you championing a film or are you campaigning against peoples urge to comment because this forum is the sheer essence of comment is it not?

I find it both normal and quite healthy that we, as soul fans, feel strong enough to comment even if a lack of eloquence some times makes us just look a little silly but this is not to ever overshadow a real wish to protect passionately the Northernsoul Scene that we have invested so many years of our lives with.

I have often read on this thread "It's only a film", that is the biggest cop out ever and the philosophy of those who either don't care or don't fully understand.

The film makers have every right to make the film and we all know that a movie or a book will be written with "Poetic license"

Soul Source is the leading internet forum for our genre and the film makers have dipped their toes into our water, we have every right to comment and even more right to voice our concerns be they perceived or real!

Voicing an opinion based on care does not make any one stupid.

To the film makers on here, you should tread lightly on our shoulders.

SoulBoy is an original fiction story. The writer read Soul Survivors and it was his first introduction to the world of Northern Soul. He then watched the This England doc and read as much on the subject as he could as well as talking to many people who went there. He then wrote an original screenplay with fictional characters which is a love story with Wigan Casino as the backdrop. When you see the film it will be clear.

Fact Shimmy Marcus was informed about a sacking of one of the Wigan Casino staff from the early Casino days and what for. How do i know ! becaause i was there when he was told . He was slightly uncomfatable when informed about this fact which was revealed to him at the filming at A Kings Hall ALLNIGHTER FOR PARTS TO BE USED IN THE FILM, there were or was to be more than one ALL-NIGHTER FROM THE KINGS HALL to be used in the film. Was this something to do with the Kings Hall organisers & advisors. Give us a honesst answer please.

To sum it up I'd probably say, shite.

Yes. And, unfortunately, I was one of the dancers until we fecked off due to the film looking very ropey indeed.

We thought we were getting involved in something special but it didn't turn out that way. There seemed to be a real lack of knowledge on the scene in general and we could see it from a mile off.

Shame really as I believe there sould be a very good film made on the subject.

It would have to be more than quite different Steve. Nothing short of totally fucking different would make me up my rating of the film from dog shit to wank.

So............you were one of the employed original dancers eh......why the flip didn't you make subjective remarks then or pass on valuable knowledge, when you probably had everyones ears on set and could actually show the moves etc., so you walked out? When you've walked don't put the blame elsewhere when you had the chance to influence the outcome. As an ex- Wiganer I would have loved to be given the chance for any input to this film, yes there are inaccuracies but remember, it isn't a flippin' documentary it's a piece of fiction. Can you imagine what the internet would have been like following WW2 if people took every film made as gospel? Grow up!
