Guest wigantojapan Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 i'm in bits, mate! i,m sure soul boy will do for the rare soul scene what quadrophenia did for the mod scene and that is to expose and get more people into it. the atmosphere at quadrophenia was electric the first time it was shown also at the filhouse in edinburgh i,m sure there will be lots of people clapping and singing and hopefully dancing in the aisles lets hope a few new people go along to the dance afterwards and start their journey into the fantastic world of rare/northern soul

Guest Gogse Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Just a warning to anybody that is phoning the box office for tickets. There is another film on at the festival called Soul Boy; this has nothing to do with the soul scene. So... The film about the northern soul scene is called SOULBOY. The film about a boy growing up in Africa is called SOUL BOY.

Guest Roddy Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Can anyone tell us from the film promotion group or Soulboyspromo why there are two after show parties or has the usual happend with Mr R.W I am intrigued both as a Northern fan and as a regular film goer. I was looking forward to talking to the people that made the film and to the actors but that seams very unlikely now as most of the EDINBURGH CROWD WILL BE AT THE MERLIN AND NOT THE TRAVERSE CAN ANYONE TELL US WHATS GOING ON ?

Liljimmycrank Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 What a shame they dragged Russ in to DJ. He had sweet FA to do with the film and whatever his reasons for agreeing to DJ, for me it sets the tone off wrong for the launch of the film. Guys like Dave Evison were advisors to the film on occasion, plus plenty of other people who they could've got and still recreated the oldies feel and had a great launch party. BIG own goal i reckon, and potential for the credibility of the film to be tinged somewhat.
Guest SoulBoythefilm Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 ok. i am from the film and we felt it was right and fitting that the person who started it all RW should be the first DJ for the films release. we love dave evison too. we're all going to have a great night on saturday, the films starting to pick up some great buzz. the actors are looking forward to it. the directors flying from ireland on friday and everyone from the film is going to the Traverse party to just relax and enjoy. everyone who is going to the other party is also welcome at the Traverse party and can get in with their other ticket (providing there is space). it was and still is the whole point of us having the party in the first place!

Guest POTTERIESPECK Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) Nearly all those from Stoke-on-trent who ventured to Wigan and were into the rare Soul scene and indulged in the narcotics side of it were tailed by the author john pye [ Porky ]and his partner Des Lewis [ Stoke DS in the mid 70's ]. They were pretty regular at the Casino, and all those from Stoke who got busted , it was nearly always by these two DS officers. They were'nt bothered about the pot heads as they prefered to bust the Speed freaks of the Rare Soul Scene who were mainly into class A + B dugs and UK produced. These two Stoke DS could probably tell you more about a Soulboy from Stoke in the 70's, and probably know a fair bit about the music, cause like i said they ventured to Wigan REGULARY and also frequented TIFFS [ Newcastle ] ALL-DAYERS on a regular basis, which in them days was once every two weeks. I must say in that period quiet a few from STOKE fell by the wayside and these two STOKE DS officers were left to pick up the pieces of what must have been some very unpleasant expierences for them. Very happy and some very sad time. I can still see then now in their blue Escort van Edited June 17, 2010 by POTTERIESPECK
jocko Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 have you seen the trailer? yes and you completely cocked up any credibility with the clapping scene, such a simple thing for you to get wrong, I said the film deserved a chance initially but that and your arrogant publicity has blown your chances for me, you really don't deserve any sort of audience at all. For those asking about the two nights some intersting stuff on Soulboyspromo forum about it. It reads to me like Winstanley has shafted some of the local guys, surprise surprise. And even more credibility killer for thus film.

Anais nin Carms Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) Well I have just watched the trailer and I think it looks like a great piece of entertainment. I guess I am fortunate enough in that I don't carry any baggage from that time having never gone to Wigan, nor do i care how factualy acturate this film is or who was involved in an advisory capacity it just looks a like great way to spent an hour of my time. And I would guess most people that arn't dedicated soul fans will see it that way. I think it will definately spark off interest. I love the way it has been shot , I have watched on a dongal connection tonight so the images slow down , which has sort of helped in me taking it all in ( love the bit where the guy spins and you see talc dust ) the dancers I think are great ! and they are so young it's briliant to watch the energy in this film. I really look forward to seeing it and sharing a tub of ice cream whilst watching browny fill up. So when do we see it in Manchester ? Edited June 16, 2010 by Carms

Hi Carms, I did go to Wigan, but like you am looking forward to this film with an open mind. Life in the 70s was a bit messy anyway, so "accuracy" is always open to interpretation. As a film fan I'll judge it as a film, rather than a historical documentary I hope the various soul nights go well, a shame the promotors have booked Russ, but too late to turn back now, What's done is done. I could say they should have smelt the bad aroma that follows this particular DJ about before the poor fella got as far as Junction 26 on the M6, but they didn't. Hey ho. Have fun everyone! Enjoy the film.
zmpromo Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 the reason theirs an alternative after show party at the merlin is because mr winstanley asked soul boys promo to orginise the after show party for them and after finding venue, advertising, selling tickets, orginision pa system and dj,then wanted 100 free tickets & half the door money and didnt want to put any money towards party,as this wasnt feesable they then decided they would put the party on themselfs and put preasure on traverse thearte to deal with them and not soul boys promo...after all the hard work we had put in to this mr winstanley had stabbed us in the back so we are having our own after show party were everybody is wecome....film cast & film makers....so come along and join us for a great nite of northern soul oldies...8.00 till 1.00...at the merlin....hoping this answers your question roddy
Little-stevie Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 " they then decided they would put the party on themselfs and put preasure on traverse thearte to deal with them and not soul boys promo" Are you saying you were the soul boys promoters and were double crossed by Winstanley alone or Winstanley and others??? is they including the film makers???? Mr Wigan as lost a few more from his xmas card list Maybe best to just promote the film on this thread Put the two after show parties in events.... Then folk can decide where they wanna go... Its says keep the faith party, maybe a title change is needed after all this.... All this aint gonna help promote the film and makes the whole thing look a piss poor..... Time for my bed.... peace and love

Guest Gogse Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Imagine holding the world premier of the film in the capital of Scotland, asking one of the top promoters in the capital to organise the after film party, then stab the promoters in the back. Beggar's belief!!! Where do you think the Scottish soulies will go after the film? I have two tickets for the film. After the film my wife and I will be going to the Merlin for what I know will be a cracking night, started with the obvious atmosphere that the film will bring. Looking forward to it. gogse
Liljimmycrank Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 (edited) Seems then the best thing to do would attend the merlin aftershow party! Keep it with the soulies rather than the money maker. Having met some of the cast and crew, I know they genuinely like soul music and some continue to attend nights. So for those I'm in contact with, I'll be encouraging them to attend the merlin Edited June 17, 2010 by LilJimmyCrank
jocko Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Hi Carms, I did go to Wigan, but like you am looking forward to this film with an open mind. Life in the 70s was a bit messy anyway, so "accuracy" is always open to interpretation. As a film fan I'll judge it as a film, rather than a historical documentary Eh that is exactly what I am doing and have always done, in fact you steal my words from my first post, I am judging it based on the fact so far there are 2 glaring stupid errors just on the trailer which doesn't bode well for the film, it is the film chap himself who has now come on saying the film is now based on Winstanley's book which kinda changes the context of the film and if correct makes it a far more ambitious project and in reality one hardly likely to be achievable on screen. However I am more than a little suspicious, I think the film is sold out for both showings, I am on holiday in Italia so haven't tried to book, so there is no real need for them to publicise it here, other than they are now faced with an empty after show party and you judge if its co-incidence that they only appeared here after the local lads pulled the plug, completely correctly by the looks of it, on their do. Its been fairly typical of the behaviour up to now and its a damn shame when they have something as prestigious as a Saturday night gig at one of the worlds leading film festivals they continue to act like rank amateurs and has been the case all along treat people on here like puppets and with no respect. They have just lied all the all through their dealings on here which is just really quite pathetic for a world wide organisation and just proves like their hero Mr Winstanley they only care about the bottom line, not the product. I still can't help feeling they only added Northern into the film as they knew they had a captive audience rather than any concern for the subject matter, just a pity they didn't actually take any time to understand their audience which has always been my concern about this, the lack of respect and understanding they have and the fact its a crowd ploy rather than subject matter they love along with their behaviour has me thinking this just wont work, and I use it again, its about getting the right emotions attached to the film which Paul Sadot did so successfully with his play, its not an easy thing, I think the scene and people on it deserve the respect of setting context and concept correctly, then the storyline is an independant beast and can take care of itself and that is the least we deserve, If you are happy with your 15 minutes of fame, so you can say you were there, at any cost to scenes already dwindling reputation then that is your choice, but for me that is as usual another nail in coffin of any credibility of people around.
Little-stevie Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Its hard to believe this bunch can get it wrong everytime they post on the forum... Do they not learn from past experience... History could show that if the film does not really hit the spot with as many people on the soul scene, the spectacular own goals from Ipsfacto when posting on this worldwide forum really turned people against it from the start.... They would always come up against some opposition on here from some people but why cock it up so much that they alienate some who may have really been looking forward to the first ever film on a subject thats been a great part of life.. To treat the soul people of Edinburgh/ Scotland with such an underhand trick a few days before a world premiere is a sure fire way of getting off on the wrong foot..... They take advice from Mr Winstanley in how to promote the premiere ... Could not anyone tell them that it could backfire as Russ aint seen as the caring and sharing type by many...
Guest SoulBoythefilm Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 i am the producer of the film and the first time i posted on this site was yesterday. i am also a girl rather than a guy. the writer read russ winstanley's book and then wrote a film where the backdrop was the wigan casino. the film is a drama, the story about a young man finding a scene in which he belongs. it is not a documentary and it doesn't purport to get everything 100% right but we made every effort with limited resources. i only ask that you give the film a go if you like then great and if you dont then i am sorry. i already gave the reason why we asked russ and i stand by it. whoever we asked would have upset someone.

Maybe it would have been best just to turn Winstanleys requests for 100 free Tickets and half the door take ( as said in the post yesterday ) than turn the Scottish crowd against the premiere aftershow party.... You could have had Russ play also if he could moderate his requests.... Thats called a win win..... That would have been the best course of action maybe and all the cast/ Crew/ punters share a great after show part together.. Thats just me thinking with my promoters head on.... Anyway... Back to the film.... Not long to go and look forward to feedback

What a f*cking ridiculous statement, I like films set in the 70's, it reminds me of some very happy times, I'm looking forward to seeing this, Christ what could be better than a film with a Northern Soul soundtrack?
