ALL records are oldies ........ but all are not guaranteed to tempt people onto the floor .

Well that supports my definition then,mate...Cos it's old doesn't necessasily(1 word l can't spell!!) it's an Oldie...

An " oldie " is a very hard term to label onto a particular record .

I recently heard Bessie Banks' " Don't You Worry Baby ( The Best Is Yet To Come ) " in the " Modern " room of a venue , yet to me it is an oldie , as I first heard it at The Mecca , some 32 + years ago .

Oldie: Old Person

Oldie: Played at Wigan/Mecca/Wheel/ etc etc

Oldie: Just an old record. Oldies stations would play 30s-80s. No?

Anything can be an oldie to somebody just as much an oldie can be a 'newie' to some ears. It all depends on your experience and/or longevity to soul music. Does it not? Simply really.

If you want to then go on and list hundreds of oldies and decide what is and isnt. Fine. But its kinda boring IMHO. It's quite a simple answer.

I beg to differ Phil.

I have witnessed at a couple of venues recently,a few classic oldies

That were massive either at Stafford/Wigan/Mecca/Torch and all the venues earlier

that have actually cleared the floor.

I think the reason being that they are played so rarely a lot of people either don't know them

or with our limited memory some of us oldie people have forgotten them.

I remember you doing another thread about 3 records that you have not heard at a venue for years.

And loads of different people from all over the country said i heard that last week here and that the other month there.

why are these not played more often EVERYWHERE then,Instead of the same old same old.

Just a thought.

One of the best replies I've ever heard to a recent post on this site, when asked whether posters had heared the Onion Song played out recently, one respondent mentioned that they'd played it at Nuneaton Co-op only last week. Quick as a flash somebody came back with, 'They play Mantovanni at our local Co-op, Priceless.......

Well if it was released last year then it's not really an oldie is it?

Like I said...except proper modern...you're not with it are you Phil:lol:

Oldie is a very misused term...methinks:thumbsup:

"oldies" were established records we associated with a time before our "own" (oldies). So yes you are right and you are wrong?! I don't want to annoy the "modern" soul fans any more than usual, but, the village people have their own website, go, go, run to them...

it was tunes like flowers ...for real and show me the way seville sharron, classed as modern. a newie to me has just been released i,e eli paper boy reed,

Just chiming in here, but it's funny that people refer to Wigan etc when referring to "oldies". But they then they'll refer to a Stafford era tune as a "newie". How long ago was that now???

look let's leave it at oldies = Northern soul tunes in the 60's and 70's and tunes found after which hadn't been released then but was recorded in that time period

Modern = mid 70's onwards for Modern soul and don't even get me started on Modern oldies

To me, the word "oldie" has the connotation that the records are outdated. My records are old but not outdated.

Have to agree totally with you on this one, I bet I could spin a whole spot of Wigan olides and none of the oldies crowd would go anywhere near the dance floor but moan that no oldies were played.
