Across The Board Soul Nights

Think most peeps who have been on the scene without a break have witnessed shifts in the ideology of fractions in the music genres cloaked under the name of "Soul Music" and most have shape shifted about in these genres over the years which are sometimes reflective of age, mood and life style. These peeps tolerate "Across the Board" venues well because at some point in their life they may well of been into the other genre's.

Peeps that dropped off the scene for whatever reason 25 - 30 years ago perhaps to get married, start a family or because Wigan closed could be a million reasons have not had the longevity of witnessing the shifts in music genre and have picked up where they left off.

Nothing wrong with this I might add each to their own and the scene belongs to no one person, but it's logical that they would not be as tolerant to an "ATB" event because they have not had the time or been part of a movement within the scene when shifts took place.

I know this is not a definitive explanation as lots of peeps who were off the scene for years are highly energetic in their quest for sounds they have not heard before whether they be modern/70's/x over/mid tempo/60's rare or R&B which perhaps have been out the blocks 2/3 times already, to some.

Also you do get some regulars who are set in their ways and despite never having a break from the scene prefer one genre, but on the face of it those who have "Been there, done it and worn the T Shirt" are more tolerant "imo" to "ATB" than those who have yet to wear the "T- Shirt"

Dead easy this..........

Old fookers = nostalgia for the big tunes that were played in the 70s !

Mods = RnB + 60s Soul - they like funny shoes and Lambrettas !

People who buy T shirts from Asda = they like modern soul and early 70s crossover !

 Thats it really !

oh sorry !!!!!! ok then .............

As I get older I seem to have developed a bigger head / space / acceptance for allsorts of good soul music.

Personally I can absorb lots of soulful things from across the decades.

I am not a "Soul Scene" person anymore and have not been for years, I'm just a Music / Record collector.

I still collect rare 60s independent Soul 45s - I spend all my money on records, and that is my hobby.

But as far as commenting on allnighters and soul nights - you are asking the wrong person at the moment.

I had a hand in promoting a local night with a mate up here in Wales, with the best of the local DJs / collectors coming along

playing original vinyl - and I do mean decent rarities / big oldies and good underplayed records.

We got John Elias, Steve Thomas, Cally, Pete Griff and all the other local collectors DJing.

Absolutleley no intrest locally ! :hatsoff2: We should have done a commercial motown night !

I wont be bothering my arse to do anything again here in this town in a hurry.

I am still collecting records as much as ever !

Thats all I can tell you

Defo works well enough for us here in Fremantle. Mind you the Flybynight Club has the right ingredients to cater for it... 120 years old, all dancefloor, massive sound system, great lighting including flouros and the all important big screen behind the deejay's playing dvd footage from all eras. Can't get any better recipe than that for one awesome soul night. Oh forgot to mention the smiling faces !! Tony, OZ. K.T.F.

Hiya Mate, your are entitled to have your opinion and sound it out on this forum, it's absolutely a fair question to ask, however we have been asking the same one for at least 30 years, some venues only have the one room available and pormoters such as Andy Dyson, Chalkie, and Mick H run their Lifeline all-nighters perfectly well at the Brookfields Riding Stables W-ton, just off J 11 of the M6. The music played is ATB, rarities, and underplayed great soul records, Broadlane Working men's club Between Bloxwich and Essington was a one room venue also playing ATB, this Venue being Promoted by Gary Lee's and Blue Max Millward(god bless you Max R.I.P), it was run for a good few years and had a regular healthy following. Another one is Little Scotty's venue which has been running for 13yrs, always a popular venue well supported, so there it is 3 mentioned up to yet.

So these have been tried and tested, however moods do change especially if certain D.J's are beening booked time and time again, eventually conplacency sets in and they become much of a muchness, playing the same set month in month out, so when the promoters don't step in a give em a swift kick up the arse, and tell them to shape up or ship out these d.j.'s just carry on doing the same old thing and eventually the regular punters stop going and start looking for somewhere new.

I've seen this happen to venues up and down the country,it is so sad, yet only too true. We as the paying audience should demand top quality service all the time and not give into the put up and shut up attitudes....which is a major problem with the scene to-day, that is based on factual evidence not merely guess work.

If we keep knocking maybe the door will be opened one day and promoters will start putting some order back into the scene before it's too late .

I support venues in all areas of Britain and l'm quite partial to whats played in the modern rooms, being female l have always dressed smartly to attend a venue, usually smart trew's and a nice strappy top, l do'nt think l've ever dared go to one in a T-Shirt, and certainly not one from ASDA, however l might give it a go, might even have one personalised with a logo on the front, even something on the back .......How does "Is'nt it supposed to be about Quality not Quantity"!!!! printed on the front, and , "but thats just my most humble opinion"....Whaoo "Dont Take It personl" on the back.

Hey l think l might just go and get that printed :hatsoff2::thumbup:.

Hi Sandi, wave.gif

I love the diversity of the scene and its intense opinions it's the life blood that has driven it forward and kept it going, yes.gif

If we were all into the same then it would be history by now. Passion through diversity has been the instrument of shifts and rifts, sometimes good sometimes bad. excl.gif

But it still fails to make everyone tolerant of "ATB" soul nights, but agree regular rotation of DJ's whether it is "ATB" or "Single Genre" events do keep things fresh. g.gif

The scene does need an influx of new blood but where it would come from I don't know as popular music which sparked the mod revival of the 80's does not seam to have the peaks and troughs which create extremes either. unsure.gif

Other countries around the world seam to be picking up the baton to take what we would call the scene forward and good luck to them. thumbup.gif

As for the UK off to buy some land, build some units on it and open up a "Soul Retirement Village" © so down the line we can shuffle on our Zimmer's. Oh shit some promoter's have "Bootlegged" me idea and beaten me to it and covered it up as a "Weekender". Ha Ha!! laugh.giflaugh.gif

What do you think? forgiv me but I am a wee bit cynical in my old age lol but to be honest I have little or no interest in anything connected with the scene anymore apart from the records so perhaps it's best that I say nothing in fear that what I really think may upset one or two people out there, so keep the faith.

Hi Mark,

Should not need to ask really never thought of the Nighter's you used to run in Manchester & Bury, which I used to frequent, as single genre.

Still got my Shrine LP I received from you at Bury for being your, not sure whether it was 1,000 or 1,000000 guest.

I know sometimes its easy to get cynical about the scene we all been there and yes some people do piss you off, it seams like the more you do for some folk the more you get shot down. whistling

Just wanted to try and get a healthy debate on where "ATB" nights stood in peeps opinion, perhaps would have been better off with a poll?

Cheers

Personally Tom, I don't want ATB anymore. It was o.k. at Willington where the quality of all gendres played there was top notch, but to stand around at a venue for one or two snippets of your personal tastes to be played really used to piss me off, so now I prefer to attend single gendre events. If I want oldies I'll go to a oldie night same with cross-over, 70's, modern, Jazz, nu-soul etc etc, takes all the arguing out of a good night and leaves just musical enjoyment.

John

ahhhhhhh and relax :hatsoff2:

Perhaps it was not the "ATB" you tolerated at Willington John, more so the peeps, friendly, generous, kind, unselfish & up for a good night out, anyway enough about me!!!!!!!:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: Back to the thread.

Methinks you summed it up in the last paragraph Tom,

Also you do get some regulars who are set in their ways and despite never having a break from the scene prefer one genre, but on the face of it those who have "Been there, done it and worn the T Shirt" are more tolerant "imo" to "ATB" than those who have yet to wear the "T- Shirt"

There are those who have been away from the scene that are searching for the nostalgic tunes that will take them back to their youth, also there are many who remained on the scene who consider the oldies as 'done to death'. It is true that we must have new music from the genres you mention in order to attract younger people to take up the scene.

KSTF.
