Some that may know Harpo (Paul) and go back many years on the scene might have a grudge against him, however l'm more than inclined to think NOT. so that only leaves saddo's suffering from the green eye monster syndrome. I've known Paul for almost 41yrs, and in all that time l've only ever known him to be polite, courteous, respectful, and somewhat moralistic especially when it comes to guy's being rude or course in front of women at any venue we have attended. So for anyone who has read Pauls post on here over the years will know that 1stly, this unsavory post is totally out of character, and 2ndly should credit Paul with at least getting the grammer right. I know Paul better than most, and l know he hates abbreviating words, even when sending text messages, so "l day" certainly would'nt of been written by him....... For the person who did write this post can l just say "get it right..." The phrase is "l did'nt/did not" etc etc etc etc !!!! l'm sure there's a law against P.C.Hacking, unlike you, l will be doing my home work...... watch this space. l don't take too kindly to people who think they can do this type of thing and get away with it. A very good friend of ours on the scene just happens to be a barrister, make no mistake, l'm off now to e-mail her, wish me luck and l'll wish you the same.. sandi Edited July 11, 2010 by sandi
Guest Dan Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Thanks for posting those Echoes ads and the odd flier up Chalky - brings back some memories. (I think Tim Fletcher is having a few memory problems in claiming he ran them, though!) I ran the first Cov all nighter at the swimming baths with some help from Simon Bonsor; we had a great room, very big with a bowling alley alongside and a big record area outside. Unfortunately, we never got more than 300 in (for some reason I kept accounts, and the most we had in was 299 in December 1988; usually it was between 230 and 260). This was despite - or perhaps because of - having a pretty progressive DJ line-up (we had Dave Evison on for the oldies). Highlight for me was having Butch, Guy, Ian Clark and Ady Croasdell on on the same night (I think Val Palmer DJd that night, too - I always rated Val very highly from the 100 Club sets). After two or three, I got Rudzi in to help me run it and promote it from his shop in Leicester - I always thought he was an underrated DJ. Cliff Steele, Carl Fortnum, Mark Bicknell, Pep and Harpo... we had some good names on (and some crap ones, namely me). After a while, numbers dwindled a bit (the last event we ran in the big room had 172 paying punters in) so we moved to a smaller side room overlooking the bus station. This was a perfect size, good dancefloor, but the curtains were crap so summer nighters lost a bit of atmosphere at around 4am. My final involvement was the last three Cov nighters at the Alderman Callow school, thanks to Rob Messan. (A hexagonal room, and this is where the car fire was. Very entertaining.) The ACS was a nightmare place to find, even though I printed fliers with a decent map and directions; numbers never got above 250 and work was taking me in directions where nighters were not possible, so I jacked it in in late 1989/early 1990. Rudzi may have carried on after that, I don't know? Simon Bonsor and I did run a couple of all dayers in Cov at a snooker club on the ringroad but these were very poorly attended (Tim F and the late Niall Beveridge ran some far better attended dayers, as well as the excellent Hope and Anchor soul nights). All in all, Cov (certainly in my experience) was a promoter's graveyard; I never once made a profit. But it was great to have a nighter on your doorstep (which was the main reason I started it, to be fair.)
