I was listening to a CD of songs from the summer of love in the garden last night.

On it they had Stoned Love by the Supremes, which had me wondering if there were any other Soul or even Northern Soul songs, that were part of the hippy explosion especially from San Francisco?

I'm not thinking of protest songs, or vietnam songs, but soul songs about free love, flowers in hair, pixies etc.

Any suggestions?

Not a record as such. But when Otis appeared at the Monterey Festival in 1967 it was a real crossover between the soul and hippy genres.

I felt a bit the same when I saw the Voices of East Harlem tearing up the stage at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970.

"The Happening" - The Supremes - a nice usage of a 60's San Franciscan term turned around quite nicely for a typical Motown pop tune.

"Spill The Wine" - The Isley Brothers - great cover of Eric Burdon & War's ultimate Stoner anthem.

I think Stoned Love was well after the Haight-Ashbury 'scare', a good three years, so by rights it shouldn't have been on the CD. The sentiments in the song (in my opinion) speak of a greater love, a love between the races/nations as opposed to war, strife, terror etc. I think it's a message of hope for a better world rather than one of free love, drugs, generational angst etc. The reference to the 'man on whose shoulders the world must depend' is especially poignant. Great song...

Of course a real hippy vibe to some of SW's stuff from about 1970 on.

'Your Autumn Of Tomorrow' by the Crow is 100% pure hippie soul if you check the lyrics...

...so is 'So Is the Sun', of course....

Always thought they were more 'Psychadelic Soul'...

...and what is a hippie without psychedelia, pray tell?

More blues than Soul, I know but...

How about "I Want to Be a Hippy (But My Hair Don't Grow So Long)" by Champion Jack Dupree (Blue Horizon)

or

"The Hippies Are Trying" by Junior Wells (Blue Rock)...

Cheers for the posts. Really enjoying this. Glad I asked now.

it makes sense that black America would have its slant on what was happening in the USA at that time. I just hadnt put the two areas together before.

As has been said it was the summer of 67, but I think its the hippy ethos I was trying to make the connection.

Some storing suggestions so far.

Thanks again.

Anyone mentioned Rotary Connection?

Minnie Ripperton on vocals, and Sidney Barnes in there as well.

California Soul? Definately a hippie vibe to that one.

Nice one Joe.

As soon as I saw the thread, I thought of this baby!

Minnie Ripperton in fine voice!

Sly and The Family Stone did indeed perform at Woodstock .

I have a CD taken from the soundboard containing their full set , which was scheduled to be at 10 PM on the evening of Saturday 16th August 1969 , but actually took place at 3.30 AM on the Sunday morning , the 17th .

The Woodstock show is widely considered as one of their best performances.

The set was " M'Lady " ; " Sing A Simple Song " ; " You Can Make It If You Try " ; " Everyday People / " Dance To The music " ; " ( I Want To Take you ) Higher " / " Music Lover " ; " Love City " ; " Stand ! " .
