I started out having all these incredible soul 45s pass through my hands as part of purchasing an enormous (50,000 45s) collection nearly 3 years ago. I couldn't justify keeping most records, as I thought about what else could be done with the money, but there were certain records that grabbed me so tightly when I played them that they went into my play boxes.
I've been continuing to pile up a nice selection of Northern Soul and crossover 45s, which has made me ponder the possibility of playing out at a soul do. We have a Northern Soul night once a month and a soul/funk night once a month, so there may be chances out there.
I'd love to hear about your first time playing out in front of a crowd. Part of me would be really excited about it, and part of me would be petrified.
Do you remember the first record you played, and how your set was received!
P.S. As part of all of this madness of collecting, I've started setting aside "interesting" soul cover 45s. Is there anyone else that does? A few gems so far:
Anita Carter/I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)
Bill Black's Combo/But It's Alright
Mark Farner Band/Just One Look
T.G. Sheppard/I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)
