the first time i heard this, it was played by Dickyboy at Wigan. He played it just one evening. I went on a regular basis, and watched some of the regulars take it to the stage, talked to him(he knew them) and then played it for them. Something done not that often by Dickyboy. Of course i enjoyed dancing to it, as for who discovered it i believe it could have been pre-wigan.

beautiful label design and a real collectors piece...i would imagine valuation isnt far off the the identicle version on rampart by dave and ruben. only pre-wiganite soulies could answer that question i guess.....what puzzles me is how come the intro is missing off the warner bros single?

When this tune was re-issued in 1969 by Warner Bros, that intro must've sounded horribly out of date and that's perhaps a reason why they edited it out?

The Rampart 45 issue is by the way also a re-issue from 1969 that was released to promote an LP of past local hits from the LINDA/GORDO/FARO/WHITTIER/RAMPART stable of labels. The title of the LP is "Golden Treasures Volume Two: West Coast East Side Revue".

The original Linda 45 release is from 1965.

I think there is a thread in the vaults which tells the tale of how this was sold/given to Dave Evison to play at the Casino...he slipped it in his Oldies sets and broke it even though technically it was a 'newie', so to speak! Or did I dream that?!

Has always been one of my all time faves as well...my first copy came from Soul Symbol...purple one for £20. I was delighted as this was the first chance I had to get it since I asked RussW to sell it to me whilst playing it at the final Casino nighter...unfortunately he had already promised it to someone else (The pain was eased as I then asked him to sell me his Patti & Emblems IGLYALLT which he did...off the deck...£12.)

I hung on to that same copy for many, many years, but let it go eventually, replacing it with a demo...which I also later moved on. In fact I only recently got one back...found it over here in a Rock & Roll collection...for the equivilent of 30 of your English Pounds!

Dave also broke Benny troy as well in those dark early mornings before 8.

I'll agree on this also - I picked mine up from Record Corner after being told about it from a Yate regular I knew - it was a long time after that beore it got major plays elsewhere (as far as I can remember anyway!)

The Majestics though, I don't remember hearing until the early to mid 80's.

No, as mentioned earlier, Searling played it before Dave Evi .However Dave was probably the one that broke it at the casino.

Correct on all accounts, Dave also broke the Steinways as well. I remember Dave telling a story of him playing the Majestics at Wigan and guy coming up and dropping £10 notes on the decks, when it got to 4 Dave handed him the record.

The LINDA release was its first original issue from 1965.

The RAMPART and WARNER BROS release are re-issues from 1969.

Might have been a bit later than that mate. I've got a tape that rob mariot did me after I'd stopped going to Wigan - his comment on the listing which I've still got is "massive at the moment- D.Evison"

The last time I went was Sep 79 so the tape was done maybe early 1980?

Heard the story about it being given to Evison to play so not sure if the record was Rob's or Chris's - they were both living at home at the time so Rob could have taped some of Chris's records as well as his own

btw There's a Faro release by Chick Carlton & The Majestics, and like some other Faro releases it has their photo's on the label. There's five faces, so presumably that means there was 4 members to the majestics? Chick was a songwriter for many LA based acts and his name crops up on a number of labels.

On the tangent - Steinways def predates Wigan, a Catacombs/Wolves area (and probably Torch as well ) spin, '72 maybe. Think maybe I remember reading the name on the adverts in B&S before I had heard the tune. Heard it one nite and learned what it was the following sat morning in one of the dj's shop's (max's/pep's/alan & bob crockers in stafford street or possibly over in b'ham on the oasis market, but perhaps those stalls were a few years later, so maybe that rules them out?) I can still see the label, and it looked cool to my teenage eyes. It was a demo, white label green writing, it was years before i saw an issue, and decades before i saw my first all white demo, is that the rarest format?

Very interesting, it's amazing how many records were actually played at the Cats before the Torch and Wigan, :hatsoff2:hats off to Max, Pep and everyone from way back.

Great to see Max is still going strong now and still as enthusiastic

Not only that but when you hear certain records, you automatically think you know whats going to follow them because thats how it was on your old tape! Like every time I hear Lockes Theme I think of Total Eclipse "6 o clock" starting right away.

Also if you've got a tape of a record and it jumps, when you hear it you get used to that jump and come to expect it; I had a copy of Why Can't We be Lovers by Holland & Dozier in 1972 and it always jumped in the same place and when I got it on cd it just wasn't the same without the jump

That was a common fault on the Holland & Dozier UK 45 which I spent hours agonising over whether it was a jump or a terrible edit. I know what you mean though Pete. Your ears get attuned to this stuff, especially at an impressionable age........

More than people may think I reckon. At that time the Birmingham/Wolverhampton area was a major trek from deeper North - there was no M62 for a start, so Birmingham/Wolverhampton was at the outer reaches for most people. I seem to remember that Leeds-Birmingham could be a 4-5 hour journey back then so the only times I ever got there really were for All-Dayers, which were always a revelation musically. Naturally we bumped into plenty of people from there at other events so we'd get to hear about some of the stuff that was being played - Little Joe Romans being a good example. Plus people like Graham Warr were among the first to go to the States so there were always a lot of great records around that neck of the woods.

Unfortunately Sam usually got to 'em first!

I'm a little confused by some of the DJ's / venues / dates being mentioned. I have the Linda issue and have had for many years. I'm positive I would have bought it pre 1980 and am certain the The Majestics was huge at the Fleet in Peterborough late 1978 going into 1979 however I can't recall who played it. The record then, from memory, seemed to get re-activated when Tony Clayton acquired Nev Wherry's collection in circa 1982. As I said, my memory is fuzzy on this one so please put me right if necessary
