Wigan Banned Record List

Can any one throw any light on the Banned Record List at Wigan Casino?

Did the list exist, who had it, what records made it onto the list and why?

Was this all about the difference in what was being played at Blackpool and Wigan or was there more to it?

Barnaby Bye - Can't Live This Way

Was this on the "List"?

Did records come off and on the list?

barnaby bye. christ, I'd forgotten that one. Gross record. Were they the Alessi Brothers? I can't see it being banned at wigan as it was massive everywhere, particularly at cleethorpes, kettering, peterborough, st.ives etc..

No simon i asked Russ about 4 or 5 year ago at Yorkshire all dayer the answer was no, Billy. ps see you down soho tomorrow afternoon in Sonia massage parla.

Billy, I heard from the horse's mouth, a different horse mind, that the list was there.

Tomorrow, I can't meet you at the Sonia Massage Parlor as I am banned for six months over a ping pong ball firing incident, I wish I hadn't taken my bleedin table tennis bat!

Billy, keep yer phone switched on mate, we are setting off from Yorkshire at 7, see ya darn there mukka

But Simon was asking about Ian.

I assume Levine.

And Ian and Colin didn't ban anything.

Tunes had already passed there "quality control" before being played.

Think he's having you on there...Sure there was an article in Blues And Soul about it as well.. yes.gifthumbsup.gif

By the way Barabye Bye was complete and utter 'Pop Bollocks' yes.gifyes.gif

But kin great to dance to! thumbsup.giflaugh.gif

Don't wanna do the Wigan v Mecca thread again , BUT I have a live tape of an unknown DJ at Wigan slagging off the sounds played at the Mecca for a good 5 mins during his spot ,and how the scene in general should ban the current " disco " sounds , I think mid 77 , can you imagine nowadays standing at a venue and a DJ doing this , to be met by a huge applause !!!!!!!, OH YES ONE BIG SOUL FAMILY INDEED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!no.gif

Bobby Franklin-Ladies Choice

Snoopy Dean-Shake 'n' Bump

Both banned by Russ for being 'Too Funky'.....:yes:

think king sporty was on the list too

my theory was/ is he was too worried, he couldnt have competed in the world of new releases he would have been way out of his depth far easier to let soussan feed him, its kind of funny he banned those records yet stood by soussans side when he played those dire remakes one after another after another....thank god for the mecca

bhoyo, how come chapter five gets on this thread as well?, for sure youll have the folks in barrow up in arms!

Muriel Day should have been banned.

For health and safety reasons.

It's offensive to the ears.

Stu.

was the flasher banned?......now be careful how you answer that you jokers!!

Rob- I had left Wigan by the time I delivered a promo to Ian Levine of The Flasher. I managed Lloyd Michels and sold the master to Des Champ and Roger Easterby(Chicory Tip)

label Route.

I doubt anyone could ban it, due to the sheer demand!

As a side note, I supplied names of various dancers to mingle in the crowd at Top of the Pops as Ruby Flipper the resident Dance troupe had

difficulty with the Northern Soul dance! Happy Days. Lol

Barnaby Bye absolute magic. thumbup.gif

Matt- Hot on the heels of The Flasher. I gave this to Ian Levine as I thought Wigan would totally shy away from

such a unusual groove.

I used to meet a Atlantic promo guy on Downstairs Records, New York in 75. He gave me a 10 inch acetate and white label 7 inch. The latter I gave to Levine and still have the acetate.

Ironically, 3-4 years later, the very same promo guy gave me another acetate to ' take to England' in the hope of getting plays.....the track.....Le Freak- Chic!

MISTURA (FEATURING LLOYD MICHELS) - THE FLASHER-ROUTE -

THE record of spring 76 ! .........Might have been my imagination but it seemed to herald a different style of dancing at nighters too

They all got played, at some point, banned or not. Worse were the ones that got hammered 3,4, 5 times a night, or even in one set!
