Yes a very underrated venue in my and a lot of peoples eyes.

I have looked back till 2005 till they started !!!

But no definitive list of sounds , we've had dj's / dancers / live acts / and fights , myself included on the last one !!!!

Morecambe Pier was one of the best niters after the casino closed, it is very underated. It also had some of the best dancers Willie Mercer and Stewart Spence from Scotland. Mark Linton was brilliant at Morecambe and is still DJ ing.

I totally agree.

The only other Nighter to come anywhere near wigan besides Morecambe

was Parr Hall Warrington.

didnt miss many of these nighters,hitchiked there and back a few times, astral trip always reminds me of morecambe pier for some reason, remember i used to dance on the carpet cos the dancefloor was always full(in the bigroom)

It got a good few plays in the entrance room (starlight lounge or something?) along with The Drifters 'Got To Pay Your Dues" IIRC. A great nighter IMHO

BTW My copy of 'Everybody Come Clap Your Hands' has a stylised daisy image on it?

One of the very best of the 80's and one we lot never missed if we could help it!! Toon wise - it has to be Lenny Welch on Big Apple 'You Picked A Fine Time' and 7th Wonder ' Shes My Girl' - packed the floor every time and along with Moody & The Deltas they were THE anthems. Lets not forget the starlight room either; many happy memories with Wullie et all grooving in there as the sun came up and fried you!!!! One day I''l post all the stories I have about getting to that venue along with some of the more interesting moments too

And as a modern purist - back then, it was the worst recording Lenny made. 

IMHO the later Carleton Inn and the small room named "The Garage" offered a greater deliverence of current indies, seventies musical productions styles and bang upto date major label offerings. As the earlier Pier niters were packaged and labelled "Northern" and were too heavily "leg ironed" on the back of Station Road.

I can assure you that he ain't so skinny these days - thanks for the compliment - I remember in the modern room we were a kind of ragtag bunch of lads who wanted to spin a few sounds and just worked out the schedule on the hoof - for a bunch of first timers finding their way it wasn't so bad and we had fun....my lasting memory is that Shaun could never spell my first name right....4 letters and always wrong.....

Seem to remember a big instrumental C/U from that time titled " THE DANCE " by Willie G & Co ?

You're right it was from a Cleveland Browns record. It's called "Dance Big C" by the Ray Jay Band. Not heard it since those days it was played. What i remember it was an instrumental with football commentary and whistles on it .

Was recorded and played as a theme record throughout the Cleveland Brown's games..................used as the Browns entered the field, during timeouts and countdowns. It so did lack that Gene Page production themed arrangement. It was rumoured The Ray Jay Band would play live throughout "The Brown's" home games playing popular cover tunes. Was'nt Larry Wedgewood - No More Games ...............connected to the Boston Celtic team.

my mate used to dj in the modern room paul murphy his nick name was fly had a good collection.some good tunes around that time still my favourite era in modern soul.

i used to dj at the carlton and remember mark i always liked the surface track feels so good he used to play we djd together as well at a giog in th ebackroom at king georges hall blackburn!!! great bunch of lads with phil paul hawkins i think as well and a few locals including paul murphy

Looking at images online it began in April 1983.  By the 4th Anniversary it was definitely at the Carlton Club

Hello Chalky, i'd guess it moved from The Pier around 86,  it wasn't a straight move to The Carlton, there was another venue in between. The Pier was my favourite nighter and definately the venue that got me hooked on the scene after only doing the local nights in the north east.

Meanwhile in the front [nearer the shore] smaller room the playlist was oldies only. Seems like a very very long time ago on a galaxy far away.

From my own experiences at Carlton Club later on it was oldies.  Others have also said apart from the modern it was oldies that were wanted.  John Vincent had a fabulous set of upfront 60's newies but he was frustrated with the lack of willingness to embrace them.  He said he packed the scene in disallusioned. Not saying no other newies were not featured by others as I know it wasn't the case.

The other venue was the Winter Gardens - there was a fourth (a club type pub - think it was owned by one of Sean's many relations) venue used for warmups round the corner from the Carlton that I believe Sean held a couple of nighters at, trouble was the squad got wise and used to pull people on the 150 yard walk up to the Carlton. Used to be a lot of Bombers, Dex and back streets around at the Carlton when it first opened. Went as often as I could once out of college - met my close friend Pete Hollander for the first time in the queue outside the Carlton in 87 (lots of hair and a silly moustache back then - plus absolute belief that anything that wasn't played at the Torch was crap - that soon changed of course) - believe it was his first nighter back.

Seem to remember James King doing a PA for Memory when it was released here - anyway me and Mark Sargent took a load of 12's up for his lordship.

The little room used to be good at the Carlton - Gary Taylor, Mark Walmsley etc playing all sorts. Despite being 250 miles away there was always a big chunk of the Swindon/Oxford/Cheltenham/Gloucester crew with Scouse running a monthly minibus from Swindon, plus a few cars (even did it on a scooter, as I did most nighters back then, both from Hull and Abingdon) - remember we picked up these two hitchers in the Swindon minibus once - after a while they asked if they could skin up, needless to say they ended up absolutely smashed at the nighter.

Was talking to RS a while back and he was enthusing about how brilliant the nighter was and how it doesn't get the credit it deserves. Always liked Sean too, even though he was a serious wide boy.

The much remembered long drop toilets you could see the sea through were a strange one when you're off your head.

Third anniversary was the best nighter I ever went to (got the train from college in Hull - by the tim it got there it was packed - with people dancing in the isles lots of record etc dealing going on), absolutely incredible - remember lending the DJ my copy of the Pockets, Catch Me, 12" and the place absolutely exploding.

I must have managed to fit the Third Anniversary in between my ship at the time being West Indies Guard Ship earlier that year and going on a Far East deployment later in the year.  Definitely remember going down with Kev Sowerby and a few others from Penrith.

first 3 years were at the central pier till it caught fire original djs were richard searling, pat brady, john vincent ,russ winstanley, brian rae,keith minshell .in the starlight room steve whittle, marc farley, steve brackenbridge, derek smith and keith brady . Then did a few allnighter in the dome a council building,move to the carlton inn had 4th anniversary there which had a side room known as the garage which was a modern room. there was a few allnighters in a small night club called the gardens but wasnt nothing to do with his family. gary taylor, mark warmsley and jason conroy djed at the carlton. so great night had there so great acts such as prince phillip mitchell, chuck jackson, gene chandler,the flirtations,sam ward, francis nero, great nights and especially the pier allnighters dont get the recognition it deserves in my opinion. yes shaun was the sole promoter of soul promotions

Great niter, my overriding memory is coming out at 8am (Feb) how bloody cold it was on seafront, back up the road for clean clothes then down to glenrothes niter,that was tough wkend.
