Hi Mace

Many thanks for your comments and what you say is correct. Good idea re maybe dropping room 2 on the occassional date that it is clearly unavoidable to clash with another similar event.

I certainly do look at what is on elsewhere and am limited in scope for dates as there is so much on everywhere. In planning I have to look at likes of Lifeline, Rugby and other nighters within , say a 100 mile radius. Then there are the soul nights which keep increasing everywhere. So, yes I look at what is on when i plan my dates but , as you say am bound to come up against another event somewhere. Its then a question of not clashing, or trying to with the events in the radius area I mentioned above.

Re last friday. We were not 160 below. It was nearer 90. Looking at the various posts on the events thread I noticed that people from my previous event were going to Bidds(saturday), Groovesville, Lowton and Wilton. And then up popped another gig an hours drive away, where no doubt we lost a few. There were other events which no doubt had an impact on main room.

Like you I am aware of the negative impact that travellers may have if they have heard of a quiet night somewhere. You got over that so i understand last weekend from your previous one. I hope for the same and will try to maintain a positive stance. It is not my responsibility to change my dates when someone later books a soul event subsequently. I do not have that flexibility, in any case for the reasons given above and the venue I use has other types of bookings throughout the year.

Bottom line is I can always run a room event if it not work out and its up to the public to support it or lose it. All likes of you and I can do is put it on and hope that we are supported.

Best Regards

Mike

Mike,

Apologies for getting the figures incorrect, I had heard you had 400 in the previous nighter and 240 in this one, hence the calculation of 160.

Of course there will always be something on the same weekend, this is totally unavoidable.

You are also in an unenviable position of having to avoid local soul nights as well as national allnighters, as your event attracts both crowds........so by running a promotion with a rare room as well as a main 'across the board' room you are having to avoid two seperate calenders as such.

I obviously don't have this issue with Bidds, I have very few locals, with 95% travellers, so it's easier for me to avoid nighters that will damage me most, without having to worry about local soul nights that have little or no impact

Of course things crop up, Groovesville was also on last saturday and took 15 - 20 off my attendance at Bidds.

I totally agree that it isn't your responsibility to move your dates if other promotions 'pop up' after your dates have been fixed.

Des has already asked me for Bidds 2011 dates this week as he know you are planning yours.

I don't usually book my dates for the next year till October, which gives me a good chance to see what else is on the calender.

However, when I booked Bidds for last weekend (May 8th) your event wasn't listed up as far as I can remember, and Des certainly has had my dates since October.

Des phoned me a few months ago to tell me that your nighter was going to be on the same weekend as Bidds and asked how we could prevent any damage to either event (as far as the rare room was concerned)......as part of that discussion he gave me his word he would not use any of my resident DJs (except for himself of course, as he runs the room) so there would be less similarities between your Rare Room and Bidds the following night.

I could of course, have dropped Des from my line-up for the Saturday, but he didn't seem too keen on that idea :D

Anyway, besides booking Johnny Beggs as his 'mystery guest' :hatsoff2: , he otherwise pretty much kept to his word.

My point being, if not already in place, you do need to open communications with as many other allnighter promoters as possible, especially with the size of your promotion.

When there is a clash, even if over a weekend rather than the same night, there will never be any winners.

Regards

Mace

And of course other Promoters can come and ask me for my future dates. They not been exactly rushing to do so. Nice that in a way my promotion is seen as offering something to be taken into account. The responsibility goes both ways and as i have said earlier I not have a great deal of flexibility and will have to do the best that I can under the circumstances. I will do my best to avoid local/regional clashes but I am not the only player in this and others can avoid my dates if they wish. I have not as far as I am aware been complaining openly about Room 2 but merely responding to the relevent posts as I feel they needed to be commented on by me.

Was not aware of your conversation with Des and the mystery guest. I think this matter is perhaps better discussed via PM rather than an open forum.

Spot on Mace.

Last weekend we could have gone to;

Friday - Gloucester (for the 2nd room) or Wilton.

Saturday - Groovesville or Bidds.

We went to Wilton and Groovesville.

The previous Friday and Saturday there was nowhere that suited us.

Yes, but I not only player in this. Anyway you were spoilt for choice and no doubt you selected well.

I am now moving on from this thread as enough has been said. As I have said above ,others know where I am and I will select my dates best way I can taking all things into account and hoping to avoid any clashes but cannot guarantee that will always be the case.

Surely it's just bad manners and rude to put on events when such hard working promotions like bidds, lowton, more recently groovesville are on the whole just scraping through and more so wilton which has limped it's way through the lean times even when the callender wasn't at bursting point ? just cos a mile radius point is applicated this makes it ok ? nah wilton certainly needs it's regulars from even further afield than gloucester or which ever other town.Put it on and hope we're supported is fine ,but if it isn't and the others aren't then we're left with nowt.. this of course applies country wide not in particular th above named event.

Mike,

You seem to be taking my comments as though I am laying any blame on your doorstep.

This is not the intention, but highlighting that for allnighters, especially larger promotions, to succeed, then all the promoters need to talk to each other.

I'm not really bothered who iniates the conversation to be honest, but moreso that it happens across the scene.

Of course your event should be taken into account, it is a large established event on the allnighter calender.

For that reason alone I'd have thought contacting other promoters to discuss what plans they have was essential.

I'd be ringing/P.M.ing every promoter going if I was running a regular allnighter of the size of Glos......it certainly doesn't bother me to mither every fcuker :D

Just my opinion like...free to take, free to leave...... :hatsoff2:

I cannot accept that. I find that comment well over the mark and would be helpful if you got your facts right.Lowton moved their date from the week before and Groovesville was not on when i checked the dates to my knowledge. Wilton is opposite side of the country. The event in Dudley appeared suddenly to me. So it would be ok if I was limping along too would it.Think by sounds of it you think I should not be doing anything. Sorry to disappoint you in all.

and back to the threads original question about a slow rare room before all the talk of clashing or not clashin......

if the rare room doesnt work cos people are havin such a good time dancin to across the board (rare/classic) northern ,why not make it an rnb/latin( and dare i say it ) ska room !....there are lots of people enjoying both locally at go go children and cafe a go go....some of which dont like northern allnight...especially 70s !...and there wasnt a great deal of rnb downstairs as i think has been said earlier in this thread...

a way to cure the to many events problem is for......the named djs around to say no to events where the promoter/dj of that event has nowt to do with the wider soul scene......can,t have it both ways ...if you want nothing to do with the bigger picture ...then don,t ask the bigger picture dj,s to come to you........walk the talk as Dave says......or go away tezza

Had this conversation with a well known DJ recently and he looked at me shocked. 'but if I didn't do those events, where would I get the money to buy the rare records to play at the better events', was his reply.

On the other hand we have another popular DJ that very rarely takes soul night booking. Be going along to see one of his rare soul nite sets tonight;)

Don,t mean that the well known djs shouldn,t play at soul nights, just not at soul nights where the promoter/dj......never goes out as a soul fan on the wider scene.........
