Get out before it's too late!!:laugh:

Too late  I,m not joining in this thread or am i :no:

I,ve got very good friends who hardly play out anymore because most of the 2 room nighters have r n b as the 2nd room instead of modern. Why not have a open decks policy in the 2nd room so most peoples taste in music can be catered for. Promoters over to you.

Calling allnighter promoters

There is nowt I like better than an allnighter that gives me the choice of a "Main Room" and a "Modern Room", do they still exist?

What nighters give both a Modern and Main Room?

I'll play along................................ RADCLIFFE

Which scene are you talking about? The northern scene doesn't need to cater for people who love modern soul, there's a modern soul scene for that. Why should any event play both? To be honest the northern events that try to play modern soul do it badly, as Bearsy rightly said, it's not modern it's usually 70s and 80s northern soul often played in the main room any way. If i was into modern soul i wouldn't want that compromise. I think divorcing modern soul from northern venues is doing modern soul fans a favour.

One of the most sensible posts I've read on here for ages, absolutely right. Putting northern and modern rooms in the same venues over the years has polluted the modern soul scene with some northern soul attitudes that do a truly modern soul scene no favours at all, the worst one being the vinyl/CD thing especially given that the vast majority of the best contemporary modern soul tracks haven't seen a release on vinyl so have been ignored by so many DJs who come from the northern scene who try their hand at DJ'ing on the modern soul scene, which is actually quite a high percentage these days. I'm not trying to stir up this format argument, but when it's actually derogatory to a natural progression of the music which gets played, or in this case doesn't get played, then it does it more harm than good, and my belief is actually that if there were no such thing as CDs and absolutely everything released still came out on vinyl, people from the northern soul scene in general would be far more accepting and less dismissive of new releases because they'd get to hear far more than they do now due to the format issue that is still so inherent with so many people, particularly DJs.

But you are such a minority Theresa. laugh.gif you have to admit modern rooms do 'clear out' early and why wouldn't they, as they don;'t have the same all nighter legacy thing that northern soul has.

I'm obviously just selfish then Stevie G laugh.gif I want to hear everything and I want to hear it in one venue and I want to hear it now! And if I've got a babysitter for the whole night, or occasionally the whole weekend, I damn well want to dance until breakfast time on Tuesday yes.gif

Yep but you are like me, you like both modern and northern. We ARE a minority Hun.

Perhaps we should get a discount on admission, on the basis that we won't complain to the promotor about the music :D

As I said before, if it could be done well, learnt from previous mistakes and successes, doesn't carry northern baggage (e.g. frets about format, northern soul dj's playing in the modern room because they have a few records from the 70s biggrin.gif :-)), and respects the differences between the genres - then maybe someone could make a go of it. thumbsup.gif

Beat me to it Roger as I was gonna say that.

Some very good points in both posts Matt & Roger but the simple fact of the matter is the Northern scene always has & always will cherry pick tunes from the Modern scene. Just take a look at Sam's playlist for an example of that.

As for the punters there are some out there who like both as well & also couples who are into both. Myself & Shelley are a classic example of that. I came from the Northern scene & moved towards the Modern scene as some sort of natural progression. Still love the Northern scene but not so much as back in the day & see it as more of a retro thing.

As for Shelley she has been a Northern fan since the early 80's & loves it to bits but is also enjoying going to Modern nights as all the music is new & fresh for her. Biggest problem though is she's nicked all my old Northern records:laugh:

Same as you Roger I'm not going to go down the 'format, road as I'm more interested in what comes out of the speakers but the Northern scene was built on a 7" collectable format & it's never going to shake that off. Not a bad thing really for them but it's 2010 so why do the same on the Modern scene & what about the Crossover fans (can of worms opened!!!).

PS Matt, might be over to Move On this Friday so maybe we can discuss this in a civilised manner over a beer:beer:

Think you should pay extra myself as you're enjoying MORE of the music than everyone else:laugh:

But then even as late as 1988, had not the "more valued" followers of Modern Soul finally departed and washed away any traces of the N/S all niter 2 room tag. .

In Peterborough there is the fleet and it has 2 rooms. oldies and Modern and i always stay in the oldies room. one of the DJ's who is a regular there Dave Forrest DJ's in the oldies and later is seen in the Modern room DJing. It is not a bad idea which works for them.

Now for a Northern soul night that wishes to play Modern i am happy if i hear some not too many but some. like visitng soul ole here where i can hear oldies but also again Dave Forrest playing some modern. i do like both. so sadly i would feel cheesed off if i went to a night and i asked for Crazy world from some DJ's who wouldn't play it cause it was not oldies. in hope of pleasing just the oldies crowd.

I am now confused - when we are talking about modern are we talking about 70s northern type things or 1990s - Y210K type fair?

Or both?

A million miles between the two and whilst some of us appreciate both, seems to be Modern is not a defined term, so no wonder people don't stay past 2 am

I WAS CONFUSED AT THE OFFSET STEVE. I THINK NOW THOUGH ITS ABOUT SOULFUL HOUSE AND GARAGE TYPE OF 2K/MODERN SOUL RATHER THAN THE OLD AL MASONS, NICKY NEWARKERS, 70`S TYPE WHICH AT THE END OF THE DAY IS NOW NORTHERN SOUL. THE REASON I DONT DO MANY ALLNIGTERS ANY MORE IS BECAUSE I GOT SICK OF THE LACK OF VARIATION. ALL YOU SEEMED TO HEAR WAS 60`S AND ALL AT THE ONE TEMPO. WOULD BE NICE IF THE ALTERNATIVE ROOM WAS A CHILLOUT ROOM WERE ANYTHING GOES AS BOTH THE OLD R N B AND HOUSEY GARAGE ARE A BRIDGE TOO FAR FOR ME

You have exactly the same taste as my good self Dave, although i suspect several of the former and latter genres have items you'd buy and put away for future use

at the end of the day GOOD SOUL RECORDS WILL ALWAYS RISE TO THE TOP EVENTUALLY and hopefully have their day thumbsup.gif

so many DJs who come from the northern scene who try their hand at DJ'ing on the modern soul scene, which is actually quite a high percentage these days. .

Roger

I think you'll find Roger, that quite a few very respectable modern DJs have their roots in the Northern scene, which is hardly suprising (or the very bad thing that you imply) given that the Modern scene has it's roots very firmly planted in the the Northern scene.....ask Colin.

Absolutely wasn't implying it was a very bad thing Cliff, not in the slightest, your perception of what I said is way off mate - my only point was that in my personal experience over the last 15 years DJ'ing on the modern soul scene, for a high percentage of DJs who have their roots in the northern scene, vinyl still appears to be their preference when it comes to playing music at venues, so because of that many of them will miss and consequently not play a lot of the superb contemporary soul music that is only released on CD, that's all I was saying, it wasn't a personal criticism of anyone who has their roots in the northern soul scene, I just see it as a part of the northern soul ethos that actually has a detrimental effect on the modern soul scene music-wise.

You quote Colin's name, but him, and a few others like yourself and DJ's like Bob Hinsley and Baz Maleady for example, are the exceptions to the rule in my experience, because you embrace your northern soul roots but you don't let it shackle you in terms of what you accept and buy and play at venues, which is the way it should be.

And I tell you, if every northern or modern soul DJ today had Colin Curtis's outlook and ethos, the whole scene would be far healthier music wise, there's no doubt in my mind about that whatsoever.

Could you expand on the "northern soul ethos that actually has a detrimental effect", is this a broad brush sweeping statement stereo typing or is there some substance to your comment, please explain?

I've actually explained it twice in my posts Simon if you read back.

But just to make it clear, my view is that if a DJ prefers to play his/her music from vinyl (i.e. northern soul ethos to my mind) then he/she is more than likely going to miss the quality new release music that's only put out on CD, so therefore depriving the scene of hearing quality new releases purely down to the DJ's preference on the format on which it's released.

I'm not for one second saying that to have a vinyl preference is wrong, but if a DJ's preferential format is restricting what gets played on a modern scene in 2010 and great new music isn't being heard because of it, then I see that as detrimental to the scene as a whole.

There is also a huge split on what constitutes Modern these days as well

I'm with R&K on this one. Crossover and Modern at the moment share a very dodgy pact (like our governmentwink.gif ) in the same room. Opinion is edging towards 'proper modern' standing alone and allowing people to enjoy the quality sound of crossover either in conjunction with the main room or on its own. Surely crossover has more to do with Northern than modern. Lashawn Collins does not fit well alongside Marc Evans.

I love crossover, and regularly play them out in my sets, but I believe a modern room should be a modern room playing music that originated after the Casino closed down.

Sorry Soulsorts, its just me being terribly thick and confused, I couldn't see where the CD versus vinyl comes in?

Amen to that.......... thumbsup.gif ... and I also agree with you on format... any modern soul DJ's not using downloads are overlooking some seriously great music... if it's the only available fomat then it's as legitimate as vinyl or CD in my opinion (and play box)..... yes.gif
