Epic
Too many gigs & not enough people to go round. Modern rooms are generally not as busy as Northern rooms at all-niters. Where promoters cut back on outlay - Room hire - DJs - Door Staff etc. you will find it is the modern room that will get "binned". Link to comment Social source share

Guest Matt Male
I could never see the point of having a modern soul room at a northern event. Completely different style of music in my opinion. It would make as much sense to have a Country and Western room. I'm glad we've gone our separate ways. Link to comment Social source share
Daved
I've stopped going to allnighters since they closed the modern rooms down. I used to think it was the best of both worlds when it was done well. Bretby, Stoke and Winsford all did it very well. They offered two distinct rooms and there some punters who enjoyed them both. The music policy was modern i.e. new and recent releases. This left a gap for those who preferred to hear crossover / modern oldies / call it what you will. An attempt to cater for this occurred at the July oldies allnighter at Stoke but didn't work very well in that room. In fact, I recall Colin Curtis rescuing the first one by playing a cracking set of mostly recent stuff. The Stoke allnighter also moved to an anthems fest and started to put off the punters who made it immensely popular in the first place. The tent in Fleetwood began in 2002 (I think) and catered for the modern oldies - very well. In fact, so well that the pendulum appeared to swing back to that genre. The gradual closure of modern rooms as they ran out of steam due to a number of factors, music policy reverting to oldies, competition from weekenders or soul nights, etc. Could it be a go-er again? Possibly, if done well with the right DJ's and clear music policy and some tolerance from the punters. I don't travel so much these days as I don't think the long journey from Kent is worthwhile for a do that ends at 2am. I might do if something new was on offer that catered for my tastes but I'm probably in a minority. Link to comment Social source share

BRI PINCH. Well said Bri. Seen you at many events taking in both rooms where northern and modern/crossover share the same venue. I am struggling these days to find all nighters that do two rooms and i think the demise of such events are now like the dodo-extinct. However the two room nite events seem to be flourishing and i believe that this is down to the fact they finish around 2am. Many of the attendees and also the dj fraternity do struggle with all nighters and the traditional 8am finish. If you want the best of both worlds then try the likes of Bury, Nantwich, Metrodome or if you just want a great mix of music the likes of The wardrobe in Leeds, Beat Boutique in Manchester and many others. Rob Wigley
mmmmm depends where your "Modern" alliance lies--also as Northern DJs now tend to specialise in one area and not dabble in both and visa versa. With the exception of Soul Sam I cant think of a DJ who could play across 5/6 decades of rare soul music-thus leaving the rooms split with no interchange .There is also a huge split on what constitutes Modern these days as well. We personally like all sorts of soul music attending different venues and patronising both rooms at events as well. If things don't change -they stay the same R & K Link to comment Social source share
Harrogatesoul
Know what your saying Dave and whatever has happened to the room at Stoke may happen at other venues but just thought the statement verged on the ridiculous! Like you and many others I'm 'across the board' - so I'm guessing there are venues to support that ethos/belief which you would then back up by attending. the scene is fragmented enough - and that can be a positive thing - to give punters what they want but to say what Golden101 wrote well to me is just plain daft. Just because you like both isn't a reason for them to share an event with northern soul. I like heavy rock but i wouldn't want a heavy rock room at a northern soul event. There's no reason to my mind why they should be at the same venue. I like soul music, just not the type that's played as 'modern soul'. Modern soul is completely different to the stuff played as 60s and 70s northern soul. As for the crap about liking northern but not liking soul music just because some of us don't like modern, well that's just bollocks and a cheap shot to be honest. It's because i like soul music i don't enjoy the elevator music that seems to be passed off as modern soul thesedays. It's about as soulful as a wet weekend. John Benson
Likewise Dave. Unfortunately we appear to be a recognised "minority". I have to agree on this one - sadly we are a minority and also fragmented across the country to an extent that it probably isn't viable for promotors (in general) to cater for us. More so, when at any one time there's only ever going to be a handful or so attending an event Link to comment Social source share

Dave Thorley
Often the problem has been that the promoters really don't get/understand or sometimes like modern (what ever it's form). But run them as a gesture to a few or because they think it's more money in their pockets. Without conviction from the promoter it will never work. It worked so well at Bretby because I (the promoter) believed in it and was aware which DJ's to work with me on it. Modern being play in the main room at Stafford worked, again because I believed in it and I had some dj's that could play both 60's and modern. Rob, Sam isn't the only one that can do that I see many dj's with the knowledge and ability, Ady Pountain, Lars Bulnhiem, Gavin Page, Bob Cosby, Steve Plumb and I do at the right venue. But of cause were not 'In DJ's' Plus any of the Spannish DJ's do this every time they play. Guest mrjp
hi , must agree with a few on here ,been into northern from 1972 , love it , also love the modern stuff , it does seem on soul sauce that anyone that does like modern , is treated like a freak , i can enjoyall soul music , a lot of people on the modern side love northern , does not seem to work the outher way. not been to an allnighter for a long time ,as age starts to take over , a lot of modern does shut at 3.00 now, which i find just right , but thats just me ,each to there own . things seem better abroard , they can mix oldies ,crossover, modern , jazz , motown ,ect , and the places are full with people enjoying the night , anyway thats just my 10 pences worth , i tend now to go to modern does rather than northern , but saying that , every night i go on soul sauce to see whats happening , like i said , just my way ,hope not upset anyone , yours mr j.p. Harrogatesoul
You know one of THE worst things said to me was when attending the Bradford allnighters early 90s (my first allnighters as a 16 year old) was a good friend telling me to forget that bollocks modern room etc. Not 60s blah blah... Ignoring that 'advice' i got to see Lew Kirton and my mind opened to a whole new spectrum of soul. Now..I'm not saying that applies to everyone BUT for longevity I can see it as the way forward at the very least keeping both minds and scenes 'open' . Will oldies/pure northern nights die out? I very much doubt it but I can see a northern/modern scene having longer legs. Blinkered approaches to music could lead to decline. I look at the playlists of our scandanavian soul cousins and see a future. Link to comment Social source share

Guest Matt Male
Well that all depends what your definition of Soul happens to be, because it is of course subjective...You say that you wouldn't want a heavy-rock room at a Northern Soul event but said in a previous post you wouldn't mind mind Country and Western being played in another room..Which types of music do you want??.Cheap shot.....don't think so Soul music is alive and well in 2010.....you like Soul but not the present stuff...kinell if l was lucky enough to hear it in an elevator l'd never get out!!....Time l think to take off your blinkers and enjoy the Soul Soulful as a wet weekend..................................Let it p*ss down!! Did i say i wanted Country and Western played, er no. Go back and read my post. Webby you've resorted to the usual attacks on anyone who doesn't like modern soul, the 'take off your blinkers' old chestnut. I find it insulting that just because i don't like modern (and i'm not talking about 70s northern and crossover) i'm narrow minded and don't like soul music. As i said before, bollocks. Why do we have to like everything? You've spent the last few weeks on here slagging off R&B. Why don't you take your blinkers off mate and enjoy the soul? On a more constructive note, i like the way second rooms are going now, the second room at Gloucester and Radcliffe and now even Stoke for the rarely played out stuff, some funky soul and grittier stuff. Brilliant, and i spend most of my time in second rooms thesedays. I never thought that second rooms should be modern, or even RnB, i prefer to hear an alternative to the main room sound, not an entirely different type of music. Which scene are you talking about? The northern scene doesn't need to cater for people who love modern soul, there's a modern soul scene for that. Why should any event play both? To be honest the northern events that try to play modern soul do it badly, as Bearsy rightly said, it's not modern it's usually 70s and 80s northern soul often played in the main room any way. If i was into modern soul i wouldn't want that compromise. I think divorcing modern soul from northern venues is doing modern soul fans a favour.
